GGG: You guys used to be good at communicating. Things seem to have taken a dip as of late

Hi

GGG communicates 4/10 on THEIR FORUM but on reddit....WTF!(WHAT THE FUDGE!) IS WRONG WITH YOUR,POE,FORUM THAT MAKES CHRIS USE REDDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use the POE forum for a reason and meanwhile Chris blabs away on reddit feels like he is saying ''f*ck my own website it sucks I'll use reddit. I don't need to read what devoted POE players have to type or inform them of what comes up first before reddit users know.'' Great business strategy to make your own website second fiddle to reddit.

Wow, your response is incredible.

Im sorry i passive-aggressively taunted you in my post, that is childish im so sorry.

I just felt i was being included in that "group" when i had a legit reason.

Its ok ill get over it, the balance is necessary for the long term benefit of the game.

Gawd, they drop us 411's more often than most any other company. You'd have to go to MTG and their daily freakin' newsletter to get more intel.

Obviously they need to hold back news for a big advertising push. There could always be "more communication", but that's a goalpost you can keep moving forward endlessly. Gawd, try to chillax a little.

You can't be excited by what you already know. You can't want what you already have.

Suddenly, with no indication whatsoever, we see a nerf to separate cooldowns on traps which was the only thing making trap-only builds viable. This isn't like the aura-swap issue which was expected by many beforehand. This really took many people by surprise.

No one should have been surprised by this. Redundant support gems on the same skill don't work. And why even have cooldowns if they're just easily bypassed anyway? That's just wasting sockets.

Calling it a "nerf" is disingenuous as well. They'll recharge twice as quickly now. Want to spam traps? Equip Fire Trap, Bear Trap, and whatever new ones get added.

Is it any surprise they'd want dedicated Fire Trap builds to be a little different than it just being a "good" version of Firestorm?

One skill a week

I knew it was an unrealistic goal when it was stated. But let's see how well they did, semantically:

Starting March 7 we had:

Incinerate
Cyclone
Arctic Armour
Melee Splash
Multistrike
Power Charge on Critical
Searing Bond
Minion/Totem Resistance
Increased Burning Damage (<3)
Reave

10/6, around 1.7 gems a month. Almost one every other week. Which is pretty damn good.

I don't expect a tsunami bukkake of skills with the expansion release, but I do expect at least the same couple of them everyone else expects. (Lightning Storm + Orb.)

Player retention

Every game (and by extension, every genre. Man I wish Shoot Them Ups weren't on life support) has a bell shaped population curve. People will leave, people will come back. Game will remain profitable until it isn't.

If you can stand to play Path of Exile 3 hours every day for the rest of your life, you're not human. You're a machine.

quite a bit of angst surfacing in this thread.

didn't mean for this thread to become a venting post for people unhappy with GGG (or for people who are unhappy at the people who are unhappy with GGG. heh.)

merely wanted to point out the following 3 observations in summary:

1. ggg's fantastic communications had taken a dip as of late

2. some of the recent anger points for some players in the community could have been avoided or mitigated if issues were surfaced to the player community earlier. or post release, ggg could have follow up with better clarifications (such as on product placements)

3. this really is ONLY an issue because ggg has always been especially awesome with this regard and is something the player base has gotten used to

hoping to hear a dev's view on the above but i doubt we'll get much here? happy to be proven wrong though! heh.

just wanting to remind everyone, let's keep it chill in this thread yo :)
I honestly don't understand how anyone can say that GGG has a lack of feedback, no offense at the OP - they have weekly patch updates, they respond to those updates, they have numerous responses all over the forums within the last week or so, and they are probably very busy with 'release' fast approaching.

I do agree with the faults you pointed to, but I do not think a lack of communication is one of them. Is it at CB and pre-paid to enter CB levels? Sure. It will never be back to that though, it can't, because by and large real discussions can't be had.

I think I can agree with you. I've been playing for over a year now, and things have taken a dip as of lately. But I think it's only because they're working REALLY hard on making the game full release and working hard on finishing act 3 at the moment, and don't really have much time on their hands.

but how hard is it to dangle a carrot by saying 'we are intending to provide stash open trading on full realease'

or

'endless dungeon mode will be planned on release'

not that hard

Or explain the reasoning behind basically removing trap builds for at least a few weeks.

Hey Witt, no worries we can have different views on that :) Just wanted to make clear that I don't think they're not communicating, just that their usually high standards dropped a little the past few weeks resulting in the issues we saw.

In any case, I may have to take my words back for now. Chris just apologised for the Razer thing on another thread and promised that the Razer thing is as far as they're willing to go.

I'm very happy that he has finally clarified the issue! :D
Yo.

No new development manifesto threads since May.

Dev diaries take quite a while to make... but I'm actually planning on doing one in the very near future about level design and the terrain generation tech.

Yeah, sadly game development isn't really fast-paced enough to warrant super-exciting news every single day. Would you prefer longer, more interesting news at a weekly rate, instead? :P

Yep. Release in October is gonna rock. Trust me.

Reave: I think SOME Of the complaints you're seeing in the forums could have been avoided if you had just stated from the very very start that the AOE was going to be conal.

Hmm, I guess we can change the skill description to reflect the cone-shaped AoE.

RAZER

Yeah, the sad reality of running a small-ish commercial company is that things like this (not necessarily in-game stuff but cross-promotions in general) have a lot of benefits for us. I also think that in-game advertising (even subtle ones) kinda suck but... if you have any better ideas for the future, let us know. We're keen to hear.

Remember that feedback is always appreciated, both positive and negative.

TRAPS and cooldowns

There were some problems with cooldown skills that had to be solved. I know this isn't an ideal fix, but it was the best option we could find. I'm sure people will adapt and find ways to still use skills like Flicker Strike, though.

There is more Trap awesomeness coming, btw. We'll let you know when the time is right. :)

GGG promised that they will frequently add new skills and then a sudden silence started and lasted for quite some time.

Well, we never said that the "one skill per week" thing would last forever...

As it turned out, we totally can churn out one skill per week... but it takes up a lot of our (limited) manpower to do so, and there is a whole lot of other stuff we needed (and still need) to do, too.

Thanks for the reply Rhys!

I may have to take back some of what I originally posted as GGG seems to have gone on an info overload today. Heh. Chris clarifying the Razer issue, Carl coming out with his plans on PVP, and your reply on this. Thanks again to the GGG team for listening to us player :)

I'd like to credit my post with getting you guys all disclosure-y, but that's just me being cheeky as I know that's just not the case. You guys just rock that way. Heh

Very very much looking forward to Rocktober!
