Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
I posted longer thoughts on the announcement thread for the 0.9.10 patch, but I strongly disagree with the idea of having such a short timer to force players in groups to stop fighting and loot mid-battle or miss valuable drops because they had a lagspike or took more than a split second to notice the item. That doesn't sound appealing at all to me for a cooperative group mode, and I will still play mostly solo due to the poor group loot system. Simply adjusting that timer to be substantially longer would make me substantially more comfortable with the future of the game as a whole. The lackluster support for grouping is pretty much the only thing I like less about POE than "that other game," and I really want to see them get this part right so I can lure my gaming friends over to a superior ARPG. That's not gonna happen if GGG still has this fool idea in their heads that I want to have a cutthroat atmosphere with the people I choose to quest cooperatively with.
I would much rather have player-friendly grouping mechanics in general, with frequent Cutthroat league events for when I want the line between friend and foe to be blurry. It's not a satisfying cutthroat experience that my groupmate can ninja my loot if I don't selfishly dart in every few seconds to stop fighting and pick up items, unless I can kill the bastard and take my stuff back. Hmm...reading about the devs wanting a cutthroat action for looting really doesn't make me feel like a happy camper. I truly feel this will make players less willing to party up. My main character is a ranger and I just don't see me running with any strangers any time soon. And none of my friends play this game.
I think the best thing to do is allow all options to be selected via party leader. So those who want cutthroat FFA can turn it on and those who don't can do something else. More choices for your customers is never a bad thing. |

One second? Who presses alt every half second, they may as well add an option to just toggle item display permanently.
It should be at least 3 seconds or so, with the portion based on travel time being travel time if you're not going strait for the spot (as in, enough to account for things like going around a wall or dodging mobs). Last edited by elvenchakra#7201 on May 26, 2012, 4:10:26 PM

" There is already an option to toggle item display permanently. I have always had it on. I cant remember the hotkey, but you can check the ingame options. |

How it works currently is fine, when you party with somebody and if something drops that matches the other persons class/build let them take the item. It is all about respect and common courtesy.

Some people tend to treat others over the internet on the same level as NPCs. Or even worse. It's sad but nonetheless true.
You guys are the rare ones I see. Online games would be incomparably better with more people like this. ----- Players "less willing to party up" at best. This could ultimately lead to GGG creating a new genre - Massievely Singleplayer Online - MSO if you would. For the Greater Good's sake, at least make it league dependant feature, hardcore league having ffa, default having shared/individual loot or something. Anything. Competing with friends over an item when we want to play together is not my idea of "fun" and I think a few others here will agree with me on it. GGG You are creating a multiplayer game. By my logic, support for group-based gameplay is a must here then, or that MSO thing won't be just a bad joke anymore. |

Oh man, thats so sad. There was pretty much one deciding factor on if I was going to continue playing this game when it went open beta/final and that was the loot system.
If this is how the loot is going to be then no offense, but I'll not be playing anymore, nor donating. I feel its a great shame that such an archaic and dumb system would be used. Really sorry guys but this is probably going to have a massively negative impact on your game now, I think you've made a terrible error in judgement. Several of my friends have already said they think the loot system in this game is bad and won't even consider playing because of it. Regardless, I hope you guys have great luck in the future. You managed to put in some really great ideas and make a great and fun game. I was really hoping for a sensible and fair loot system like D3, or at least some kind of dice thing. Maybe I'll come back in a year or two and check if things changed. Peace out all! Remember, moderators on this forum get their feelings hurt VERY easily and will use any excuse to edit your post. Don't say anything that might upset them or they'll cry and throw a temper tantrum. This of course proves you were right and that they can't take it.

I have to say the drop items at the moment is a pain.
I notice it really does stop me and lots of people from playing with strangers, people even say it openly in game. 7 out of 10 times when I team up, whoever I team up with runs for rares and grabs them regardless of class. even if fighter and dropped item is a wand. Honestly while it is not enough to stop me playing, the current drop system does not enhance the playing experience for me. The one you propose with a few secs timer is better but again, rushing to items for me is not an exciting part of the game, it breaks that feeling of "us vs them", makes it so I cannot play with strangers and enjoy the game, and I think that is a far greater game effect than any thrill I may get from rushing for an item. in fact the most common multiplayer is 2 people in a group doing different levels so they dont *see* each other, and when there is overlap people quit. things that might help: whole party can view the items as they are grabbed (so if you missed somethign cool you can at least ask the other if it can be traded) something as the timer you mention but not just 1 sec! 5+ secs. and affecting only rares and uniques, not white or blues.(dont want 50 timers on screen) have finally gotten used to the lab... I dont hate it anymore.:)
