I'm Unhappy I Put As Much Money As I Did In This Game

I've tried to get my head around the point of this thread... Seems everyone is unhappy with drop rates (too few real good items), crafting (hard to get real good rolls) and trading (because of reasons). I am assuming you're asking for more good loot in less time, and crafting where you only spend a fractional amount of currency.

I consider myself a casual player, with more or less 1-2 hours daily. I levelled my last char to 86 and did a shitlaod of maps. Found some good stuff. Sold most of it. Had.. decent gear, but never played enough to get that truly great stuff.
Thing is, I think it is the way it should be. As a casual gamer, I don't expect to be running around with a BoR and a Soultaker just because those really devoted gamers are. If you were sure to see those drop in every single game... what is the point even striving for them? Where is the challenge? I was realy happy when I found a near perfect pair of Maligaro's gloves early in the season. If they were sure to drop, the joy of finding them would be much less.

Actually, I like the idea of having nearly unobtainable items. I just wanna be able to make a good build and have fun playing the game without them. For me, it's the hard struggle, and the occasional reward that is what keeps me going. I just put my shades on and deal with it. 8)

That's the thing, the challenge in games like these (party-optional PvE games) should be what YOU make of it. If I want to grind to 100, I can set that as my challenge. If I want to sit there and roll alts because I want to try new builds and skills, that should be my challenge. Those can be challenges because the game is fun, repeatable, and has a long shelf life based on GAMEPLAY.

The challenge should NOT be trying to create artificial difficulty simply from tweaking numbers. The game should not tell me that I need to spend months grinding and trading because I want to finish just one character with endgame gear.

If the developers have no faith that people will keep playing their game if they can gear out one character, then they have no faith that they produced a good, fun game. It's obvious they do not because they keep gating the game behind more and more RNG as more people try this game and give up on it. It's the same cycle when a restaurant starts losing business. They often try to cut costs by cutting back on portion sizes, but cutting back on portion sizes makes people less willing to go there and they're stuck in a cycle.

GGG needs to start having faith that people will play the game for the game, and not for the mindnumbing grind of acquiring usable gear.

People really need to stop whining about getting one shot in hardcore, go play some ambush while you wait for balancing..

And focus on the real issues, the issues that has been a plague on POE since the get go, and GGG since to refuse to fix..

Desync, i am sorry GGG but this is alpha omega, you cannot make a game where you continuosly nerf survivability because "you want us to avoid dmg rather than tank it" and not fix Desync.

I know when you test stuff on your zero desyncing, zero lag test servers things might seem nice and all, but on the real servers it is downright impossible to dodge half the abilities.

Combined with the new shoddy targetting bugs that basic makes your character throw totems, traps wherever it pleases, really takes away from emersion and actual control of your Character.

Either you make this game easy, or you fix desync, it is the only 2 choices you have. It is'nt right that such a huge percentage of HC deaths is due to Desync, it is insane. I mean half of all the streamers deaths are desync related, that ofcourse is my estimate but still.. Pohx was talking about only ever dying 3 times on HC 1 due to desync, 1 due to BSOD and for the first time, he actually died because he made a mistake.

There has been people on reddit and the like who knows alot about game engine design and game design in general who has made their input on the subject, and put it out there , that this amount of desyncing is avoidable if the will was there.

Either you allow us to play in small local hosted instances, or you fix the system you have now, or you start reverting some of the survivability nerfs we have been seeing..

The latest HP nerf is horrible.

best post of the day.
IGN: ShadowBeholder
I do not have the desire or time to write a very long and argumented post - not that if I did GGG would take it into account. I have many many hours played in this game and all I can say is open beta - awesome best game I have played ever, full game - bad started losing interest after all nerfs and ridiculous balance changes, SoTV - horrible did not even want to get back after it was released. GGG please bring the old game we all loved and played! Also as a side note I had almost no problem with desync so I imagine how people who desync non-stop would feel about the situation... :((((((((((((((((

I don't have forum titles. I don't have pets. I don't have a lot of other things.

What I do have, is an account for myself, and an account for my son. We have ~50 stash tabs between us, a few armor skin transfers, and a few spell effect mxt's. All told, I've spent about $150 bucks on the game for the two of us to play.

And I echo the sentiments of those who have spent more, and feel unhappy. My son, has all but stopped playing. He did so right around launch. He just got frustrated with the way things were working for his playstyle.

And I'm getting to that point. Now, I will say, that some of my unhappiness, is based on aRPG style as a whole, and not just POE.

RNG:
There is far too much RNG for me to feel like the game can be played 100% self found.

The very fact that these gloves can exist is a failing of a system IMO. These gloves are ilvl60+ Wool Gloves. I'm fairly confident that they were 66+, from a boss in a map, but I don't remember. I've held onto them for so long, staring at them, hating them. Why, I lost out on a possible upgrade to my character, so that the very base model of ES gloves could drop from my boss, is just beyond me. If we are going to see caps on things like Monster must be level X to see a Koam's, Shav's, Voltaxic, etc... There should be a cap on things like this. level 60+ monsters should not be dropping crap that you pick up in the very first zone of the game. Especially not as a rare.

I've heard it before "But what about the uniques!?!?!?!?!?!?" FIne. Let them drop them as uniques. I don't care. But, there is no joy, no fullfillment, from looting a level 1 pair of rare ES gloves from a Merciless Boss. That's crap.

But, the RNG doesn't just stop at loot drops. It's in the "crafting" system. Which, is not a crafting system. Vendor Recipes, is as close to crafting as this gets. Everything else, is a giant slot machine, that you put various values of currency into, spin the handle, and hope that you don't screw up.

I recently posted about an ilvl 77 Vaal Regalia that I spent 2k Fusings trying to 6L, before I vendored it, and deleted the character. That's not fun. That wasn't fun. I didn't vendor something I spent time to get, because I was having fun. I was pissed. ANd the only way I was going to stop being pissed, was to get rid of the item, and the character. Vendoring + Delete was the (albeit extreme) way to deal with stopping myself from doing something that wasn't fun.

And then, If I would have got the thing 6L'd? Well.... Then I get to spend lord knows how many alts to get rolls, and then eternal, and regal, and nope, that didn't work, restore the imprint, and re-eternal, and regal, and on and on and on and on and on.

That isn't fun. The shear amount of RNG invovled in even getting a USABLE piece, like.....

That's not a bad piece. It's not amazing though. It's tri-resist, but not top tier rolls. It's got "some" bonus ES to it, but certainly not "a lot". It's a very mediocre to "ok" piece. But the RNG? Let's not talk about how hard I tried to make something good out of it, only to get mediocrity.

The Patch 1.1 Passive skill tree.
This is my personal opinion. It's the worst skill tree that's been pushed since I started playing the game. It highlights several problems.

1.) There is no "value system" in determining what you get for a passive point. Or, conversely, if there is a value system, the values are woefully skewed, at least from this side of the looking glass. You can easily verify this, by taking a look at the marauder, scion, and ranger starting area. You get, vastly differing values from a single passive point, in regards to life, based solely on where you are.

The marauder gets 6% HP, and 6% armor.
The Scion is offered, just 6% HP,
The Ranger, offered 6% Eva, and just 4% Health.

This is exacerbated further when you look at other classes starting areas, and their life offerings.

2.) There is a problem with balance between weapon choices. When the decision was announced that there was going to be a rework in the passives in the marauder area, and the area below them, next to duelist, I thought that it was going to be to address some of the imbalances regarding weapon specializations. In Domination, Swords ruled the roost in terms of quality passives to invest, as well as number. Maces, were less represented, but had solid nodes, due to the the inclusion of a cluster that included life, as well as 2 clusters that included armor. While there were less nodes, they were, from a DPS / Survivability standpoint, a good 2nd choice. Axes, were third and Staves... WEll... I don't think much of the staff clusters to put it politely.

I thought, that the rework of the lower area, would be to balance them out. Unfortunately, what we have seen, is that the pecking order, has been further defined. Swords, rule the roost. They have tons of good, quality nodes, ranging from the Marauder area, all the way over to the Shadow area. Swords are every where, and the nodes, are generally high quality.

The one node, that offered Mace + Life is gone, kicked to the curb, in favor of a dual mace / staff cluster, which, while offering superior damage, offers nothing in terms of the life / damage nodes. Axes, got a slight buff, as they were integrated with Swords nodes, in a spot or two, meaning that the pecking order is now,

Swords - by a large, clear margin
Axes
Maces
Staves.

3.) The Scion area nerf. While it's understandable that something needed to be done to the scion area, gutting it's passive quality just didn't cut it, on top of reducing nodes. While a case can be made that they are still "the best" clusters, it comes in terms of density, not quality.

4.) Elemental Weapon Damage builds. It's a pet peeve of mine, probably because my son stopped playing the game. If you wanted to play "Elemental Melee" you really have a dearth of options. There are woefully few nodes that are weapon elemental damage nodes. There are 2 spots in the tree that offer elemental damage as a blanket effect, but it's still hard to craft a tree for someone who wanted to play an ele weapon build, and have a good time in doing so.

5.) Iron Reflexes + Grace. We saw, in terms of the 1 week league, that this was, an incredibly popular combination. My problem with this combination, is that in general terms, one keystone, makes another defensive stat better at being armor, than armor is at being armor.

Now, I'm not saying armor is amazing. Because when you need it most, it still doesn't matter unless you have the granite to couple with it. But, when you look at CI, and Acrobatics, the two nodes that are most similar in function to IR, the other two both have tangible side effects of the choice. This is not the case with Iron Reflexes. There is no tangible side effect to it. You can't evade enemy attacks, is not a tangible side effect comapred on the options that are presented to you by taking the keystone.

Patch 1.1 - Corrupted areas.
My first encounter with a corrupted area post 1.1 was in Ambush League, right after killing Fire Fury. I was, to quote a famous bad guy from another MMO style game, "Not Prepared". There are legitimate balance issues present within these zones. While I understand that they should be more difficult than the zone they spawn in, the level of difficulty of these bosses does not scale proportionately with level, and zone difficulty.

Patch 1.1 - Vaal Gems
They just... Well... the implementation is just lackluster. I have toyed around with several of them that I have found, trying to figure out what is, and isn't interesting. Vaal Double Strike? Pretty cool. Vaal Molten Shell? Again, pretty cool. Vaal Ground Slam? Meh. Vaal Lightning Warp? No. They are just so random, that they boggle the mind on if they are good or not.

I am the Guild Leader of <Lurkers> I have been running the POE related news on our guild site since release of the game, and I just can't bring myself to do a news post about the patch. It's my perception of the changes that is keeping me from it. Normally, I link the patch notes, give some commentary, talk about the cool features, talk about the uniques.

But I just can't bring myself to do it with 1.1 The patch has been, a monumental letdown to me, as an individual. While I think that Ambush is a very interesting idea, I have no cool "OMG that loot box was amazing!" stories. I have no "oh man! that was an epic corrupted area!" story. I have no "This change to the passive tree made sense" commentary to give.

And it's hurting my desire to continue to play the game. I dealt with the RNG of a lot of thins in game, and kept buying stash tabs, because there were definitely parts of the game that I found truly enjoyable. I was enjoying the prospect of having my first level 90 character. I was enjoying the prospect of running higher level maps. I was enjoying the prospect of messing around in the new league. But all of that, has taken a back seat, to the patch, and the changes that have accompanied it, that have made the game less enjoyable for me.

I'm glad that I didn't purchase any supporter packs at this point. I'm glad that I didn't end up with tangible merchandise, or a soundtrack. Because at this point, I'm not sure if I'm going to continue for much longer. The game has just become less enjoyable since the patch, and I'm just not sure if that lack of enjoyment, coupled with the RNG that I already didn't care for, are overshadowed by the fun that I "can" have in game.

I've been waiting for a long time to make my 2000th post (been just observing the forums / patch notes / reddit etc while deciding "when to post it")... Now is the time.

Shoju (and many others in the this thread) have accurately explained the MAJOR problems (especially Shoju) that now exist in Path of Exile.

In CB, other than desync, most of these issues didn't ruin the "fun ppl had", if anything it made it a more enjoyable experience. What am I referring to... well RNG, loot/crafting and especially the trading simulator fiasco that PoE has become.

Most of the necessary points have made/described in this thread. However I would like to add another view, or better put a different way of describing the issue(s), in hopes that GGG can understand (because it's quite clear they haven't figured it out since late OB/release....

*NOTE* below is my opinion and may differ from yours, it's my feedback, if you don't agree that's okay, but if you respond to it, please do so in a manner befitting an adult and in a manner that helps GGG see "your opinion" not just an attack on mine ty)

Here goes:

Less is more............. that's it that's all, it's quite simple.

- Less RNG, will lead to more fun had by the population, thus more $$$ given to GGG (overall)

- Less crafting BS (no better word for it) will lead to... (see above)

- Less "NEED" for trading, will lead to... (again, see above)

- Less "worthless items" (see gloves in Shoju's post/quote and include about 1/2 of the uniques currently in the game) will lead to less disappointment and then lead to (see above).

- A lesser exp penalty (I never complained about this, and won't start because it didn't bother me... but tons of other people have found this to be a "significant" issue and it WON'T "break" the game to change it)...

... since GGG refuses to fix desync (something about their vision for the game or a simple lack of understanding physics (i.e. small bridges, doorways, needless obstacles...remove 1/2 of them <-- trust me will help...that "rock" or that "tree" etc. isn't making PoE the greatest ARPG to have ever existed)

^^^ the above only helps "part" of the desync issue...the other part cannot be fixed without completely altering how the game plays and probably cannot be "fixed" just "tuned" (collision mechanics etc.)

