EA killed for "Surprise Mechanics", TencentGGG slides on "Mystery Box". How?
it's fine if there are no doubles ; it's questionable if there are.

" Don't like em? Don't buy em. It's that simple. Nobody is forcing people to buy them. Myself I always toss a $20 at them once per league because I think GGG deserves it for all of the work they put into this game. If I get doubles, so be it. I don't get my knickers in a bunch like some people do and rant on a forum about it. It was my choice to buy them. Last edited by Gulch#5697 on Jul 31, 2019, 4:15:52 PM

" Again it's not the point. I don't like meth or drug dealers either, but we can all agree is a shady business, regardless if adults decide to buy them or not. A bit of hyperbole here, but you can't just say business are free to do what they want simply because adults can make decisions. There are better, more ethical ways to monetize the game imo. And we should expect better. The point of thread was trying understand why EA gets murdered on PR by their monetization, and TencentGGG isnt held to the same standard. Gambling loot boxes are bad all the way around. It's my take that both EA and GGG loot boxes are really shitty. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

If you haven't gotten to see Chris's response to this here's a link .

" If you're going to use small size as any kind of defense for any kind of behavior (an already dodgy premise, but meh), then at least use a fair comparison. GGG (owned by Tencent) is analogous to Bioware (owned by EA). EA is analogous to Tencent. Tencent's total equity is approximately ten times that of EA. They've got their fingers in pies you've eaten without even knowing it. They epitomize "big fish in the pond." Wash your hands, Exile! Last edited by gibbousmoon#4656 on Jul 31, 2019, 8:10:07 PM

Honestly, as long as you're completely upfront about what you're doing and allow people to make an informed decision about it, I don't really care what you do.
This is the fundamental difference between EA and GGG. EA is trying to hide their loot boxes and pay to win mechanics, and get you to buy the game anyway, GGG isn't trying to hide anything. I know what the mystery boxes are, I know I don't need anything in them to play the game, and all the jazz. I don't really care on a moral level if a AAA title has pay to win loot boxes, as along as they let everyone know that they have them. I wouldn't buy the game, because I don't think it's fun, but if they give me all the information to make the decision, I don't really care. |

" No, we can't all agree on that. Just because you think it's wrong doesn't mean it is. I'm sorry some snowflakes get offended because they got a dupe for their $3 spent and feel the need to have them banned because their feelings got hurt. If the boxes were $30 then you might have a point. |

I can't fathom that people are incapable of seeing the literal difference between what EA offers and what GGG has. Has tribalism gone too far? Is the "us vs them" mentality the new gospel?

" Just people nowadays. Incapable of seeing things nuanced. Everything is black or white. Either it's "ETHICAL AS HELL, throwing shit at them for free", or it's "UNETHICAL AS HELL, and they should burn, well, in hell". "Ethical as hell" was probably a paradoxical sentence. I'm sorry. Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

" Gambling on it's own isn't a predatory practice, as aspects of said gambling can be found in the most innocuous of circumstances, whether it be the surprise in a cereal box or happy meal (or cracker jacks) or state lottery or even a meal you've never tasted before and may or may not enjoy. The reason EA gets flack in droves is because of what they lock behind those boxes. It's one thing to offer rewards for potentially cheaper than normal through gambling, but predatory to restrict access in such a way that something desired can only be acquired through gambling. I personally hate that the mtx in PoE are per character and not per account and find that is more "predatory" than gambling boxes, but those visuals are purely aesthetic and optional purchases. Yep, totally over league play.
