Trying out Duelist/Ranger Life/armour crit melee build

If GGG manages to fix desync melee survivability is fine. At current state you need group or overleveling or godly gear or combination of these to survive desync spike DMG.
I gave it another go but it is actually very hard to build a character I would like.

Basically I would like to play an elemental crit melee.

Previous build:

New build

Changes:
-Iron Reflexes + Increased armor and evasion nodes
-Elemental Equilibrium
-More life nodes
-Less Increased armor nodes
-General Crit chance/multiplier
-General One handed damage, accuracy, attack speed and crit chance/multiplier nodes
-Dropped shield nodes
-Dropped Resolute Technique
-Dropped axe nodes

To address the defense problems with my previous build I've now picked Iron Reflex which should synergy well with Inner Force and Grace.I also picked more life nodes and less armor nodes.
Furthermore I want to use Molten Shell, Determination and Granites to improve damage reduction when needed. Molten Shell will work well in combination with the increased elemental, Lava Lash, Anger and Iron Will.
Finally Warlord's Mark/Enfeeble, Vitality and life regen passives/gear need to support life upkeep

In order to get to the Duelist tree and because I want to play as crit melee I dropped the axe and shield nodes and focussed on general One-Handed passives only. I found a good set of One-Handed passives in the Duelist tree with good crit chance though which are near a good 16% life node I also took.

On gear I first of all need to focus on Life, Life leech, life regen and resistances. I also need a weapon with high crit chance that will require DEX or INT and ideally it also needs a lot of fire and cold damage to make full use of Ice Bite and Lava Lash.
The good news is that Evasion gear can be now also viable with Iron Reflexes what gives me more gear options (thanks Lostform).
Increased elemental/physical damage, mana, Dex and INT on gear are probably also needed stats for this build.

I have tried this before and it will be very gear dependent that's for sure. :)

I posted a build I WAS planning to make:

This is a melee build that has a tree balanced between offense and defense. Now I got some responses coming for experienced player (or so it seems).

They basically tell me that this kind of melee builds are not viable for end game and as a melee you are basically forced to go all defense and hope for some offense.

Do you realize that inexperienced players are probably not aware that melee defense (as in life and armor) in PoE's end game is broken. Typically a newbie that starts a melee character will balance defense and offense which is quite logical and supposed to be a wise idea.

Now in the end they will be punished for thinking in a logical way, because they did not choose to go full defense.

This really needs to be fixed, you REALLY need to revert the life nerf and actually buff it after doing so.
Also, I think your ideas on the armor mechanics don't make any sense. It works well against small hits but not against big hits. I read somewhere that the theory behind this is that armor is supposed to work against needles but not against thinks that hit like a truck.

COME ON: This is a fantasy game, if monsters hit like trucks why doesn't armor protect against trucks? The armor is magic for crying out loud!

Melee is my most favorite thing to play in this game because of the challenge. Yeah you could die at any given time to the smallest mistake and i love it. On top of that, Onslaught was brought to us to shove even more dicks up our asses in melee. Beautiful.

On the note of armour, it makes more than perfect sense that my full plate protects me from little monkey punches, but it doesnt stop a horse from trampling me to death. Imagine you were fighting brutus in real life. Do you really think his slam would be any less effective against your human body in platemail? No, the armor is going to make you slow and likely kill you faster. Yeah magic only goes so far in dark fantasy.
depends how far you wanna go and what league you play in. if you wanna play any of the hc leagues, ofc building for defense is a priority. but if you plan to play in standard or anarchy, you don't have to go as defensive as long as you can make progress. melee also doesnt have to be life builds. i get the some ppl coming in to poe believe that life is reserved for melee builds, but it isnt. i'm not saying that life isnt in a bad spot right now, what i'm saying is that life isnt the end all be all answer for melee builds.
LOL I play with 1.5k hp starting merciless with acrobatics. Melee Frenzy Unarmed.
Doesn't make any diff between 10ES and 5ES, or 10k armor and 5k armor, to me. Granite? Endurance? nah, why should I fear death when I play in standard.

Even now at 2.2k hp I facetanked every <70 map bosses.
Only died to reflect coz of my recklessness. Standard...

