Yes, death penalty should be reduced, but not removed. It's not 7,5% or 15% that makes you lose xp but this bonus penalty...

@ All those spamming "Your build is bad"... Isn't this a game where everyone can and should use any skill they want and make their own build where only imagination is the limit?!? If you want to make only 1 win build per class go play Diablo 3...
That's one of the reasons why death penalty should be lowered...
I'm not sure you fully understood the wiki page you linked. The only penalty that page shows is the penalty that applies for killing underleveled mobs, which is a pretty standard penalty for games of this nature. The only reason you should be farming underleveled mobs is that you've got bad gear or a bad build for even leveled mobs. If you're farming underleveled mobs (so that you're getting a penalty to the xp you're gaining) and you're *still* dying, then you're in pretty bad shape on your character for one reason or another.
*edit* Herp derp on my part, although I will argue their chart is kinda crappy. :-P

If we were to nerf this penalty, hardcore players would start looking down on default is my assumption.

They already look down on default players as a general rule of thumb. However, speaking as someone who has yet to play anything other than default in this game, I don't want the death penalties changed/removed. They're fine just like they are and keep me from just blinding rushing and dpsing and dying and rinsing and repeating.

Punishing for a bad build would be understandable, if there were at least a 'real' form of respeccing in the game. Nothing demoralizes a person worse, than finding out at level 50+ that they screwed their character to hell with no real way of fixing it. Rerolling over and over might be fine for HC players, but people chose Default league for a reason. Losing time isn't something Default players want, that's why they chose it in the first place. If people don't understand that, I really don't know what else to say.
Hello from a Default player who enjoys making decisions with a consequence.
I can't act like I speak for the whole Default crowd, that's true.
I've made 6 characters since I started playing open beta. This was about 2 weeks ago. Some because I wanted to try different characters, some because the choices I made weren't the 'right' ones. When first starting the game, the skill tree is all but overwhelming. You're almost guaranteed to screw up your first character with the way the skill system is set up. Depending on how long it takes you figure out how the game works, you might be so far screwed up that your only option is to delete and reroll.
What I'm saying, is some people just simply won't find much fun in deleting weeks of time, just because they didn't know anything about the game when they first started playing. Now, I know quite a lot about building characters, and if a proposed build is going to work or not, but I definitely didn't when I first started.
Having said that, I believe I got off topic. Having consequences for the choices you make is fine. Losing hours of time, just because you hit a bad lag-spike, isn't. Punishing a player for dying is one thing, but to simply erase hours of effort is too much. Losing exp upon death just isn't a very fair way to punish Default players for dying. I feel like I'm playing a F2P Korean MMO when I lose exp to a death.

B-but hardcore is even easier, you just alt+f4 and don't lose anything, in default everything oneshots me because of my CRAZY DOMAGE BUILD. Hardcore is for noobs who play pussystyle!

I Lol'd.
Seriously though, HC is just more for people who are fine with farming content that's 10 levels below them before they progress. Hardcore is just full of people not willing to take a risk, because a death means "Game Over". You can argue that playing HC is a risk in itself, but I'm pretty sure anyone can farm The Ledge until they're level 20.
Hardcore isn't about being super-awesome-pro. It's about taking 0 risks, building your character tanky as hell, farming content well under your comfort-level, and insta-closing the game if you get cornered. Watch Kripp's stream, you'll hear "I was about to leave the game right there." like 20 times an hour.

It's been stated that GGG wants reaching lvl 100 to be considered quite the accomplishment and be very difficult to do so. You don't lose any wealth you found in those 'wasted hours' and perhaps you learned something from said death that can be applied to your next encounter with a similar situation.
Another thing to remember is that saying deaths from any derivative of "lag" warrant a change in a game system is really a silly thing. Plenty of players are able to play without experiencing this game breaking lag so many speak of, and have adapted to the desync issues so as to mitigate deaths from it for now.

Or you'll simply have to start back at ground-zero when you find out that 2k Life isn't enough to do Merciless successfully.

Yes, that is the simple and correct solution to that particular issue, if 2k HP indeed is too low for your play style. That is working as intended per GGG.

I'd have to say their intentions aren't in the better interest of the unknowledgeable player, then. Not fun for a new player, indeed. Wasn't for me, I just happened to enjoy the game enough to not quit over it.
