Wolcen overtook POE as the new number 1 arpg game on Steam (127k concurrent players at the moment)
" At the game's release both PoE and D3 were at the slow end of their content cycles and a month from reset/restart. I don't know about GD I think there's an expansion coming but not sure of the ETA so no excitement there either. So Wolcen is good for a 3-4 week distraction and then it's up to them to keep the game from being abandoned and forgotten in a month. It's a decent game and fun to play for now. Combat is clunky but ok once I got used to it. It will be impossible to really balance though, given how much you can invest into min/maxing crit or ailments even a midlevel character can destroy everything with one attack/spell. The main gimmick of balancing willpower (spells) and rage (attacks) is not well implemented though. Attacks like lawnmower mode and jaws of death pretty much chew up bosses so I just went straight the passive node that switches will out for rage and always have a full attack ability bar from level 13 on. I haven't found any "game breaking" bugs the only one that annoys me are the bats. Near the beginning of the story you go through a series of caves where about half of the swarming bats can't be targeted. So using your default attack ends up with your character running around waving his weapon at a bat he can't hit. It took me about 30 seconds to realize you start with a basic attack and FIVE customizable buttons so I just use an AOE skill in one of them and kill the bats that way. They appear to have patched the major bugs and exploits and expanded the server capacities - but I didn't even notice because I have offline and online characters to play as I choose. I've never seen an online game launch without cries of "WURSTEST LAUNCH EHHHVAAAAR!!!" with bugs and queues so that just means the game was made by mere humans and not the infallible gods who grace the forums with their presence and omnipotence but seem never to get around to releasing these perfectly coded games they can dash off one handed in 30 min while eating a sandwich for lunch. Anyway, I bought the game during a steam sale a couple of years ago (for $15) and played it a bit before/after they threw out the old story/content and started over, so I've already more than got my money's worth from it. I learned a long time ago to ignore both hype and hate on the internet, truth is always somewhere around the middle. Last edited by tolunart#3840 on Feb 21, 2020, 10:33:22 AM

" I'm wildly confused why everyone is writing off Wolcen instead of hoping it gets better. Your precious PoE could only benefit from a serious competitor (which Wolcen has the potential to be, in a few weeks/months). I feel like we're going down the World of Warcraft path, where FF14 comes out and everyone says "WoW is better", every single MMO that releases, "WoW is better". And where are we at now? WoW is a boring, repetitive, uninspired garbage pile that everyone gets hyped for once a year, only to be let down a week or two into it. Instantly writing off any competitor to a game intrinsically lets the "big" game company think that they can slack off and keep pushing out half-broken mediocre content, because people are sheep and will actively push anything else away. That said, I agree Wolcen needs a lot of work. My first build (had no idea it was a mistake) used the 50% damage per shield block point passive. They fixed it to the value it was supposed to be and my DPS dropped by about 70%. So now I have an endgame character that basically can't do content anymore. So I'll reroll and try something new. The best part about early adoption of a game (even if it needs work), is that you get to discover really cool combinations of things before anyone else. You get to be part of the meta-shift, and you get to learn along with everyone instead of just being yelled at for being a noob by players that have played for years. TL;DR - Blindly defending YOUR game of choice doesn't invalidate other people's choices. Stop trying to act like it does. Last edited by Redthorne82#3177 on Feb 21, 2020, 10:44:12 AM

" It's easy to reset your points, there are buttons under you ability scores with the costs in gold/magic tokens. Choose crit or DOT and concentrate on abilities and passives that buff whatever you chose. I've mostly played melee so far but right now Bladestorm and Bleeding Edge do massive damage whichever direction you go. I found a unique weapon, a 2-hand mace equippable at level 15 that does up to 500 base damage, over 5x the damage of any rare weapon at that level. Ability bonuses alone can triple that damage with passive bonuses it kills most bosses in a few seconds and should take me to the endgame without needing an upgrade. " At least GGG wont make me pay 40$ to test their shit. |

" So... Like in PoE where, for example, you start as a Wtich but then you go with attack nodes and you play with something like Flicker Strike? Yeah, PoE totally doesnt have that... |

" Unless the Wolcen devs stole your CC they dont do that either. If you want to give a game $40 sight unseen that's on the consumer. Nobody is "made" to do anything. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

" Well, you clearly NEED to pay 40$ or you wont eb able to play. And then they relese this garbage which is pretty much alpha tests. So they just made you pay 40$ to test their shit. At least PoE gives me acces to their "alpha tests" for free. |

" Yeah PoE's 1000 hour QA is outstanding...but hey it's all free so who cares! "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

" I like to watch for games on sale, you can get $60 games for $20. Of course you don't get to be all epeen-flashy and brag about beating the game three days after release that way. I don't usually prepay for games either (look at Star Citizen if you wonder why it's a bad idea to throw money at games that don't exist yet) but Wolcen was playable and on sale for $15 so I took a chance on it and more than got my money's worth out of it. If they keep improving it then that's a bonus. Games are cheap entertainment though. My wife and I can spend $100+ on dinner and a movie, four hours later it's a memory and we still have to drive home. I can spend half that on a game and get 10 hours of entertainment minimum, a good game is replayable for months or years. If you get 10 hours of play out of Wolcen that's just $4 an hour, less than it costs to sleep through Rise of Skywalker. |
