Loot system discourages group play
I LOVE the loot system. Screw D3s, its terrible. Instanced loot hurts that game so much and makes it boring and less of a challenge. Thats why D3 is flooded with SO many items.

What those of you who are nay-saying instanced loot are forgetting is that the amount of loot dropped would be the EXACT SAME as it is now, and even divided exactly as it is now. No extra loot would enter the system REGARDLESS of how fast multiplayer games can be cleared. The reason is that those games can be cleared JUST as fast now without instanced loot for the EXACT same amount of gear that would drop in an instanced game. The the instanced game would simply ensure that more casual players who aren't lightning fast a garunteed their drops rather than being forced to play solo because of their slower reaction time.
Additionally you wouldn't really even have to make the loot fully instanced. Just increase the timers to like 6 seconds or more so that each player is assured their proper loot, and unwanted items can still be distributed among the other players. I agree that if instanced loot were done in such a way that the current party loot rate were multiplied by the size of the party it would be HORRIBLE, however if you use the EXACT same amount of party loot that already drops but properly divide it you won't be punishing the people for playing in groups. I loved D2, but the fact is that I rarely if EVER in my entire life got a good drop from any group game because I'm simply not that fast. This effectively means I won't get ANY good gear from any form of group play. Even with a 1-2 second timer, people who don't know what things are worth will end up rushing to pick up random allocated items before they unallocate and end up missing the valuable things. What about the players who want to grab what they earned fairly at a casual speed and look it's value up later? "Cut-Throat" isn't always a desirable experience. My suggested solution would be to allow party leaders to decide whether loot is instanced, temp allocated, or completely FFA. TL;DR just read this very last thing --^ |

I disagree. The current loot system is fine for groups.. just not random players. The loot timer could be a tiny bit longer, but overall I think it's fine. I've been making random groups and putting "please, no ninjas" in the title and overall people seem to listen. Once in a while I'll get a greedy individual but it's nothing a party kick can't solve.
Once you find a couple people who don't just grab anything they see, you can add them to your friends list so you'll be able to continue playing with them and not worrying about the loot system. |

" Yeah, they won't bother stealing worthless stuff. Instead, they'll snatch that 6 link or unique when it finally drops. Have fun with that. |

" I haven't had any problems. Over my time on closed beta, I found a group of about 20 chill people that aren't loot whores and it's been really enjoyable playing with them. Infact, the other day I was playing with a few of them and a six link dropped, just bam, out of nowhere. I didn't even notice and continued killing stuff. They started saying stuff like "wow wtf" in party chat, and when I asked what was going on, they linked it and asked me if I wanted it. Just because some people aren't really.. desirable to play with, doesn't mean you should avoid grouping entirely. I've had some amazing experiences with the people I've met on here. |

Timers actually make the current system feel worse imho. If an item has your name on it you feel ripped off when it's stolen because of ping or other reasons. Without it, you don't feel ripped off because everything is up for grabs. I've had cases where I click and click on the item and it doesn't pick it up only to get it stolen.

I've yet to group with anybody because of it. I have two friends who are gamers. I told them about the game hoping that they'll become my running buddies. Beyond that I'll try to make a few friends in game just by being courteous. But I will not join a random group with the FFA loot.

FFA loot distribution encourages players to not necessarily huddle together 100% of the time to maximize there loot as any one person can pick up loot for the other players.
This encourages players to not huddle together and instead spread out and search a map quickly. You can have 6 people in a party, you can split off in to pairs of 2 and explore in 3 completely separate directions and no one in that party of 6 is any worse for wear. If loot was instanced then everyone would have to always be close enough for there own share of loot to spawn or else the total amount of loot available to the party is reduced. Also the current system means players can return to town without missing out on loot as there partner continues through a dungeon. This is a good thing when playing with friends. All this handwaving makes me sick.
The reality of the game is that in public parties people ninja and scrub everything. Because spell effects plaster the screen most of the time it is impossible to know who got the item. So it does not matter if you make a "no loot whoring party" or whatever you want to call it since the item will be gone and no way to know who looted it. I move a lot due to work reasons which means I play on a laptop. Low fps and high ping means I get things ninja'd 80% of the time. This is a crappy way of handling loot and the result is evident: loot bots will come and people will adopt them full force just like it happened on D2. It is so frustrating -hey, this is a game about loot, remember- that I will probably stop playing after finishing Act 3. The game's nice, but the loot system sounds great on paper. Not so much in the game. Closed beta player, August 2011