- Less garbage skill gems. Remember "phase run"? You removed it... we moved on. Guess what? you have about 15-20 other skills you can just remove and most of us won't care at all... FIX THEM and bring them back. having them as quest rewards... even though they're still complete garbage is a waste...

- Speaking of quest rewards... again complete retool is needed (ask Charan about the shadow rewards and his Arc build...), but that's something I might address another time.

- Less skill nodes in the passive tree (be honest GGG there's at least 20% of them that are taken less than 1-2% of the time...get rid of them or replace them with nodes people actually want)

- Less...actually make it NO more legacy items, and remove those that exist now (especially with PvP becoming more of a "current" item on your to-do-list)

- Taking a break from this post for the moment, might add/edit later

This post is not intended to incite a flame war.. I actually won't bother replying to anyone who "white knight's" it etc. IT IS FEEDBACK for GGG. Nothing more, nothing less.

Ty for those that read it. And to be clear. I donated for both the success of GGG and PoE, and I don't regret it. I didn't buy a supporter pack during release because I didn't like what I saw. I won't be buying a supporter pack for this expansion (same reasons).

I still wish the best for GGG and hope they can FIX the problems with this game before ppl stop funding them as much as they have, but it will be their call. The negative feedback is not diminishing, it's increasing, and it's starting to affect their most ardent supporters. I hope "this time" they're paying attention (to all of us, from simple player to high end supporter).

Josephoenix
bring this post up!!! :)
Good read. I have a similar experience as you, though my support dollars will take years to work off. I love this game, I can have fun playing it still. The catch is, I cannot have fun playing it past level 85, and I get bored with low level characters quickly. Can anyone guess why?

Desync. This issue is DESTROYING endgame for me personally (your exp may differ). And after all this time, I see no improvements to this ongoing problem (though I am confident they are working on it). I supported this game on the assumption that desync would be crushed with extreme prejudice! And here we are, still dealing with one-shot boss mechanics and our characters being in a different place than our clients say, causing bullshit deaths, but hey we have some shiny new content.

I don't blame anyone but me for spending so much in support of a great game. I just begin to regret it, as the OP does, due to a feeling that my support is being spent in areas that I currently don't give 2 shits about. There is already a solid year of replay value for me in the grind to level 100 alone! I don't need new content every 4 months right now, I need a game that does not punish your progress due to being out of sync with the game server.

Lesson learned I guess. Sorry for the rant, had a bad day. Those of you still enjoying this game, I am super jealous.

Yikes, especially for a free to play game.

Anyways, just hopping in here and saying I absolutely love the new invasion league. The thrill of playing a league that seems significantly different then the rest, not just HC 3.0. I was extremely impressed, it broke my Standard shell, the chains. My friends and I play invasion solely now, since progression actually has meaning...surviving instead of loot is ample reward in this league. Again, great work.

Cannot wait for Cutthroat Leagues, super pumped. I really feel this is what PoE needs, more diversity in leagues. I see invasion as survival progression, ambush lewts, and Cutthroat PvP. That diversity really keeps the game interesting, especially when these are opt in leagues and not static changes to existing leagues. Again, great work.

Stick to your design philosophy. Do not be swayed by vocal minorities. You got this far for a reason, you are doing an amazing job.

To everyone else, one gripe I have in this thread is the entitlement of purchasing supporter packs or coins, and then having a problem with future developments. Shame on them. Obviously they cannot handle spending their own money. This is not investing or gambling. Purchasing coins or supporter packs is not a Dev time share for Fing sake. It is shameful really. No class, no class.

Have you ever designed something? Because let me tell you that the final result always differs from what you had in mind at first. Why? Because you realize it has flaws and so you work/modify it to make it even better.

I think the desync beast is far from being dead and I doubt it will ever be improved. GGG knew it was a risky bet but they decided to stick with it. Good or bad decision? Time will tell but meanwhile they are losing potential supporters.

I've put something like 250$ dollars in the game, the most I have ever give to a game company. Why? Because I saw GGG's team as a mindset reference far from those multinational game companies that just don't give 2 shits about their customers; I really believed that they would listen to our feedback.

Some are hating because they just love to hate.
Some are hating because they care a lot about the game and they see all that potential wasted (my case).

Going back into my cave.

Cheers guys

EDIT:
- Free to play game? Like the ones where you know you will have to buy that micro transaction in order to be comfortable? Bought the max number of guild slots for my mates who couldn't/wouldn't buy stash tabs.
- Minorities? What? Do you have factual numbers?
