Question: When did crafting become the main aspect of an ARPG?

I don't know how many people here have played Diablo 2 but crafting, apart from rune words you could look up on the internet, was not the main aspect. It was either grinding or trading.

Looking at the dissatisfied post I can't help but notice that many people believe crafting to be the end-all of everything. Why? Why such an insane focus on crafting in an ARPG?

And btw don't tell me that crafting has always been numba one in PoE, you all know its trading. Until it became trading for crafts.

It's not about crafting, it's about getting decent gear. In D2 you had cheap and powerful runewords and a ton of BIS unique items that were pretty easy to farm/trade. POE doesn't have any of that, just 99,99% of all drops that aren't shown in any decent loot filter.
Nerfing harvest after 2 months of league is bad, a lot of ppls quited the game untill now, and a lot will quit after this update.
A lot of people have end game gear with harvest craft (me included) and it will be extremly difficult for the new players to the league to get end game items. By the time they will have the money to get a main body armour end game for example, the league will end. Unless they increase the mirror and exalt drop

If you are picking up and IDing enough items to find a random item worth keeping you are wasting hours and hours of time for nothing more than mostly alt shards.

Gratefully, it wasn't always like that. Happy they are somewhat going back, especially with the new rare itemization in poe 2

Depends on game you play. SSF? Better be looking at rares for awhile at least. Trade? I used buy all gear starting at maps. Tabula even before that. you'd have to id 100 rings before beating a 2c rare. Literally no point. Did the unid chaos recipe and bought.

Good point about trade. I just view that as a separate option not bound to the core philosophies of rare items (thus, nullifying any blame on the devs).

we never had crafting only gambling until harvest.

I think the main reason for many people to ask for better crafting options in PoE are:

- mediocre uniques: There's hardly a unique item left in the game that people really want to have.

In Diablo II on the other hand, there were uniques that were BIS or very close to. But even if they weren't, it wasn't really a problem, because they were still good.
Moreover, drops were balanced differently and, at least in LoD, you had the upgrade recipes. So, you found a normal weapon with godly mods... you could upgrade the base type to... forgot the name... champion(?) version of the base.

GGG chose the route of uniques having significant drawbacks which turned most uniques as undesirable by most (which must be frustrating for oldschool supporters). Diablo 2 uniques had no drawbacks and made them best in slot most of the time. The design philosophy was similar to Relics and Artefacts from the Might and Magic saga.

It is a delicate balance between finding loot, crafting it and trading it. But this time the pendulum has swung too much to the crafting aspect.

OP, have you ever tried crafting decent amazon gloves or faster cast rings/amulet in Diablo 2 ?

i played Diablo2 on actual endgame where you needed to craft godly gear to have for PVP. sure, rest was just uniques slotted

but than again, why do we craft for in PoE ?
ah to be stronger to farm better,
we farm in poe just in sake of farming lmao

cause i dont see any other endgame in this piece of shit game...

gear matters alot in PVP scene
in PVE scene, i dont give a flying fuck
Because its the clearest most direct path to power and with the inception of the hcssf craze and racing crafting your own gear is an important skill

Crafting is not the main aspect of PoE.

What we have is not crafting.

Whats crafting then? Picking up an axe and chopping wood in the forest?
