The game is listed as beta, so there is no where for the development cycle to go. Now it will just linger in "beta" for XX Months/years.

It's in closed beta. Open beta isn't even scheduled until the beginning of 2012. The final release is later in 2012. Considering it's got about a year left in development I would say there is a lot that can change. Also, your complaints aren't really valid because, by your own admission, you don't like many of the core aspects of an arpg...

Not to mention that some of what he dislikes has been changed on other games to cater to casual/newbies. *cough*Skilltreez*Cough*
Give it some time. Content often comes last, after the core game mechanics.
If you're bored with the game, I, or any other forum user for that matter, would gladly play your account for you :P
I skimmed through this after reading the first page, but one thing I wanted to note:

You quoted the definition of "beta test" as a way to show this game isn't ready for a beta. You failed in that comparison, because it fits exactly into the definition you quoted.

Second level, external pilot-test of a product (usually a software) before commercial quantity production. At the beta test stage, the product has already passed through the first-level, internal pilot-test (alpha test) and glaring defects have been removed. But (since the product may still have some minor problems that require user participation) it is released to selected customers for testing under normal, everyday conditions of use to spot the remaining flaws.

And on another note, your brother agreed not to share his account when he chose to participate in the beta ;)
Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus.
First in the credits!

Diablo 2 is indeed not a perfect game. But it did give gamers hundreds of hours of fun. That to me is Priceless.

If not thousands. I actually feel like I may go re-install it for a bit of a romp tonight.

Not really, you cant sell items, you cant pvp, the passive skill tree is filled with temp icons, the bosses don't have animations or special abilities, the regular monsters are bland, grouping is not setup, its a alpha at best. The pure definition of beta usually means that code is locked down and only minor bug fixes are being worked in.

This game is missing tons of content...

So a game that is still 5-6 months away from an open beta still has a good deal of content not included or ironed out.

I think your expectations of a closed beta are more criticisms for a game that would be in an open beta. I've participated in a few closed beta games, and it's about on par with what I've seen. It would be different if we were in a closed beta about to see the open beta come out, and the final release is within a few months. But it's a closed beta that is still isn't scheduled to be a final release for a year.

Look at battlefield 3. It has a year before final release, and it's recent iteration we saw was VERY VERY low on content. It looked good, but there wasn't a hell of a lot to it. Granted it has a lot of resources to put towards development through a year, but PoE is much closer, and has a LOT more core elements in place. Hell a lot has changed between the last two recent versions!