My most expensive gear is BoR, 2ex+

This guy may not have accurate grammar but he is right about one thing. Life is not that important if you play smart. I've built many a melee that easily survive 70+ maps with 2.5k hp.

Lol...uhm life doesn't matter if you play smart? if your on standard sure, but on hardcore that is the most idiotic thing ive ever heard what happens when you finally make a mistake your 2k hp is not going to save you.
I use to think that melee was underwhelming because it did not have much to offer that can really make it worthwhile to play as. Thanks to the new unique that came out recently, Blood Dance, it really made my melee experience interesting.

As you can see, these are the gears I am using to optimize my melee experience. I also picked out the two frenzy charges from the tree along with Merciless Kraityn reward giving me an additional frenzy charge. At the moment, I got six frenzy charges at my disposal. I am planning on getting my 7th frenzy charges and final one from the tree at lvl 75. I also emphasized on IR to get more armor to absorb more physical damage. I can life leech like no tomorrow thanks to the frenzy charges I have at disposal. Occasionally, I end up getting endurance charges because of BoR. Along with the helm and shield, I got a 43% to block. I many end up getting some additional block chance nodes along the way once I am done with getting the last frenzy charge from the tree. I might get the two endurance charges that are next to me once I get more % block chance nodes. Though, that might be around the mid-late 80s, possibly early 90s.

Since I got a lot of frenzy charges, I barely use vitality aura because of the amount of HP it reserves. The only aura I am using is Grace to get more armor. My only issues is having -60% chaos res, but it is not the end of the world.

This is my current stats

I expect my the 7th and last Frenzy charge to increase my DPS and my armor because of the "4% increased evasion rating" node.

Edit: I occasionally use my +17% Blood Rage to gain more life leech on top of what I already have. Though, I barely notice the difference just because of the chaos dmg dealt from the effect of using the gem.

Edit2: I got a better ring and amulet that gave me a ton of resists and physical damage as well. Now I just need a great belt that gives me some HP and a good amount of phy dmg and maybe elemental dmg.

Edit3: Need to update the pictures since I got more DPS and armor now.
Sometimes you can take the game out of the garage but you can't take the garage out of the game.

I can help you with this...

First of all 120 points is not really good to base a build around try and go for 88(level 70)
crit+hp not a good mix due to reflect which will probably kill you.
Also lava lash and ice bite are terrible because they only multiple the elemental on your weapon and your doing elemental and you have physical leech Node and warlords mark which is physical leech you need the skill gem because that leeches elemental.
You can still get good dps with resolute and no crit.
Lava Lash and Anger Don't add onto Molton shell because its a spell.

Il show you a version of the tree that i would do in a sec.

Here is a basic Structure for a Mele Build
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAgEBAdwCcQSzBS0OrRjbGS4aOCFgJ-0pLimlMgkyiUCgQ5xKfVBQU99X4lhjWNtZ81uvXz9gS2ebZ6BuaXKpdO108Xfleu-E2YTvh3aMz5BVm4OeuaIAp4SsqrndvqfAD8AaxtjSTdSP3Q3sOO8O707wH_Iv9kj8xT38fLh82cT2PC3Grrc-eriuk7Xyplc64Yjx_gryRedjqW54Db6KpBkb-iXfFE1lTUd-q8U=

Thats of Armor/Health to surivive hardcore now you can add on damage or more health if you like to be honest you don't need much damage in the tree because links give enough damage.

Add any Damage nodes or endurnce charges, anything else you want on that build (Level 70)

Also armor nodes are great and whoever said the didn't scale is wrong if your running grace and determ then they will be even more awesome

well I'm not English speaker mistakes bound to happen :)

everyone is going crazy with Armor, Life and IR. But what about alternative defenses?

At 8 Charges,
I have 75% Block, 46% Dodge, 28% Evasion (with Grace)
I blind almost every second with 7APS.
Blind add another 75% (mult.) to my Evasion.
Plus Enfeeble 39%. and 35k dps. (Quality Enfeeble adds more)

Now I have to be very very unlucky to get hit. Like getting Kaom's chest unluckiness.
Chances are I kill him first before he land any hit on me.

Now I may not do many maps yet, esp higher level ones.

plus I have 20% spell dodge, 9% spell block, and almost max resist. and casters die easier anyway.
