Is melee at a disadvantage?

Let me answer your question with an equally intangible mind bending question:

I don't think it's a disadvantage.
I use teleport and jumping crystals to close the gap but often the enemy comes to me.
Do you have much or any evasion stat? Bosses hit hard and evasion helps more than armour against them. If you have a lot of evasion forget I spoke :)
Melee will always be at a disadvantage so long as this game has such shoddy netcode / desync.

If you actually have to touch mobs to kill them, you will always have a higher risk of dying than a similarly powerful/skilled ranged player.

melee used to be very viable before open beta by the way, first people in the HC and SC ladders were melee, groundslam used to be one of the most popular skills in the game

The only reason melee has become harder to play is because at OB they increased monster damage by a massive amount and every melee char needed to slap in most of the points in defensive nodes

yes everyone remembers the kaoms heart carnage heart ground slam 2h marauder very well...

you take yourself too seriously to reply to me please don't do it anymore lol

back in my day i would've called you bad names

How players want melee to be:

Close enemy combat with full contact, dodging enemy blows, hitting enemies. Doing higher damage then spell casters and bows and relying on leech to survive.

How melee plays in PoE:

Lightning Strike, Spectral Throw, Master of the Arena + increased aoe + (Insert AoE skill).
You kite your way with AoE or cheese it with ST/LS.
Being closer to enemies => easier to desync because of pathing issues.
No real DPS advantage compared to range builds, nor survival.
2h melee is pretty much a joke because shield is the mother of all defenses (and a dps boost in some cases also).
Dual wield block builds are incoming with the added block nodes so those might be good in the future because higher damage than 1h but still block.
Melee relies heavily on Multistrike for most builds which lock you down in a place for 3 swings.

this guy doesn't know how to kite with melee builds haha

edit: cleave with increased aoe, double strike with melee splash
Melee builds don't kite. They reposition at best. If you're "kiting" yo uare by definition fighting from range.

It's like equating gliding to powered flight.

And if you need to "kite" as melee you're missing the whole point of fighting in melee. Which is generally a power fantasy revolving around being an unkillable juggernaut. Or an untouchable one. But either way a power fantasy.

no you're playing with what the game gives you

shift clicking while running backwards to evade damage while producing damage is the same concept with melee and ranged, just different weapons. stop trying to be so deep. words can have different meanings depending on the context.

You don't kite as melee..
I've already played melee and ranged characters.

First time, the melee was "more viable". It had more damage and you could get a decent survivability, aka attack and spell block. I've played a maxblock character with decent life pool, most of the time, I was unkillable (like standing in a group of that blue-fire-dog-bears in the docks without any problem). Of course, the hard-hitter bosses are dangerous and the block chance is capped at 75% (without extra items, like The Anvil) so they hit you sometimes. And it hurts. Really. :)

For some months, mostly I'm playing ranged characters. Currently, I have a lvl67 ice spear witch. It's pretty easy to use. Without any crit modifier, every second hit crits and locks them in place. So most of the time, I'm just standing and shooting that ice spears. Besides that I'm using Cloak of Defiance (MoM) and Artic Armour which gives me a decent survivability without any armour and evasion.

The new Tornado Shot skill is awesome, however as a "bower", you have to get a good amount of evasion rating. Sadly I have only 3k at lvl65 (without Grace) because I don't have the right gear yet.

Summarize my useless post, the ranged characters seems to be "stronger" or say "more viable". I think especially the casters, because they can be beginner-friendly. An attacker (doesn't matter if it's a bow or anything else) can be more expensive to be as viable as a caster. But I don't mind, I love casters. :)

However there are some melee-like spells, like Flame Surge and Freezing Pulse. Nor of them are really melee but basically low-range. I'm still thinking of playing a melee or melee-like CoC build with the spells mentioned above. Using Double Strike for truely melee char or Reave to be able to keep a little range from the monsters, especially the bosses.

PS:
Oops, it's a littlebit long post, sry for that. And I know, I know, R.I.P. english. :D
