A disturbing trend (Games are supposed to be hard)
It's kinda to do with two mentalities here, and money. People beat a game, right. They feel good about it. They want to recommend it, sing praises to the sky. More people will buy, but if it's a tricky game they might not want to. It's a lot of effort to beat those games. So a developer makes a game easier, more people play it because they can do better at it and feel good about it. And that's a thing.
But then you get the more painful side of gaming. Usually in games from before gaming really got money behind it, or free indie things. Games like IWBTG, Dwarf Fortress, Super Crate Box. They don't get put out expecting you to beat them. The makers put them out to see who can beat them. They'll never be as famous or profitable as a big game, but they'll usually have a more personal feel. So yeah, I can't speak on PoE. I'm hoping it falls into the category of making me have to improve to beat it, rather than letting me run through it with only the odd random death. My tuppence here! I agree..
However, that fucking spear asshole is waaaayyy OP, impossible to beat when you're playing on a shitty comp haha. Especially if you're just starting the game, I feel there should be a little more leeway on the first playthrough, just so people get the hang of it you know? IGN Suojata

There is, you're free to reroll as much as you like.

FACT: If you think PoE is hard, you ruined your build by being stupid, you dont know what items/mods to value, or you just try to faceroll everything because "it worked in game x". Take a step back and try to use your brains for a change.
Im not a hardcore gamer anymore, but the FIRST time I played hardcore and with my FIRST ever Marauder, I made it to level 73 in one week. I can hardly say this feels hard in any way if you think ahead. I really hate it if they make the game easyer just because someone wants to beat the game without any thought or planning. GGG has said multiple times that the game is for hardcore gamers, so dont cry. |

I'm not crying(yet)...
but spending 4 hours unsuccessfully trying to get to the top of the pyramid as a lv 32 Ranger and getting slaughtered by monsters 6 levels below you...in Normal difficulty...isnt fun at all. Yes I was running, a lot, like a scared little...well you get the idea. Ascension tied to Lab is the worst thing GGG has done...apart from GGG's philosophy on Trading. Oh and Gambling Loot boxes. And selling out to tencent.
I used to love GGG. I supported to ensure GGG remained independent, now I just wish I could get my money back. -_- |

I agree with the OP.
You don't go to a pool game and complain about the defects in the pool table, after all.. those flaws are there for everyone, which makes the game fair, defects or not. If you don't like the defects, then find another table, but to say the game is unfair is ridiculous. Never wrestle with a pig. You'll only get muddy, and the pig likes it!
Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience! "De plumber fixes de sync with de wrench." - Robert_Paulson |

The negative attitude people are displaying in this thread, the "if you dont like it piss off" attitude and the like, are why this game will never be remotely as successful as it has the potential to be.

The problem with a discussion like this is subjectivity. Difficult does not mean the same thing for all.
Most people want the game as difficult as they are comfortable with, or maybe a bit more than that. For each individual, this amount varies greatly. So what's a dev to do? First he has to set a standard for which anything more is considered difficult territory, and anything less is easy territory. Then he has to decide where to tune the game to in relation to this standard. Being at the extreme of either end would be folly. But no matter which way he sets it, some will find it too easy, and some too difficult. At this point, I'd speculate that he has to choose a target audience, and tune the standard for the average of that audience. But honestly, no matter where that setting is, you'll see complainers on both sides. TL;DR - No matter what difficulty the game is set to, you can't please em all. In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding. Last edited by TheSwampDog#0343 on Oct 22, 2012, 3:41:51 PM

Subjectivity is why most games successfully employ optional difficulty settings.

" Personally, this games profit margin is not my priority. My priority is enjoying the game. Meaning I am not jumping up and down to change things to things I don't like to the goal of the game being more profitable. Any game can pull off profitable if they pander hard enough. I'm here for a much more personally tailored style of gameplay, and it provides that in droves. If it get's successful that's great, but I'm not going to compromise anything to increase popularity.
