" Many people these days apparently want a barely-interactive movie. A movie that about half of those people don't want to even pay attention to while they barely interact with it. What sort of enjoyment people get out of such products is beyond my comprehension. But, based on the number of games like that we see made... there is clearly a market for that sort of pointless codswallop. I hope PoE never becomes such. |

" We actually had a huge discussion on this in my guild a year ago or so. It seems that A LOT of players, putting in hundred of hours into the game each league, don't really enjoy the main gameplay (killing monsters and bosses), and all they care about, is the progression; better items, better character, more power. It's ALL about the dopamine for them. While that is VERY important too, I found it kinda surprising that people are spending hundred of hours killing monsters, something they do not particulary like, just to get access to what they do enjoy. What some people seem to forget, is that the dopamine rush is impossible if it's not a rare happening, or that you have the ability to fail. Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

Ye every time this discussion is about to start grinding again, it makes me sick.
It's just another of those bs design that are in for very undefendable reasons, that's it. You can't make such penalty ever look good in a game so reliant on internet connection, bug free code and one-shotty design. Like -there could be numerous better solutions to make it not a frustration, but you had better not argue with these folks if you wanna keep your sanity. And you had better not offer alternatives since it's a dead end. I mean, GGG doesn't really discuss on their forums but they have these middle men doing it for them instead, it's such a Don Quijote business to go over this. So nothing to see here. " It's not undefendable, just because you disagree with it. Death penalty is a way for you to make choices on what content to run, what multipliers to run or avoid. It's also a way for you to care about your character, its defenses and offenses and the balance in creating it. It's also a way for you to "not wanting to die". You should want to avoid death. Dying shouldn't be a trivial thing without consequences. Content and choices matter more with some kind of death penalty. Is the current one perfect? Probably not. But no penalty? heavily against it. " Clearly. What you don't get is that there really is a discussion to be had here, in which productive criticism should be welcomed. Different strokes for different folks, so your opinion is not the only valid one and your horizon does not define "the truth". The discussion to be had is just not as black-or-white as some people make it out. It's not "Do we need a death penalty? YES / NO". It is "What are good ways to ensure player accomplishments in this game mean anything?" Or "What's a good mechanism to ensure players can fail?", etc... The DP is just one really simple implementation of such a mechanism. It does have its down sides, which cause such threads as this. Many, many suggestions for other mechanisms have been made in the past. Depending on your opinion, some of those would fulfill the role with fewer downsides. It does not help your case to label all who criticise the current implementation of the DP as kids who want to trivialize PoE. It only makes you look like an offensive person with a limited imagination. May your maps be bountiful, exile

" I agree with that. The only problem is, that those discussions about Death penalty are brought up every league and everytime basically the same pros and cons and constructive suggestions come up. It's like ground hog day really. Nothing changes and nothing get's achieved, other than ppl get annoyed by yet another Death penalty thread #247. The only solution I can see is making a collection thread about Death penalty with everything brought up the last years including suggestion for different versions of a penalty. Then bump it once every week or something... maybe even try to make it sticky (dunno if GGG will do that). Otherwise I only see the same shit over and over again and ppl just get more pissed and stop discussing constructive. They'll just start to insult every new player who has a problem with the exp penalty. (it gets more toxic over time) PoE2 0.4 Character:
