What's wrong with this? He knows his item is worth some amount that is obviously much more than 3 chaos.

For example, new league...suppose i find a carcass jack. I know a lot of people are going to want it and I know it has a lot of value. I'm obviously going to see who wants it most and I'm not going to entertain no 3 chaos offers.
Most of my items have a b/o but for the few that don't I've got a pretty wide range of what I'd be willing to accept so when I reply with "What's your offer? / How much can you afford to spend on it ?" to someone that wants to buy, something like a Tabula (~ 1 ex) I'd be fine with anything from 20 - 40 fusings or a similar rate in other orbs.

It's not me gunning for 5 ex offers on a 1 ex item, it's because I don't mind selling items for less if the player doesn't have that much.

As for the players that reply with "No, bye / ignored" or any other rude message like that, they're not worth you're time.

I ask people for offer if the item I'm selling is something that there are only a few available on .xyz, usually rares 1ex-10ex rares. This is 80% so I can exploit them if they value the item more than I do, and 20% because I don't really know how much I want. It helps because you're often one of few people with that particular rare item type available for sale.

When I'm buying gear that doesn't have a B/O posted, I like to make an offer instead of asking for price. Typically I will say 70% of the max that I'm willing to pay, and often it gets accepted. People don't like haggling.

When it comes to uniques and rares <= 20c, I try to set b/os and only entertain people who offer me my b/o or something close to it. I always accept alternative currency. Never understood people who say "only want exalts" or "I don't want 5 regals, give me 5 chaos".

Him: lol serious? I want orbs
Me: cool, how many of what?
Him: like 10 chaos?
Me: oh I was thinking of doing 160 alts, is that cool?
Him: ya sure I could use the alts

Works 90% of the time, also you can go even lower by converting to a lower alteration ratio. Everyone needs alterations. :)

to bad 10chaos is actualy 160alts

(poe.xyz has) just plain idiots (like posting their entire characters current gear on trade forum to show off, not planning to sell it)
(first set of parentheses mine)

This, so much. Why in the crispy shit does poe.xyz count mirrors as the lowest currency, such that items listed for mirrors show up at the top of the list when you're searching by lowest price, and you can't exclude them with a maximum b/o?
There are two sides to every coin. Buyer wants to get the best price, seller wants to get the best offer.

Nothing to see here other than normal haggling. One alternative is the 'care sales approach' where every item has a price higher than what the seller wants to give room for haggling into a range that the seller is willing to accept. Or [insert another scenario that has equal downside for one party here]. You get the point.

There is really nothing to see here because nothing is broken....except just about every person you'll ever meet :)

Thanks for all the fish!

Hello fellow exiles.

That is all the pleasantry I have in me atm, on to this tiny rant thread...

I have played PoE off and on since closed beta and have enjoyed it very much.
That said, I admit I am partially ignorant on what the going rates are for items
and how much they are worth. Even though I only trade a small amount of the time,
I love having the option to trade with other players.

What sucks though is this is how my trade chat has been mostly since I have come back:

Me: How much for that ring bud?
Douche: Offer?
Me: 1ex
Douche: Too low, bye

Well if you have an arbitrary number in your head that you want, just tell me
WTF you want to sell it for, and I will either buy it or tell you all that I
can offer!!!! I can only imagine that this happens because the seller wants 3ex,
but is hoping someone will "offer" 5ex?!?! I don't know...

I lurk the forums, and I know I have seen this type of thread from well over a year
ago, so I know this is nothing new, but I just want to come here and "argggggg".

What do you buyers do when faced with the above scenario? Any tips? Just
stick to buyouts only? I ask, because I have never gone to a store, yard sale, anywhere
and had the seller tell me "offer", so I'm at a loss.

No man, thats game mechanics. Today I sow man bought mirror for 14ex. There is no option in game to put item on market. Putting buyouts for xyz is boring and Im one of "douches" but will try to explain why. U ask for "Agony spiral ring", I have no idea what is that and im not playing game to sit in town and w8 ppl to buy things. So, Im in full party map and in 90% I will not answer at all, party will gone if I chat bout ring. After that map new map is up ... in how much ... 30sec? In that time I need to go to stash, find ring, negotiate for how much? 5c ... 10c ... 1ex? Not worth man :D. Im getting 2c from vendoring one map loot. And what if I have 200 items? Chating with ppl 90% of playtime? No. I ask offer, if its under 2-3ex I say too low. Yep, I will not sell it maybe but really, I dont need currency that much. So, u asked bout "Douches". Better ask why GGG didnt make shop system where ppl can put buyout on items or make auction for example 2 days and best bet wins. Why u need to alt tab xyz and u dont have ingame search system? That system would be best update ever.

So you do maps while staying online at XYZ to sell items that you don't even know the stats of anymore and if someone offers < 2- 3ex you say "too low" without knowing what item the player wants?

Spoiler
Pretty sure you just named and shamed yourself there...
