Is melee at a disadvantage?

I'll admit I'm new at this game. I'm playing in normal with a templar (and I'm probably wearing terrible gear with a terrible spec). But I'm feeling like most bosses I fight I get punished for being in melee range. In order to survive I need to run around at a distance, tossing traps or using my weak ranged attacks. If I get close, I get smoked.

Are the ranged classes/builds easier in most situations? Or are there some good tips for melee in path of exile?

If you're just starting out and don't have any levelling gear, any spec can be a bit tough. Typically for melee levelling you want to pick up and ID any big 2H weapons and hope for good physical rolls. Other than that, use potions in boss fights. Life leech helps, and of course grabbing some health/regen nodes along the way helps a lot. Make sure you resists are as high as possible as well as having some armor.
Well yeah you have the disadvantage of having to be in melee range to attack, that's what melee is lol

Melee is by definition at a disadvantage in aRPGs. But generally there's enough of an offset to make it functional.

Just winging it with melee in PoE is not great though.

Kiting is something ranged builds do. To kite is to keep an opponent at range while maintaining offensive potential. And increasing your range isn't an answer to being melee.

Melee builds don't kite. They reposition at best. If you're "kiting" you are by definition fighting from range. Hint: Cleave is used at range. Double strike kites like a brick.

It's like equating gliding to powered flight.

And if you need to "kite" as melee you're missing the whole point of fighting in melee. Which is generally a power fantasy revolving around being an unkillable juggernaut. Or an untouchable one. But either way a power fantasy.

no you're playing with what the game gives you

shift clicking while running backwards to evade damage while producing damage is the same concept with melee and ranged, just different weapons. stop trying to be so deep. words can have different meanings depending on the context.

i think increased AOE cleave is my favorite. it's a lot of fun attacking stuff almost half a screen away.
