People do both. They play the stream on a second monitor while playing themselves. And since it's the "no-life nerds" who stream, they usually have information about the best builds and assorted tips and tricks to get through hardcore that other people watch the streams for.

Your statement is both factually correct and misleading.
You do get AoE melee skills. The all time classic is the D2 barbarian Whirlwind skill. This was both melee and AoE. It hit all enemies in a 360 degree arc, within the hit range of the melee weapon.
Melee and AoE are not mutually exclusive.
The damage is weapon based but still it's like a small ranged Freezing Pulse+LMP not real melee skill.
Heavy Strike, Flicker Strike, Double Strike, Glacial Hammer, Dual Strike are real melee skills.
Let's start talking about distances instead of "ranged" and "melee".
Pick an arbitrary distance and call all attacks made under that distance melee, and all attacks made past that distance ranged.
LS is ranged, unless you're hitting with the melee part.
Ice Nova is ranged, unless you have Conc. Effect on it.
Or, specify in game terms "melee" as in weapons designated melee, and skills designated melee. The ones that benefit from melee physical damage passives and gear.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned (another way of saying imo), melee is damage done with a melee weapon that isn't equal to ranged equivalents.
For example, Cleaved, in Nugiyen's case, might seem ranged to some people, but I constitute it as melee as long as it can't do what norml ranged abilities and such can do. It's sort of a grey area, but eh. I'll stick with calling that "melee". And anything shorter range than that, melee as well.
