In 2022, we would have a lot of H&S games. Will PoE survive it?

I played Lost Ark on a Russian server, and it's dogshit.
PoE4life
To be honest i'm happy that new games of the same genre are coming out, last Epoch seems ambitious and Lost Ark well from what i know it's already very well established in Korea, but most of all i think that new releases are good even for Path of Exile, competition is an healthy thing, Path of Exile has been around for a very long time and established himself as a landmark in the H&S genre, at least in my eyes it has even competing with the likes of Diablo back in the day.

I guess that people are and were happier ore even satisfied with previous leagues, the game has had ups and downs for sure but that's part of a game like this especially when it has been around for so many years but i don't think that new games coming out for the H&S genre will affect the ability for PoE to survive and also we forget this, let's see how those incoming games will hold up vs PoE and how they will endure the test of time, i have seen my fair share of hype trains and have seen games to be forgotten fairly quickly, i don't say dead but forgotten, look at Wolcen for example and other games of other genres.

We often take things for granted and are often really quick to forget how and where a game like PoE has changed, adapted, evolved and managed with more or less success to survive and thrive with the test of time, let's just observe how things play out and then once those games come out and actually pass the hype from early days after launch how will they endure as well.
Undecember - Planned Release Date: 1Q. 2022 (January 13) Korea

Lost Ark - Coming 11 February, 2022

PoE next league starts around January 21

Next year will be amazing, so many good games to choose from.

PoE will survive but I hope it will have more players.
I like Scourge having extra 200-600 IIQ makes for a nice drop. Without it grind becomes tedious fast so I would like to see it in 3.17.

I feel like the real question here isn't "Will PoE survive being competed against?" but rather "Will new ARPG games survive competing against PoE?"

It is, for all intents and purposes, practically impossible to match the level of content depth that PoE has in a newly released game.

The whole situation here is basically David vs Goliath, except Goliath is widely loved by the masses; David has two broken legs, a slingshot made of tissue paper, and is going blind in one eye.

There's some very small chance that PoE gets unseated, but it would shock me if it did happen.

For the examples given:

Lost ark is pay to win trash, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Last Epoch is a diamond in the very very very rough. Maybe it can compete with another 3 - 5 years of development, here's to hoping.

I have literally never heard of Undecember before. Not a good sign that the game has had adequate dev time from people experienced at making ARPGs. Obviously, I can't actually comment on the content of the game seeing as it seems to have materialised out of thin air, but I would be doubly surprised if this was what unseated PoE from the throne compared to the other two examples.

This is not to say that it wouldn't be nice if someone did manage to light a fire under the asses of GGG, active and equal competition is always healthy for consumers.

Ugh what is this even?

First off, talk about revisionist history. PoE at the same point in LE's development was far far more "rough". Let's not sugar coat the closed & open beta PoE experiences.

Second, LA isnt pay to win, unless you are a massive idiot, with fuck you money, and are worried about a few dozen hours of gameplay. You cannot pay for power, which is what winning is in PvP. My guess is you read a hot take and are parroting ignorance.

And lastly, PoE should be absolutely dominating the market and genre. Not begging for the scraps of some thousands of concurrent players. Even at its highest peak, during it's most popular launch, was it even a fraction of Diablo 3 or D2R for example. Hell D2R had MORE THAN DOUBLE the record of PoE player concurrency of all time, weeks after launch, even with pretty bad server issues. PoE should have massive player counts given the current arpg options. But they dont, and it speaks volumes.

The market is ripe for competition, and quite frankly PoE is moving in the wrong direction. The data shows it in stark reality. (3.15 & 3.16)

Maybe GGG can turn it around, but the real question is why are they having to turn anything around with very little competition? Big missteps from a development standpoint, and I will be very curious to see how that manifests in their revenue performance. There may very well be "changes" coming for GGG, and I wouldnt be shocked in the slightest.

Theres alot of upcoming competition for sure. Some more or less interesting. Now blizzard also announced to push its first d2r ladder early next year.

Nothing of that will kill poe. But some of those releases are probably gonna take their toll.

All of this makes me hope that they come up with something that get people hooked like crazy since there is now at least a certain pressure.

After the last leagues, i have my doubts tho.

+1 lost ark is just terrible

Imho, the only thing that could kill poe , is Chris's vision. For example, take a look at WoW, nobody killed the king, it rotted alive because of devs...
3.13 Was the best league ever!
3.18 Rest in peace my beloved recombinators, I'm gonna miss you...
Threads like these are funny. We have a few ney-sayers, we have a few yay-sayers and we have a few people trying to be objective.

I'm lazy, but if someone could make an extensive list over all games that were supposedly going to "kill PoE" since PoE 1.0, it would be a very interesting read.

PoE might be in a worse spot, both when it comes to numbers and reputation than ever before. Personally, I don't think it is, but I might be wrong. Anyhow, I seriously think that people are underestimating the drawback effect of the league cycles.

To compete with PoE, a game needs to be able to challenge PoE in the long run. Not days or weeks, but months and even years. Not many games are designed that way, at least outside of the MMO genre.

yeah I think to compete with PoE a game has to come out that has depth and content updates as well as a set of fresh ideas. it would be almost a miracle. like, a diablo-like genre upheaval which I dont think can happen in todays climate.

PoE having almost 10 years worth of league content gives it an enormous upper hand against any competitors with similar formulas
