Streamers are all gushing over D4 - what am I missing? It seems extremely shallow compared to POE

The only downside I can see here is what do you do if you are struggling? Logically every time you level you are immediately weaker for a bit until you find upgrades. I could see how that might not feel great. Beyond changing to world tier I, or getting rng lucky, I could see progression getting a bit tricky. No one wants to min / max during the campaign. Well maybe some do, but not most.

"Tricky" isn't the word I would use. "Stale" would be more fitting. Do your character actually feel better and more powerful as you level up? Do you actually FEEL the progression of your character through the progression systems and not just gear? Or are the progression system just a "catch-up mechanic"?

This is what PoE and a few other ARPG do very well: At level 1 you feel weak - at level whatnot you feel strong based on the choices you've made along the way - as the game lets you overlevel if you want, and that you're able to scale speed, AoE and whatnot from the get-go, through the passive tree, gems and other sources depending on the game.

This is probably where the paragon boards come into play. Do we know if we'll be able to play around with them in the next beta?

Anyways I'm not so sure in general that its a bad thing once we get to the endgame. It means every area in the world will be relevant. That seems like a good thing to me, and also avoids the one issue I dislike most when a game gets an expansion.

This is where I would ask: What makes a game an ARPG and what makes a game an MMO? Because based on leveling, progression, world bosses (raids?), open/shared world and so on, Diablo 4 check more MMO boxes than it does ARPG boxes, at least based on how I've learned to define the genres. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing; I'm not saying MMOs are bad. I just don't see why they have to force this on a ARPG franchise.

I guess this is what players want. Which is sad for an old timer like me.

Speaking specifically about the feeling of power question - yes. You absolutely feel more powerful as you level up. It's a different system then we're used to, having areas scale to your level, but gear, legendary powers and skills out scale it. The same area I ran through at level 5 had much tougher mobs at level 25, but I was still more powerful then I was, and the area was still of interest because it could drop level appropriate loot.
Complexity isn't depth. You could argue that moment to moment gameplay, early D4 has more depth than early PoE because of mob structure, more tactical skill use, movement skill from the beginning and combat built around it etc.

It's also a great game, shallow or not. Great art direction, mood, punchy combat, open world, music, there's plenty to like there. I hate the mmo circus and the cities, it all ruins the desolate mood they promoted in the trailers but that's it, other than that it's fun and pleasurable to play. Just don't treat as rpg but an action game, even the level scaling makes sense then.

Why is it difficult to understand that a slick looking, slick playing beta of a super popular franchise and massively awaited instalment in a genre that has seen a massive resurgence in popularity recently would be popular with streamers, or anyone else for that matter, boggles the mind, it really does.

Diablo 4 has a different set of agendas than POE and just because something seems to be simpler or less complex does not mean it's worse to play, less engaging or lacking complexity.
They have clearly worked hard on figuring out how to add excitement and engagement without unnecessary complexity, and that's the main area POE has always failed in with all the bloat like an old install of windows xp.

If every game was the same, that would be a very boring world

That's just PoE fanbois showed their inner insecurity. If Diablo4 got too popular, then all the 'kool' streamers would spend more time playing Diablo4 than PoE. Suddenly, PoE will go from the most beloved aRPG to niche, nerdy game for a group of excel spreadsheet enjoyers. Hence D4 must be trahs.
they pay the streamers dude. Games were better when it wasn't a profession as well.
Play whatever you like? I'll be playing both.
I like Kipps very fair and in depth review of the D4 beta:

I love POE and have supported it many times over the years. It will continue to be popular and people will continue to play it.

I don't get why people are so protective of a game!

Will D4 kill off POE, no it won't. What it will do is bring a great game out that millions will happily play. I loved the beta, it was good to get back to it's darker roots and i am hyped for the open beta so i can try other classes.

I have bought the game and will play it a lot i am sure.

Don't worry about POE, it can look after itself. Just go enjoy a great game, for the number of hours enjoyment, new games like this are great value in my opinion.

The problem here is the time issue. Most diehard PoE fans probably only play PoE and nothing else. (Well actually they did, but it was when waiting for a new PoE league.)

So what happen when you want to play 2 live service games? You have to split the time for both. It's like having 2 jobs. And the fans of one job think the other job sux, you should devote all your time to one better job only. Yea, can't have fun when you are not doing the best job. It's also one of the reason why a certain portion of gamers think live service games all sux.

Don't think it will be a huge problem, if they end up having some time between league launches. If one developer is hellbent on creating more competition than needed, it might be more of a hassle for some players.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.
