The problem isn't life vs ES which is just a numbers game, but armor and evasion vs ES, ES with CI basically has 0 drawbacks, sure you can't use flasks for healing but that's pretty useless most of the time anyway, while both armor and evasion have glaring holes in their mechanics that can't be fixed with a keystone.
ES also takes less investment on the tree and into gear, with CI you have 3 prefixes you want and 3 suffixes you want most armor pieces (yes you want MS on boots but mostly), while life builds using armor or evasion as mitigation what 4 prefixes and 4 suffixes. On the tree it's a similar story, for ES you want ES nodes, for life you want life nodes and you want armor/ev nodes to get your mitigation. Mechanically ES also mechanically is just better when you consider that it has 3 keystones that remove all of it's drawbacks. While ES is just pure mitigation, armor and evasion have downsides that can't be compensated for. Armor takes a penalty vs big hits making it useless against getting one shot, and does nothing against elemental damage. Evasion on the other hand does nothing against spells, and has an all or nothing approach which makes it so sometimes you're just going to take a big hit and die. Energy shield on the other hand will mitigate physical attacks, elemental attacks, and spells equally, and has keystones to remove the drawbacks of no leech, regeneration, and being bypassed by chaos damage, which effectively make it just better. So while it seems ES was initially intended to be a choice between more mitigation or a larger health pool, it's now a choice between trivial mitigation and smaller health pool, or no mitigation and a larger pool, which makes the choice simple. I would think the solution to make armor competitive would be something like making it also mitigate elemental damage, and removing the diminishing returns on big hits in favor of diminishing returns on area level, and give it some keystones. Evasion is a tougher beast because it seems stylistically flawed, and nothing that could really be deemed evasion would solve its problem of 'sometimes you just get hit and die' but a start would be along the lines of allowing spells to be evaded, also changing the diminishing returns to area level instead of monster stats, and removing the penalty to arrow dancing. |

" Armor does actually work and is useful if you can get it. But then because you get too little life in a regular build you MUST have Kaom's heart. It is a must have for any life build. So you already miss out on like 900-2000 armour extra that you could get from a chest. It's even more terrible if you consider you could've also ran a brass dome which gives 4k armour. The brass dome actually makes it work. In a similar way with shield builds, the armor is actually useful because you get a fuckload from the surrender / lioneye's. The problem with armor generally is it only works really well (also versus big hits) if you stack is ridiculously high. Which requires specific gear like a brass dome or the surrender. But the thing is if you do run a full armor build you end up with like 6-6.5k life. An energy shield build gets to 15k ES or so. So the mitigation you need on your 6-6.5k life build needs to be a whole lot greater than the ES build. But you can't :D. You can't get elemental mitigation any higher. And that is the real issue with the armor vs ES issue. Elemental damage is the same regardless of defense you have. Running armor gear doesn't really give you more % max resistances to mitigate more. So at the moment if you play armor you play a much more squishy character than ES. The thing with life vs ES is, ES is basically 1.5x as good as life. You can nerf all the ES nodes by 15-20% and ES would still be better atm. |

Please stop nerfing and start buffing everything else in the game. Old Cyclone with AOE was great but now it's garbage while most range skills continued to stay awesome. Too many damn nerfs that nobody asked for. Energy Shield is a great example of how end-game scaling should be. Now do the same for life and melee. Stop nerfing amd start buffing.

" This. Remove/pulverize instant leech and I think need remove leech possibility for ES. Show the extra life number from leech. I like to see new life mechanics in future, maybe using mana better than MoM idea (improve?), or more things like blood magic and CI idea (maybe some version for evasion?) but really need fix the actual problems. Also, I can deal with not having the hybrid %armour/stun prefix on a life build. ;) And luckily, there's a bunch of nodes in the tree that provide Armour/Evasion AND life. So it's really not that bad as your trying to make it. There's very few AR/EV nodes in the tree that don't offer something useful on top. Like life, resists, life regen. " Sounds like a stupid idea to me to stack armour % and then wear a Kaom's with 600 armour.
