Having us kill civilians in Oriath Square is tasteless.

What is "real"?

But for those who do care, it may seem both unnecessary and tasteless. Sure, perhaps I should not care but I do. And GGG knows that some Players care and hence the "tasteless" comment.

Yeah but those ppl also have right to keep their opinion to themselfs. Why not? Me for example when i play GTA i always (almost) drive according to drivers laws. Why not? I like it that way. But im not bragging about it on GTA forum and try to change anything in game. Whats the point?

And again - they are not innocent.
this thread is so retarded i cant believe it....hurrdurr oh no unreal datas get nullified oh noes!!!

It's supposed to. It's not something the game even "has" you do, after all. It's collateral damage that, depending on the type of character you play, (which is only the most important concept in the game) is difficult or impossible to avoid. You also see the others from the prison break do it willfully. They were *prisoners*. The viewpoint that they are senseless, murderous rioters and the one that they are legitimately fighting against their enemies in class war are ultimately both valid.

But we all know that PoE doesn't have such narrative aspirations.
The fact it's common to play the game so fast that you miss the story and its commentary doesn't mean it's not there. Path of Exile's base campaign has some of the finest writing in the genre. It's an examination of the nature of evil and how power creates it that leaves the setting with few, if any, clear heroes. The player character is certainly not meant to be one.

Yep, I know that there are (much) greater problems with the game than this in 2019.

Yep, I know that some of the less thoughtful denizens of this forum will ridicule this very topic being brought up. ("STFU, SJW!")

But I have to say it: It just feels gross.

I know that killing innocents in video games is a thing. I actually don't necessarily object to it. In some cases it drives a narrative forward, or is even done to try and force new perspectives upon the players. It's never easy to do well, but it does have a potentially legitimate role in narrative design.

But we all know that PoE doesn't have such narrative aspirations. In the absence of the above, having the hero of the story kill "frightened citizens" (as they are labeled), just because they are also being targeted by the rebels who are against the civilians' government, doesn't feel edgy nor impactful. It feels repulsive. Not everyone wants to play a villain, so why virtually force it upon us by flagging these NPCs as enemies?

Easy fix: Keep their behavior, and make them untargetable.

Don't target them snowflake.

It comes with the esthetic of the game.
Its completely in line with the story, the recent events in it, it reminds you that this is Wraeclast and not Azeroth.
It would be a huge mistake to go down this slippery slope of conforming to peoples puny feelings. In fact i would say it is great design if it makes you feel gross killing them, that is exactly what was intended im sure.

If you were reasonably able to avoid killing them, then I would agree with your post 100%

Here's what is going on in my brain when I kill some civilians.

"Damn, I killed some. GGG wants me to feel guilty. Stupid thing, I shouldn't let them make me feel guilty. I'll try not to kill them all. They should have more hit points."
Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!
+1 to the OP.

I don't know why somebody thought auto-targeting and killing bystanders would add to the atmosphere of the game in a positive way.
Now that prestige classes will finally leave lab in 4.0, will GGG get it right this time or will they find new ways to repeat old mistakes?
It doesn't. It isn't supposed to. Is killing those people gross? Yes. So is the inside of The Beast you slaughtered and crawled out of a few hours ago. The setting is dark, and people who actually pay attention to it should know that it's not just edgelord garbage in that respect.
