Do you like Lab? Well, Sanctum is basically Lab.
I love lab. I also know I'm probably alone in this, which I understand, but I do. I like the theme, I like the idea of side areas with traps and hidden rooms and I don't mind the traps. I'm not even good at speedrunning it, I just run it.
I also know it's not particularly rewarding compared to other stuff. I still like it.
Sanctum sounds nothing like the Lab.
Nothing.
You know what it sounds like? Sounds like Blight. GGG went "hey, let's turn the game into tower defense!", and it was terrible (if you think it's ok or nice now, you should've seen it at release).
"Let's make a roguelike!" they're saying this time.
Better brace for impact.

The rewards have to be absolutely ridiculously insane or the mechanic has to be easily cheeseable or everyone will quit the league immediately.
There have been no special rewards from the sanctum revealed so far, and the special relics are confirmed not going core so there's no point in farming it unless the return is 1.5x that of mapping or better.
GGG says league mechanics can be 2x as rewarding as mapping and that's ok but they don't really know how to calculate that correctly. Lakes in Kalandra were ~0.5-0.75x as rewarding as mapping and that was after all the buffs. If Sanctum is the same *and* it's obnoxious --> lowest retention league of all time.
Potential of Sanctum looks super high but that's only if you're able to complete it.
Chris said something like "don't expect to complete it on the first go" so i expect they are challenging, which is ok. You'll get better at it with more practice. Luck is also a factor so it doesn't become cakewalk.
It's skill based which is probably the best thing about this league mechanic.
I'm fairly confident it will be very rewarding AFTER people get some practice. There is no single reason to make unrewarding holydays league after everything that happened, just don't expect to stack dozens of chaos after 3 days of play.
I can't wait next Friday. :)
edit: scratch all this, it's garbage

its nothing like lab. Its more like alva.
lab you can take all the dmg you want traps are basically something that you ignore cus they dont do anything if you gear right they are just an annoyance that you get tripped up on for a second here or there.
here you fuck up you get bounced out.

this is much worse than lab tho.. this "resolve" is a massive bait for people thinking that bullshit isnt gonna happen on any of their runs and gonna lose their runs to stupid rng situations..
I would call this "the lab experiment" than anything else..
We gonna see I suppose. We actually don't know whether auto-attacks from mobs will still deplete resolve as they only mention "telegraphed attacks".

They are not like Resolve though.
They are parallel (to health/life) "lose if it goes to zero" mechanics. In that the same as Resolve. The exact mechanics of them are different of course but the principle of there being more than one "lifebar" is there in all the mentioned cases.
And another example: There is also "Larn" roguelike with a timer for the whole thing which could be modified by some scrolls.
Is there any Rogue-like where being hit by monsters depletes it though? I think thee is stress or something in Darkest Dungeon but not sure how that works.
Main mechanic that limits you in this games is life though. It's about stayin alive first and foremost.

I did think of EXACTLY that question as I was posting.
What if the league mechanic is just fun?
The problem is the resolve mechanic. Even if you crush content, even if you enjoy the mechanism, ever time you are chipped for 50 damage you get closer to getting kicked out.
That doesnt feel like it is going to be fun. I dont know why, with the risk of dying, they also needed resolve?
If I play, I will play some ballista totem build, either Storm Rain or EA, and I know how to avoid being hit. But is fun?
I do like roguelike games on Steam, so Im against the mechanic but why oh why does resolve exist?
Exactly. Resolves clashes with core ARPG and PoE design.

I'm actually with OP on this one, this league feels like Heist pre-alert nerf.
The cherry on top is that it also feels like it might replace eternal lab in PoE2, IF it works.

I got as far as the Resolve mechanic in the presentation and stopped watching from that point. I have zero interest in my ARPG being turned into a precision platform game. Happy for those that enjoy that type of mechanic, but I personally hate it. I already hate Lab and only do it to get the Ascendancies.
Also, why does everything have to be a dark, gloomy dungeon? Did you guys hire the art designer from the last season of Game of Thrones? What's the point of your environment artists putting in their hard work if I can never see it? Just give me a QoL brightness slider so I can actually see where I'm going.
I might play the league, currently undecided as it depends on whether a couple of build ideas might be viable, but if I do I'll end up treating it like Synthesis. I'll do the usual clearing of campaign and maps and will avoid the Sanctum altogether.
I still think the state of the game for 3.20 will be worse than what it was back several leagues ago. You know, before The Vision tm was rolled out.
Each league I feel less and less excited about PoE 2.0

Are you cautiously optimistic about Sanctum?

IIRC in ADOM there are monsters - 'Corruptor' I think - that cause corruption by hitting you so in that sense they deplete the "uncorrupted" bar. And I think there was some corruption trap also. Most monsters and traps dont cause corruption though.
There is also some roguelike - TOME maybe, not sure - with sanity points or some such thing. Far as I remember (may be wrong) there are some special monsters that can damage sanity.

The food and corruption things typically limit the time the player has for farming and exploring and tricky (like hit & run) fighting.
No wonder it's lost, it's in the middle of the jungle!

Definitely not saying resolve should be nerfed, and the Sanctum made easy, but the mechanic itself sure sounds ultra annoying to me at least. I hate the lab
Affliction and Necropolis worst leagues ever. The current game design has slowly turned this game into a loot-shower fest, chase uniques are way too available; and obtaining chase items through stacked decks simply isn't fun. Rework stacked decks needed.

It isn't really like stress in darkest dungeon, Stress just operates as a second health bar to give mechanical depth (by having skills effect either or both) its just a straight replacement for a roguelike life bar because that wouldn't work in PoE.
