Question: When did crafting become the main aspect of an ARPG?
The entire POE's currency system is centered around crafting and this guy just asked.
Fucking clueless lmao |

If shoving an orb into an item is crafting then Call of Duty has crafting because you can change your gun's various components.

" That's pretty much the answer. Drops in POE are dogshit. Only way to get good gear is either grind like a mad man until you get that one in a million drop that's usable or trade trade trade. And when doing the latter you have to deal with an ancient trade system that's hardly any better than what D2 had 20 years ago. People are sick of this obviously, they want to get at least decent gear without having to trade. Harvest offered this. Now they think that's no longer the case in 3.14 so they complain about it. ARPGs aren't about crafting, but they are about items. And crafting is the only way in POE to obtain good items that's not entirely obnoxious. I would say, crafting is not a bonus for bad drop rates, it is essentiell in arpg games. The other way is D3, there you could easily forget any crafting but crimson set and it does not make a difference, because you get overlooted.
PoE is the contraire it is really hard to find your items along the questing story or later just by picking up. My first characters in PoE tried it and ended as weak not working "heroes" with good thoughts but poor. You need at least to craft some stats at the crafting bench to your found things. But the thread seems a little as if crafting would be Must Do for all and this is not correct. Looking at some streamers when the just use some 100 ex for try and error will never happen to a casual player, because be happy if you find 5 ex in a whole league. Maybe if you buy supporter packs the drop rates are better. So crafting and real crafting makes difference. In 4 years as casual player i found about 50 EX. in 4 years, this would be a short crafting orgy if i start slamming ex´s. |

When looting was always bad and trading was designed to suck.

In old aRPGs it was reasonable to find gear for your character. Even if you didn't find all the best items, it was still possible to play through the game on lower quality items (I played D2LoD only in HC and selffound and some special builds aside, it worked really well.
In PoE it's not that way. Playing selffound means you are missing out on 90% of the games potential, because those skills only work with a ton of multipliers from your gear. Here's the thing though: Trading is just crafting with a set result. You browse .trade, pick the recipe you want to use, take your crafting currency and exchange it for a specific item result. Sure prices and availability vary, but just think of .trade as a random crafting bench which offer's you a specific supply of items which may change everytime you access it. Power and crafting cost will change over the course of the season. |

" Luckily d2 had plenty of bots crafting and cheaters crafting without losing materials to generate enough crafts to meet demand. I think a big issue with comparing games to d2 is that d2 is more than 20 years old and hasn’t had a content patch since PoE was in beta. I would expect newer games to improve on older games rather than emulate them. |
