GGG hates standard.

I really doubt your theory

I reckon that at this point GGG has the ability to hire very talented programmers

Bit of discrete mathematics here. We have two modes: League and Standard. We have a continuum of players (basically). The players near the middle of the continuum wont be satisfied with either end. They'll find fault with league play and find fault with Standard. The players near the ends a pretty happy with their end and don't worry too much about it.

GGG doesn't "hate" any of their players. They know that they need both.

This. And I echo that sentiment even as someone who plays both league and standard. I usually enjoy leagues first, then sometimes skip a league to continue my standard and HC characters.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say. "Talented programmers" probably would have figured out a way to let us play through the story instead of going "Meh, just flag everything in the update as "completed" for these guys." They might have even done it on the cheap.

So far the FoO for standard players is the same kind of janky implementation I've come to expect from GGG. I remember in the pre-lock step days when GGG used to blow a bunch of smoke up our asses about why they couldn't have stable latency like pretty much every other game out there.

Then lo, they hired someone who actually knew what they were doing and things got better.

I guess you missed the interview where the lead programmer told us that he has to tell every new programmer every step for the first 2 month because of the "special" code?
German saying: Schönheit und Funktionalität in Sekundenschnelle zu ruinieren, ist dem wahren Dilettanten keine Herausforderung!
torturo: "Though, I'm really concerned, knowing by practice the capabilities of the balance team."

im just saying everything seems to work great in leagues

its only standard thats all goofed up

Things work in leagues because you guys dump your characters after 3 months. You have no outstanding character data to deal with other than stash tab inventory. THATS why it works, because they don't have to actually address any of the legacy code or characters who are ALREADY leveled up. They don't have to update existing characters in league because leagues characters don't carry over. (Or if they do they go in to standard where most league players admit they leave them to rot.)

Which is why I'm pissed. This is all technical debt that GGG has created for themselves, and instead of actually devoting resources to fixing it, at the same time they're releasing "the biggest update ever that we're so super proud of", they pass the buck on to standard by fucking up our characters, our progression and our experience because "leagues are what we care about." They're sailing a boat while the bottom is rotting out of it and passengers below deck are going "fix this fucking boat man, we don't wanna drown!" But the only thing they're paying attention to are the people on the top deck, in the sunshine, going "Man it's so nice up here! Everything must be great!"

And that's horseshit. Either sunset standard or do your fucking jobs, regardless of what it costs GGG. They created the mess, they have to fix it.

I suppose Standard players like me (yeah i am a standard player, get ready those torches and pitchforks folks!), cant undestand GGG's logic about existing characters in 3.0.
It really looks like they took an extra effort to say "Let's screw standard because we can!".
There are two obvious ways how to migrate Standard to 3.0
* Move all chars to the end of A4. Call this time required for doing low-level quests "a Standard tax". You have your gear, but you have to do the storyline to recover all skillpoints and the map device.
* Auto complete all quests in acts 5-10. GGG does not care about standard, so why this should bother them?
Both simple to implement, and logical.
Instead, they have to create rules, to check quests, and then pick which part of the new content should be marked as done.

I figure your first suggestion would have been best

but people would have bitched about that too

it is a fair trade IMO. Frankly, it is so obvious to me, that I expected exactly this. Well, the world is full of surprises after all.
But (sorry but I won't be looking for link) somebody on the forum said "GGG does not want you to faceroll low-level content with your 90+ level char" or sth like that.
"War's over, soldier. You just don't know it yet. Everybody lost."
I'd have happily ground through the story to recover my skill points, and lost access to the maps for a couple hours, rather than being forced to skip the entire story. Yeah, someone would have objected somewhere but I'm guessing of STD players they'd have been the minority of the minority.

Or with better coding they could have just added a flag to Act 4 Std characters that didn't reward us skill points for doing the quests, and left all our shit alone.
