"The customer is always right in matters of taste" is the correct quote, which is hilarious to me because it makes all these threads hating on Diablo subjective bullshitting.
Oh will comment on this. I love it. So much snark in the original. And uppity customers just cherrypicked the bit without it. Customers co-opting retail workers' sentiments with zero regard for nuance or context. Fucking typical.

The problem is that its going right past one of us. I'm not sure which. So stubborn to admit that something you hate might actually be good, or me unable to possibly fathom how another person is incapable of realizing this could even happen to begin with. (And then defend it!)
Then you comppund this with localized bias here, and we venture into crazy town. Essentially the starting premise in the PoE context is immediately "PoE good, Diablo / Blizzard bad." To use your language. Why start there? What's the upside?
I suppose I can bow out here just for sake of everyone in general, but I'm truly stunned how relatively intelligent people I've interacted with for years have absolutely no capability to even grasp how they might not have a reasonable viewpoint on Diablo. (Or to a lesser degree anything that isn't PoE)
It's not some multi-million person mass delusion. Lol anyways have a nice D4 beta weekend all.
It's quite remarkable to me as well to be quite honest and F me if I don't want to take one more stab at it. This is the last one, then I'm solid agree to disagree territory.
Let me paint a scenario:
You are at a friend's house and a song comes on. It's from a genre that you both like and an artist that neither you nor your friend know so bias is limited. It's the first time the song is ever played. Your friend clearly likes the song whereas you absolutely hate it -- like nails on a chalkboard.
Do you have enough information to make a decision about whether that song is good or bad in this scenario?
I'll take a final stab too, and tbh I'm just exhausted on Diablo and D3 discussions specifically. It's come up more often due to the D4 imminent launch. I'm sure there will D4 threads in off topic and GD I might swing into, but I'm over this "D3 ruined the franchise, it's a trash game, it's candy crush, it's souless, it failed" and all that nonsense hyperbole.
For what you wrote above, A better example to illustrate this situation, would be a younger person listens to their Dad's or Grandfather's Beatles or Elvis music. They hate it. They call it trash. While its subjective, I don't doubt the youngster hates the Beatles, to then extrapolate that into anything more substantive, to me, doesn't make much sense. That's the logic gap I cannot get around. The Beatles / Elvis were good, the kid just doesn't like them. Right? Please say yes for my own sanity lol.
Or someone goes to the Sistine Chapel on a tour and isn't impressed with the ceiling. They are more of a Bansky person. "Michelangelo isn't very good, he was just popular because he did that Church thing". That would certainly would be an interesting thing to say during the tour lol. Again I struggle with the logic here in general.
I actually do understand that preference exists of course. That people like things that are unpopular all the time (hell that's me with 4x strategy games, & war sims), and vice versa some people don't like popular stuff that widely accepted as "good". What I can't for the life of me understand, is how we get to that meaning ultimately after a subjective analysis, and dismissing of actual data (numbers dont mean anything), we then conclude that our opinion somehow translates into the shifting the reality of the situation / game / product, whatever in a general context. It doesn't mesh for me.

Ironically, your comment about subjectivity hits the nail on the head. 100% agreed that opinions about Diablo are subjective in terms of love AND hate.
For both games, let's not forget that.
Don’t worry about me. I know this is a subjective discussion and that’s the point we’ve tried to make over and over again. That’s the crux of the issue here.

Of course. I have no problem with people disliking PoE or finding it "bad". I disagree, of course - but that's beside the point.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

Ps nubs, phrazz, ds44: love you guys and your devotion to taking this shit seriously but I cannot keep up so sorry for not engaging more. Re lens you are probably right. Otoh it's an odd lens I now possess: i have been deep inside and have emerged on the other side and now see PoE almost painfully close to how people who knew at a glance to stay away see it. Mine is not a unique view even if it can be traced back to unique experiences. A cynic might say I spent a lot of resources learning for myself what someone smarter than me learned for free and almost instantly.
I am not, at least, quite up to the point of paying for a life wellness coach or pet psychologists but only because I don't believe either would work for me. I am gullible when I want to be, I guess you could say, and when it came to PoE oh, it was almost like it was tailor made for my need to invest in something both benevolent and selfish at different strata. And I am still about 35% sure the Ruler pack was made with 2012 me in mind.
Okay off to play $10 ARPG.

I was kind of looking for a yes/no on that one since that was the core of the question. But based upon your response, I think you're saying there is not enough information in the scenario to decide if it is good or bad. If that is the case, I have to respectfully disagree and move on. Enjoy D4 this weekend!
Thanks for all the fish!

I'm not sure POE offers anything that screams stay away for me. At least not any more than any other game. It certainly sucks gaming addicts in and chews them up, but I would say that happens with every game for an addict. Some stick with one game while others just bounce from one to the next. Those two things feel like a distinction without a difference.
Some games also suck you in more than others. This game might be the most healthy gaming habit I've had in a long time. When I played DOTA, it was not healthy. It was always just one more game over and over again. This one I can stop on a dime and come back in most situations with a few notable exceptions.
I think it depends on the game and the person playing it whether it is a game that someone should stay away from.
Thanks for all the fish!
