Do we expect too much from GGG?

Yes we do. Tons of short sighted forum dwellers bitch that the economy isn't what they want it to be, that the drop rates aren't what they want them to be, that balance isn't what they want it to be etc.

Yes tons of entitlement over F2P game. Too many people cry non stop about every little thing. And they mostly cry about things they could fix by just getting good at the game. They don't want to do that though. People think they are amazing at games and know everything so when they play a game like poe and don't get everything handed to them or dont like the fact that you have to use critical thinking to survive and they get extremely frustratrd and take it out on the company.

Can you explain to me, how the entitlement is allowed to be higher in a b2p or p2p game?

Simple, as it happens, would be the operative word for Diablo. “Back then, RPGs were so overwrought with statistics that the genre had shrunk to a tiny audience,” says Erich’s brother and Condor’s co-founder, Max Schaefer.

They were right at that time but few years later, Baldur's Gate proved that the audience that wanted a complex RPG was still huge.

PoE essentially tries to retain that 'action' orientation but has absolutely returned to the overwrought statistics that many people find off-putting. I'd ask if the two are even all that compatible. Diablo III would declare 'absolutely not', but as much as people want to compare the two games, they're really just opposites on the same continuum...but both try to do the same thing, at heart.

The trend to make H'n'S more "complex" began with diablo 2. It became more and more complex over time. In the end, LoD on hell difficulty was basically a big "gtfo" to casuals. PoE continued the trend. Players who wanted a "simple" ARPG got the Torchlight games and Diablo 3. Making another game for that audience would have been pointless for such a small indie company. GGG found a niche, players who like "overwrought statistics" were still playing D2 or other genres. So they focused on them.

A near perfect simulacrum to my thoughts on Charan's excellent post, right down to the Baldur's Gate reference and the niche PoE was pretty much forced to find to be at all relevant and attention grabbing.

well I always did expect too much from GGG, it seems.
my expectations fuelled by those brief moments, where GGG showed they are capable of doing when they want to, as opposed to being incompetent.

but their abilities obviously have limits, and most of the stuff I want them to do, is stuff they probably never had any intention of doing.

well, in light of recent developments - I just hope they are capable of keeping this ship afloat.

I played a few months in open beta. I came back about a month ago and will probably only play a few months again.

I think they made a great game considering it is F2P. I think they continue to make a great game and continue to introduce great features and gameplay options. The masters giving you additional crafting options, the boxes, the corrupted zones and corrupted gems.

I currently have 2x 80+, 2x 60+ and played lots of different characters to 20+. I've never found an exalted or a mirror or one of the very high end uniques. I've never found a 6-link except for Tabula Raza. So RNG hasn't been overly friendly to me but it also doesn't bother me. I play casual and I play solo and I am now doing 70+ maps on one character while leveling another.

I also think they are some of the most open and honest teams I have ever experienced in gaming. Technical explanations regarding issues like desync make it acceptable and bearable for me as I understand the issue and why it happens.

My expectations that are not met are:

1. Trading - having to use forums and 3rd party websites to be able to trade is ridiculous. I vendor so much gear that I think may be worth something just because I can't be bothered to go through the hassle of the current trade system.

2. Inventory management - maybe I am just a hoarder but I have more than a tab full of currency, a tab for full set gear for the vendor recipe, 3 tabs worth of gems, 2-3 tabs of uniques, 2 tabs of flasks, 1 tab maps, 1-2 tabs of gear that may be worth something. Again I am using a 3rd party tool to search and manage my inventory. Why are there not in-game tools?

If they are so incompetent and you seem to know best you can always give game development a shot, we could see how you'd do. Mighty talk from someone on the sidelines.

But what next? I see limited options for GGG:

stick with the fundamentally flawed PoE engine (as I said earlier, it made sense to create everything by hand at the time, when GGG might have stood for Growing a Garage Game), essentially heaping 'more' onto a pile of 'more' that probably needs less 'more';

sell the game, let a bigger publisher take over and submit to the possibility that PoE was too big an idea for an indie company to fully realise;

or

put PoE on life support and get to work on the next big thing. That game I think we all feel GGG has in them. Their Diablo 2. Not necessarily a 'more' of everything but a refinement of what they've done thus far. The totality of all the things they've learned with PoE1, and no one can say it hasn't been a lot.

Now (or soon) is when we get to see if GGG is a one-trick pony, even if that trick has been nothing short of the world's greatest illusion...Exile.

This is exactly where we are at. Time will tell.

Well said. The coming year will be a very be moment for GGG, and while I do agree that PoE 2 is probably what *should* be worked on.... Considering how hard of a time they have finding new people, I just don't think it's even feasible right now.
I don't think a sequel to POE makes much sense. POE is more of a service than a product and the concept of a sequel doesn't apply to services.

If they have an idea for POE2 that they can't fit into POE, that seems more like a spinoff opportunity to me. Let it be POE:Adventures or what have you.
