Tencent & Charan
" i ever questioned the theory of lower mtx generating more income because of the higher costs of inhouse support. well, now that the whole customer relationship handling will be taken away from ggg to some indian/chinese call centre it's a quite different situation. it means tencent can make xtra $$$ by selling your gaming habits/profile to insurances/scoring institutes which should at least be worth 10s of dollars per account with a real life identity attached. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

I cant help but suspect it comes down to the fact, as some have suggested, that they already lost control a long time ago.
The game is a mess of power creep, and they cant even fix half the things they want to fix because theyre literally terrified of the fallout from taking the op toys away from the kids. The lunatics have been running this asylum for years, GGGs creative control has gone from slightly compromised to lost at supporter pack gunpoint. So if you dont have creative control, if the game is now an entity that rules itself beyond anyones ability to truly bend it to their creative will, why not cash out? They still get to develop the game, they still have to do what they have to do to keep it rolling along, theyre still tied down and forced to keep the game on this hardwired railroad its dictating for itself. Only difference is if it all falls apart, they got their payoff in the bank rather than being sunk with the ship. Tencent are now in the same position GGG were in, you continue to bend to the will of the mob or you lose your investment and the game dies. The mob are still the ones rly in control. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

These decisions don't happen overnight. Who knows how long they've been negotiating the terms with Tencent. Also, Chris pretty clearly says that he's never been unwilling to sell GGG, just that any buyers they've been contacted by haven't been a good fit for them.
Tencent won't do anything to PoE (outside of China) except pour money into it. GGG will lose income from those who supported the company itself, but realistically, how high do their numbers go? 50? 100? Looking at the big picture it'll be a ~10% income drop spike at most, and with the resources they get from Tencent it's easier to make PoE a game that'll be more and more popular with masses. What's better is that with Tencent's resources they can now risk losing the support from the most fervent GGG fans and truly go for casualization of the game, the true Path of $$$. Moral of the story: those who supported GGG as a company got screwed over big time. The rest probably won't care nor feel anything different. |

" Just like how they got screwed over when Xbox was released and screamed about casuals ruining the game's development? With how volatile things seem to be, with every change dissected under an electron microscope with shrieks about how the game got ruined again, maybe some 50 times per change with every patch, I think it's time to put a temporary halt to that. You people think that pennies fall from heaven when you keep demanding x, y, and z from the devs, but the thing is all those things take time and money to develop. Finance these days seems to be drying up somewhat, considering the amount of backlash a number of recent changes have generated. Do I agree that some of it was justified, at least partly? yes. I'm not that much of a white knight to blindly agree with every decision GGG makes. But I'm also pragmatic enough to understand that the till has to remain filled, because big updates need big $$$. 1337 21gn17ur3

" if they ever cared for their high value supporters they wouldn't have gone rampage on their status symbols in that "everything for 50%"-black friday sale. chris later even joked about the small number of people who ever bought that ligtning scorpion full price. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

" But here's the thing: they weren't in a position to completely ignore them and their money. Now they are. |

" it makes me wonder about the mtx release binge we saw recently. Was this them trying to buff the value of their company through profits as much as possible leading up to it? A last ditch attempt to raise a certain amount of money needed to avoid selling off? A proof of profit potential example to show off to tencent? Was this in the pipe before the beastleague backlash? Was it partly cause by it? I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

The game is so far from anything it started as it hasn't felt like POE to me for years. I think its easy to forget that myself and others first played this game over 7 years ago now.
It was a brutal, cold and slow game back then which actually required a bit of skill and thought. Nowadays you're lucky if you even see what it is you're killing because everything is already dead off screen or soon to be, while you run around with multiple icons above your head in a daze of micro transactions. The popular opinion was that faster was better, most people playing the game do it for loot so it stands to reason they would design the game around that and sacrifice some of their vision. No one but Chris can talk for him of course but as my name is Chris I feel suitable replacement :-P 4.0 2020 is interesting to me, that'll be 10 years since the first people played the game outside of the devs. 10 years ironically enough was always the go to figure of support for POE. I'd wager this buy out and the obvious increase in development funds(not Chris's wallet) from Tencent will help GGG deliver a vision for 2020 that will allow Chris and those following him to move onto the next project, while GGG sells up the remaining shares. I don't see anything changing until then, I am however fully expecting POE to bring out some mild pay to win features after 2020 though. It should be interesting to see what happens |
