Having us kill civilians in Oriath Square is tasteless.

I_NO raised them as spectres. I dare you to do it with real people. Let me know if you succeed.

So the only criteria for "real" and "nor real" is this thing?

Really a great place to see how obnoxious the internet can be for sure, for pretty much no reason.

(I_NO's joke kinda made me laugh though I must admit)

OP has a point, taking small parts outside of their whole context and attacking based on it is simply stupid, but I don't expect most people here to get that.

I entirely agree, I don't care much about the issue at hand, but it's valid and constructive feedback nonetheless, those citizens in Oriath serve pretty much no purpose (the way they currently are, as friendly fire isn't a thing to begin with), it's simply something poorly thought out imo.

Thanks, Fruz. You and I often disagree, but at least we can do so in interesting ways.

For what it's worth, this thread has played out almost exactly as I predicted in the original post.

A friend who no longer posts in these forums (but is well known and used to be quite active) asked me yesterday what I hoped to accomplish by creating the topic. My answer was rather simple: "Make thoughtful people think a bit more. And if the less-thoughtful regulars are annoyed at the same time, well, that's fine by me." Based on the responses in this thread, I'd say both of those goals have been met in spades.

Thoughtful people who agree with me and thoughtful people who disagree with me have created good posts. I am grateful to both.

Slightly, ahem, "less-than-thoughtful" people have created troll posts and or strawmen (the Shagsbeard strawman being the most common), while also expressing their irritation with the topic's existence.

The former show that I didn't waste my time. The latter make me giggle with glee.

Its completely in line with the story, the recent events in it, it reminds you that this is Wraeclast and not Azeroth.
It would be a huge mistake to go down this slippery slope of conforming to peoples puny feelings. In fact i would say it is great design if it makes you feel gross killing them, that is exactly what was intended im sure.

If you were reasonably able to avoid killing them, then I would agree with your post 100%

Run through area? No quest to kill anything there.
I'm a forum warrior, i was born to post, raised to defend my league. Now my post has been removed, chained and exiled by mods who Ban. Ban is my brother; i do not fear it. I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.

Yep, I know that there are (much) greater problems with the game than this in 2019.

Yep, I know that some of the less thoughtful denizens of this forum will ridicule this very topic being brought up. ("STFU, SJW!")

But I have to say it: It just feels gross.

I know that killing innocents in video games is a thing. I actually don't necessarily object to it. In some cases it drives a narrative forward, or is even done to try and force new perspectives upon the players. It's never easy to do well, but it does have a potentially legitimate role in narrative design.

But we all know that PoE doesn't have such narrative aspirations. In the absence of the above, having the hero of the story kill "frightened citizens" (as they are labeled), just because they are also being targeted by the rebels who are against the civilians' government, doesn't feel edgy nor impactful. It feels repulsive. Not everyone wants to play a villain, so why virtually force it upon us by flagging these NPCs as enemies?

Easy fix: Keep their behavior, and make them untargetable.

Stop virtue signaling. A true sense of morality is deeply personal and doesn't have to be shared with anonymous people on the internet.

Do you understand what this section of the forum is for ?

So, because the game does not realistically (yeah, expecting players to use single target skills past a1 or 2 ....) allow you to save civilians (that nothing would lead us to think that they are guilty, enough to deserve being slaughtered), you should see them (or know that they are going to) be masscred even though you obviously have the power level to do something about it ?

and .... for what ? (because that is the premise here, this serves no actual purpose)
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.

And what would be the point of your response, if it isn't a kind of virtue signaling? Also, whether real names are known or not, the question "Is this really anonymous?" arises when you've got long term posters interacting again and again on the forums for years on end.

Every now and again while moving through that zone I notice the bits and bytes coded to act as bystanders dying to my character's auto-targeting or AOEs. The feeling that arises isn't particularly strong, but it isn't particularly good either. It's also an odd design choice given how the rest of the game works, and so it (at least temporarily) weakens whatever sense of immersion might otherwise exist.

I can see why somebody could have a strong enough negative reaction to want to make the OP.
Now that prestige classes will finally leave lab in 4.0, will GGG get it right this time or will they find new ways to repeat old mistakes?

I'm actually disappointed that that "SJWs suck!" rant (thank you, whoever you are, I'm sorry I don't remember your name) was deleted by a mod.

It didn't really break the CoC in any way I can see ("obnoxious antagonism" is such an ambiguous and therefore bullshit guideline) and yet perfectly illustrated the kind of response I predicted in the OP in an almost stereotypically accurate fashion.

Thanks again, sir! Your sacrifice did not go unnoticed. I'd buy you a beer if I remembered who you were.

The concern here is not what the individual does, the concern here is that it doesnt make sense storywise or roleplaywise.

Its like if skyrim would automatically make every civilian in the cities hostile towards you.
While this can happen if u do certain things, its not the normal state because it would be fucking stupid...
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.
