And I think your estimation must be off, because for 4 rares to equal 1.5 Alt orbs, you'd need on average 7.5 shards per rare. If you look at the wiki for vendor recipes, that just doesn't happen.
Your point of multiclient vs solo still stands. I just wanted to correct a bit of math :)
Now just for the sake of it I filled two tabs in my stash with rares from Merveil Normal, then identified them and calculated the average number of Alteration Shards I got from the vendor.
First tab: 26 rares - 201 Alteration Shards (~7.73 shards/rare)
Second tab: 25 rares - 186 Alteration Shards (~7.44 shards/rare)
Together: 51 rares - 387 Alteration Shards (~7.588 shards/rare)
These rares also generated some Alchemy Shards and Augmentation orbs, in the latter case not creating any Alt-shards at all. So I think my estimation was not too far off, though the calculated average of roughly 7.6 shards per rare might result from too small a sample size. I would welcome other observations on the average number of shards/rare...
best regards
/edit:
Update
30 rares - 249 shards (8.3 shards/rare)
26 rares - 183 shards (~7.04 shards/rare)
57 rares - 446 shards (~7.83 shards/rare)
Together: 113 rares - 878 shards (~7.769 shards/rare)
Again, I don´t think my estimation was way off. Indeed it was pretty good, I think.
Hold on to yer shite load o´ bloody barnacles on me arse-cockles, me hearty!

Instead of actually fixing the multi client abuse.
Running multiple clients is not an abuse, GGG even said some people could do that to get around the stash size limits.
"Two birds with one stone" applies to this fix in my opinion.
First, it makes multiclienting way less effective than it used to be since you can no longer complete multiple chaos sets in short time.
Second, it stops people from only fighting low level content in general when farming rares. They will actually have to fight cruel or merciless content now to get rares that result in some good currency. It was way too easy to farm low levels for the chaos sets, even for non-multiboxers.
How about if all 6 are from the same box, set player level at 1.

For me its the only way to efficiently farm Fusing orbs. Yes Fusing Orbs. Now i will eventually run out of all currency cause i will be unable to buy scrolls of wisdom, and all this because of retarded fusing system.
Seems like GGG dont give a fuck about solo-player at all. Just steam roll game with full party.
Yay.
Still love this game.
Sell un identified rares, they give 5 transmute shards, farm up 10 transmutes and they sell for a stack of wisdoms, you'll never run out of wisdoms again.
I'm doing the same thing for fusings and chance orbs

funny how I'm trying to chance a lionseye glare and now I'll be able to farm up chances way easier than trying to buy them
hopefully we can find an easy one for scourings, maybe somewhere in cruel then I'll really be set and will get a huge boost to my overall rate of getting chance and scourings

Well, this is kind of bullshit, you couldn't come up with a better way to nerf this? I used this recipe all the time, and I don't multi-client. Once again, exploiters ruining the fun for the solo players. Thanks.
I have to agree here. This change hits solo-players very hard. Sure, the recipe was indeed netting too much profit for multiclient users. But for solo-players this was a very reliable way to farm orbs, without being completely over the top. I mean, for a solo-player it was a good alternative to mapping but thanks to multi-client users this alternative seems to be erased. Why not simply state, that multiboxing/multiclients are not allowed, period? No, instead solo-players are affected by nerfs due to "balancing" because of multiclients. Now here is the thing... farming low-lvl content is not only STILL much more efficient with multiple clients but rather provides more an advantage than ever compared with a solo-player, which makes me believe, that we are actually wanted to use multiclient exploiting of the drop-mechanics.
Let me show you why multiclients are at a bigger advantage than ever if the recipes are not usefull anymore for low-lvl rares:
As a solo-player with 150% iir I get 4 rares on average from normal Merveil. That equals around 1.5 Alteration orbs per run. Therefor I have to run Merveil 11 times on average to create the value of 2 Fusings which you can trade in for a Chaos (Vendor rate: 16 Alteration = 8 Jewelers = 2 Fusings) just from vendoring rares.
For each additional player you get +50% iiq, therefor with 5 players you will have +250% iiq. Now with the exact same char as above and 5 additional clients you will not get 4 x 3.5 = 14 rares per run (because iir does not change), but let us rather say like 10 rares on average. This equals roughly 4 Alteration orbs per run, which means you need to run Merveil only 4 times to create the value of 1 Chaos (Vendor rate again).
That means, that to be as effective as a solo-player, a multiclient user had to run Merveil at maximum 2.75 times slower, which is pretty much impossible if the multiclient user is at least trying to save time on his runs. I mean, how long does a Merveil-run take a soloplayer? 2 minutes including loading screen? That means it would be like 4:45 minutes with multiple clients. Does it really take close to 2 minutes just to navigate additional chars through a portal?
That simple calculation did not include the additional profit the multiclient user can generate in the same time as a solo-player by name-matching, through Alchemy shards or any other recipes.
The Chaos recipe could compensate for that because the amount of rings and amuletts did not increase THAT drastically by using multiple clients, but with it being gone, solo-players are put at a severe disadvantage EVEN AT THE EASIEST BOSS IN THE GAME!
This change to the chaos recipe widens the gap between multiclient users and solo-players and that is definitely NOT good.
regards
/edit
Not to speak of the severe disadvantage that poor people have compared to rich ones. The Chaos recipe also worked as a counter to this, because your gear-lvl was pretty much irrelevenat when farming Merveil on Normal. Now, if you have a better geared char and can farm higher lvl content you will get more reward for that compared to a badly geared char that farms lower content. Adding to this, no poor and badly geared player can afford to sell unidentified rares from the highest content he can beat, while rich and good geared players can. Conclusion: The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Widening another gap. NOT GOOD!
Easy way to fix this from GGG is only allow those vendor recipes if people have more than 1 login character from a IP.
..But then again... people would just use proxy's hotspotshield/etc... awww fml

I feel like im shooting myself in the foot here by sharing what I do but here goes .......
I sell all blues, get tons of transmute shards/orbs. I ID all rares with the exception of belts rings and amulets as they are few and far between.
With IDing only rares to sell for alt shards to the vendor plus selling all blues without IDing them not only am I getting a sizeable tab full of alteration orbs, but im stocked with fusings and other currency. I never run out of wisdom scrolls (i sell my stacks of transmute orbs once they start clogging up my tabs), matter of fact im slowly but surely filling up an entire tab with scroll stacks.
Do yourself a favor, get a portal gem and a few high roll andvarius rings and go to town.

if im low on wisdom I'll do both, just load myself up with as much blues and yellows and get my transmutes for wisdom scrolls.
then up my alts to fusings but have been using those to trade so I never really keep a stock of anything
only thing I'm missing is the rings I have all the other MF gear, the low life boots, the gloves, double roll amulet

Yeah, you're right, 100% true as well.
I don't know to be honest for a good fix, but I guess we just have to take it like men :(
