Why don't YOU play HC?
because ggg is to STUPID to do a "what killed you" screen like LoL has for example
last time I died, no clue what actually had happened. did party play increase the damage of the lightning shrine manifold? I WILL NEVER KNOW because of this asinine company dodging all the things that need to be done SINCE CLOSED BETA and of course the old problem, it takes way wayyyyy too long to get to a level where playing is fun because you have gear and skills. everything like that is the equivalent of taking a shit. you have to do it whether you want or not cause there's simply no way around it. ever. since I have no hope for significant game design improvements in this game I am officially done with Path of Exile. done for good

I fail to see the fun in dying to things that are out of my control (desync). I do that enough in Standard and it's annoying enough there, being like 5 hours worth of maps just to get back to where you were. Also, being one-shot is stupid, not challenging. All it challenges is to learn how to Alt+F4. Aside from that, I'd love to play hardcore.

I like the thrill but I lack the time (although still quite a lot). I play HC in 1w races etc but haven't played a hc league yet because I like long term builds and don't like leveling too much anymore. Also I like exotic builds like full melee evasion and every time the new HC league adds stuff that makes it even harder for melee so I save myself the frustration.
I didn't even make level 90 in Ambush (I mostly play solo or with 1 friend, didn't play the last month though), so in HC even if I didn't die I wouldn't reach my goal level, especially when they have now shortened the league. So my reasons to play softcore above hardcore is like 4-1 :p Last edited by leto2626#2588 on Aug 28, 2014, 9:30:41 AM

Because I die. It's inevitable and I prefer to play longer-term characters rather than rerolling. I rerolled for like a year straight and now I just like to come home to play the same characters and have access to the same stash without worry. The highest toon I have on HC is a 65 Scion and tbh I don't really ever plan on doing much more than a few races a season to get some alt art unique occasionally.

Why don't I play hardcore? Because I'm the type of player who creates glass cannons and never hesitates to click on an unidentified strongbox. In other words: I enjoy playing recklessly.

Desyn and fps lag. I play the hardcore leagues but always with marauders that stack armour life and resists over damage tenfold, making them kinda boring to play. Sadly, no other characters can survive 1-5 seconds of me having no control over the game.

I've been a Hardcore junkie since trying it after beating normal in D2. It's a state of mind and a taste for Roguelike games.
SC is about having one character forever and progressing with gear/levels HC is about the journey of each character. Seeing how far you can get with each weird build. There is a special attachment to each character and a sadness when they die but each moment of gameplay is so much more fun. Things like Desync are there but they are a fact of life for all Hardcore so it doesn't really matter. There is always another 3 or 4 builds I want to try next so I never have a problem with death. I also usually play 3-4 characters simultaneously so there is always one to fall back on when another is lost. Anyway I think SC players like to focus on their character like an RPG where you can save and reload whenever you die. Hardcore like Roguelike gameplay where each time you play you are seeing how far you can get. Last edited by ZtruK#0754 on Aug 28, 2014, 11:11:22 AM

I finally jumped into HC as a few of my friends were interested as well.
Sure enough, they all rip'ed but have remade a few times as I am the only one alive in merciless. I chose the safest build possible (fire totem LEL) Anyways, it's been a blast so far. I haven't had to ALT+F4 or go back to character screen and I don't feel like I'll ever do it. Primarily a softcore player, I've never needed to alt+f4 so I guess I'm just not used to it. The 4 or 5 extreme close calls I've had in Beyond so far I ended up piano potting and running for dear life. Glad I'm finally trying it though. It's definitely a different experience. |

My main two reasons for still playing softcore instead of hardcore:
1) I experiment too much. Whenever something new or interesting drops i want to try my hand at it. I like doing so in the same environment as i was playing in before to see if it works, if i can get away with it, etc. When i get a new map or side area, etc, i want to hop in and see what it does, and if i can handle it, or handle it better. I've died numerous times to the Jungle Valley boss, and love seeing how far each alt gets against it. When i have leveled up a new alt i want to see if he can handle half regen, and so on. 2) I don't have enough patience. When i get to the Sceptre of God i dont want to levelup in docks until i can cope with Dominus. I rather die three times and be done with it, than wait for the drop that allows me to. I use my adrenaline quicksilver all the time between packs, i only want to tip-toe in a new environment when i want to tip-toe. When i want to try a new build i want to try the new build asap. If it includes a blood magic aura to get to low-life i want to try that at level 24, even if the aura i use is bullshit. If i want to go Skeletons and Zombies i'd rather do so when i get the gem and get by using them with Minion Instability or something rather than wait until they can actually handle content well, and so on. oh, and here's a little thought i had a while ago, which i think sums up the difference between the leagues quite nicely: 'Softcore players know more, Hardcore players know the things that matter.' or if you like the advocate of the devil version better: 'Softcore players know more (but much of it is useless), Hardcore players know the things that matter (but pay the price for doing so).' |
