Death Penalty Adjustment Discussion

Death penalty IS about competitive element. The higher level you get, the better of a player you are, in temp leagues. Std does not matter in that regard, because there is legacy crap going on anyways.

The biggest factor in keeping yourself on the top of the ladder is being able to chain 78s all day, not the death penalty.

Removing the death penalty in Std would make fights meaningless and completely remove the associated risk. Make the game bland and stupid carebear. A very weird suggestion coming from a competitive, hardcore player like yourself. ;p

I'm not competitive or hardcore, lol. I don't have all that much time to even be trying. ;_; I just enjoy the moments of deaths on HC and these "omfg, wtf just happened" kind of thing. But not everyone like those, and quite a few people don't even like dying on softcore.

If you are chaining 78s AND you are dying, you won't get to the top of the ladder. Amarite?
Honestly, many people do not care about "associated risk" - they want the "bland and stupid" keyboard masher. It is not my kind of game (or maybe it would be, from time to time?), but it doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun someone else.

We already have different thing to do, for different players - some people enjoy farming fragments, other go for maps. Some people like farming Piety/Dominus, other people do PvP or whatnot. Std for keyboard mashers would work too, I suppose. :P Give that from what I'm reading, there might be quite a few people enjoying such experience.

I think its a terrible precedence to set by GGG to have different penalties even between standard and the temp sc league. I agree the game has many different playstyles and ways to acquire wealth, but leveling past 90, you said 80, which you can get to without doing maps at all pretty easily. Isn't that necessary, I understand that some people don't want that feeling of losing something, but I JUST got to level 93 yesterday and from 92-93 I died 3 times, atziri pk me once cause I didnt flask apparently, cannot die+reflect from strongbox spawned (which I switched around my flask to make lightning pot one of the earlier ones so reflect is easier to mitigate, goes to show you that the death penalty has some effect, even on higher level characters to adjust my build) and the other one was playing in a party and lagged, which is funny because I play a mjolner discharge build and don't have issues unless I am playing in a party.

So uh whoever said not much can change this discussion very much this line will change it significantly:

"
GGG have been hard at work rewriting Path of Exile’s netcode, and we’re quietly optimistic about the change to desync this will bring.

Just wanna ask: technically, how hard is it to run an extra league with NO death penalty?

Technically probably not that hard.

Adding more leagues was never about the technical difficulty though, it was about unnecessarily splitting up the somewhat limited population of players even further, especially when temp leagues are going on.

if unnecessarily, why does this debate go on for so long (and prolly on and on)? :)

Well you necro'd a fairly dead thread.

Everyone wants different things out of games, it is up to the dev to determine if they should give people what they want. They have to weigh the positives and the negatives of each thing requested to determine if it will have a better overall impact on the game. Splitting up the community typically DOES NOT have a better overall impact in a game that is already pretty small to begin with.

This specific debate of XP penalty goes back from years of adjustments and improvements.

It was reduced in the past from 15>10 for merciless, max level maps were increased (as such leveling became at least somewhat easier), ect.

Along with Act 4 comes lockstep, which isn't going to be optimal for everyone can remove the burden or idea that GGG is at fault for deaths (and therefore xp loss) happening from desync. If you do not have good enough connection or ping to use lockstep and have significant issues with desync, then why do so many other players not have issues? Should the whole game be balanced around the fact that a small portion of players will have issues even after lockstep?

Even if you cannot use lockstep and still use predictive, significant improvements have been made BECAUSE of lockstep being coded, I know I've seen it in beta.

So the fact that the #1 reason or argument that people use to reduced or remove the penalty is being changed is enough to warrant why this debate is fairly pointless to discuss at this time and probably won't be an issue for players after Act 4 hits.

Sorry for the repeated posts.

Frankly speaking and personally, I would like to have a Loser League over an ACT4.

Creating more fancy stuff over a loose foundation is not really that praisable. The concept of a game (entertainment) provider should be addressed first.

Maybe you should share some experiences or details on why you think it should be created other then "i want this" or "its a hot topic, therefore they should do it"

I would say MOST people that request removing or altering the death penalty are ones without experience getting past level 85, I see that isn't an issue for you so I am confused on to why you think it is important to get those last 7 or so skillpoints.
