Care to elaborate? Why is this a problem?
Because with current drop rates, the only way to obtain 50 exalts in less than 5 years of play for a very lucky player is to trade and not grind.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there is a method out there to reward people who grind more than they trade, because trading intrinsically tends to maximize economic efficiency.
This makes absolutely no sense
grind = items, items = trade, trade = exalts, so in the end grinding = exalts
The more you grind, the more items you will have to trade, the more items you trade the more exalts you have o.O
I don't see any flaw here, in the end the player that plays the most time has the most wealth

There are people with that many exalted on Domination!! :O
wow
I just cleared the 6ex-ish mark a week or so ago, and it was only because I have gotten REALLY lucky on exalt drops. 3 so far.
I've had 1 (one) exalted orb drop since OB.

How about increasing the orb and item drop rate together to the point, where trading isn't that much faster solution for accumulating wealth?

grind = items, items = trade, trade = exalts, so in the end grinding = exalts
massive botting = more exalts = inflated price
valuable unique map only = less drop = may result to nothing to trade / inflated price
=> legit players out of the game economy.

In all my years of playing D2 Ladder, I found one Pul Rune on my own. My bots found 4 (el oh el), and I traded for the rest. Self-found wasn't viable in D2 if you're looking for full best-in-slot gear across all your characters, just as it isn't viable in PoE. But here's the secret: you don't need best-in-slot gear to succeed in this game. But you do need a bit of skill, which is something that gets forgotten more and more in this generation of gamers. People that are used to auto-saves and checkpoints every 25 seconds really get annoying when they try playing a real game, especially when they don't want to admit they suck at it after fifteen levels.
Can i merry you? finally someone that thinks in my same way
But meh, we're in the new gamer generation!!! we WANT brainless games!!! we want moar D3 like!!!
SO. SAD

Doesn't much matter. You could reliably farm torches and sell them for high runes. I've yet to find an equivalent here. I was able to use those proceeds to equip and try out various builds on various alts. Here? GL with that, it's not happening. There's nothing but extreme luck or trading in a poorly implemented system once you reach "end-game" in PoE, which means there's no consistent path to advancement that involves actually playing the game. Dealing with the less that brilliant populace of this game does not qualify as playing the game.
You can't reliably farm blue items and sell the shards/orbs of alteration to vendors and ultimately get Orbs of Alchemy? Run a full clear of a lvl 59 zone with about 15% IIR, sell all the blues and tell me currency is hard to come by.
How did we get from farming high runes to farming El runes?

The solution would be a trading independent balancing scheme that would incentivise playing much more and make trading ABSOLUTELY optional. It might also solve the problem of crafting being such a pain in the ass and we could all have more orbs to waste.
But this game is centered around the economy and not the other way around.
The game should be balanced as if trading was not possible and let the economy adapt to it. If it breaks, fuck it at least you'll have a nice game with a broken economy instead of a nice economy in a fucked up game.

You're close to being correct. Only we're selling blue quality gear for El runes instead of gold, and it takes a LOT fewer of them to get to a Pul.
Look, man. Video games are hard, okay?

People are farming lvl 70+ maps playing purely self-found. Trading is a shortcut to getting better gear, but not a complete replacement as you're suggesting it is. You can do it if you're willing to accept you'll never have the single best piece of gear for any slot.
Unfortunately, a lot of people playing this game are ex-MMO players, and are so used to min/maxing via BiS gear that they almost cannot function without it.
