Are the Devs still making the game they want to play?

I'm fine with FFA... as long as I get to punch that 0-dps, ninja-looting douche monkey in his stupid face ;)

The game would most certainly die out much faster, but it wouldn't matter if the founders were walking away with seven-figures (in the context of them being strictly a business).

Not necessarily. More money means that they can invest more money in "fixing" the game, which could mean more content and bug fixes, which in return keep more people playing. Whether or not the "pay to win" aspect removes more people in the long run than the extra content and bugfixes do bring in/retain, is a hard question to answer.

Why dont you find like minded people who *enjoy* loot tension and party with them instead of doing public parties?

The thread isn't about whether or not players like or do not like "loot tension", it is about "Are the devs still making the game they want to play?"

FFA is ONLY usuable when you're playing friends. Public parties are ONLY PA, end of story. I can't quite see the point of FFA in public parties, where everyone will focus on getting loot, instead of actually fighting the mobs.

In fact, I don't understand why SA is default setting for parties. Public parties are the ones you switch between very frequently - thus PA should be default setting, so you don't have set it every time.

While the vast majority of public games are PA, I don't think they all need to be or should be.

The following has been my experience in public games, YMMV:

With a good team of players in an SA game, the focus is on the killing and players seem to know what they are looking for. Some ignore most armor drops except for a few types, some are just after jewelry and belts (not sure why boots aren't nabbed that often, they tend to be a low percentage drop for me when trying for chaos recipes). I've seen many lower tier unique items left, and occasionally higher level ones. With a good team, players generally expect the others to pick up a nice unique drop, and only move in if the player who dropped it seems to be ignoring it.

In the past week or so, I've seen Windripper, Lioneye's Glare, Heartbreaker, Carcass Jack, Ming's Heart and Marylene's Fallacy drop in public SA games without a single other player darting over to try and grab them.

I've also seen Sunblast, Magnate, Blood Dance, Geofri's Crest, Hrimnor's Resolve and a slew of other uniques left on the ground by the allocated player who just didn't want them. In a few cases, other players pointed it out, and the "allocated" player usually replied they didn't need them.

In couple of games, I've seen nice uniques where the person about to pick it up, checks if anyone needs it before they do.

This isn't to say all such public SA games are this way, but at least currently, they aren't as bad as some might think.

One thing I do notice, is that more players are contributing, or trying to contribute to the killing in the SA games.

I think the option is nice, and having the option might mean an improved chance of a better quality of player in many public SA games. I could be wrong on this - it's just been my impression.

I do wish there was some incentive so that there were more SA and FFA games. Maybe a 'medium" allocation?

How would adding a new allocation make people use SA and FFA more? Why would you want to urge people to use allocations they dont want to use? Just make a public party with friends and ask them if its ok to use FFA/SA, done.

I always use SA with my BLOW fellas. I leave their stuff for them unless its clear they dont want it and whatever they say they need they get from me if possible.

I'm fine with FFA too, as long as I'm not in that party.

As soon as party leader click on "Free For All", I click on "Leave Party".

Also, fair play is too rare, i been in parties where people wait at PA loot for someone to leave the area or pop a tp to go there later and pick the missed item up. I and few others make shout outs if something decent dropped so it can be picked up.

That just *might* be some of that loot tension that he's talking about.

After all, it's one thing to alert someone to a chaos they missed... if someone missed a friggin MIRROR, I imagine the number of people who would actually speak up could be counted on 1 hand.
#1 rule of official forum boards of every video game ever: use the forums to relay info, gather suggestions, or the rare narrow-focused Poll; but NEVER as "feedback".

#2 rule: Never say the #1 rule in an official capacity. Let some guy on the forums say it, leaving yourself plausible deniability.
I personally love PA, but not because I have problems with other people taking all/"my" loot, I like it because if I have PA on, my friends dont whine on me for taking everything. I usually play fast, meaning I dont like standing around looking at loot or whatever, I just pick up everything of interest and move on. If I play with my friends, they constantly whine about not being able to pick up anything because I take it all :P
Permanent allocation is just as much about greed as FFA is.

The difference is that they want the loot to be thiers without having to worry about competing for it. The idea that drives both types of greed is that you want loot, and no type of allocation will change that desire in a game so heavily based on loot. Its just how it is.

Im not advocating any particular allocation system, as I dont really care. If I want an item Im going to pick it up as soon as possible regardless of the allocation type assuming it wont kill me to do so. Never know when you might get disconnected.
HAIL SATAN!
Different loot allocation types exist so... make a guild that caters to the one you like and play with those people?

Some of you guys are complaining that options exist for fuck's sake. When did imposing one's likes and dislikes on everyone else become a good thing exactly?

But presenting your argument by claiming that SA isn't in the game, and the game isn't what we want to play any more, is wrong. And at least in this dev's case, talking about "how the dev's want to play" has no relevance to public parties, since they have no overlap.

Mark, Thanks for the reply!

I am playing the game every day and telling you my experiences, it feels strange that I even have to come here to "make an argument" at all for something that seems so obvious, nevertheless. SA is in the game, FFA is in the game yes, but Item Tension is not.

I like to play the game the way the devs think the game is best also, and I cannot anymore. (I'm specifically refer to statements made by Chris and the posts that Erik wrote on Reddit defending GGG's positions on loot tension that I very much agreed with - those were the deciding factors that motivated me to become a diamond supporter anyhow) –I’ll dig them out if you like, but you should be familiar with them already.

Stuff like this:

- It's important that the time is low enough that the player can only get the item if they are paying attention and make an effort to immediately grab it.
- The allocation times can be lower or non-existent in hardcore or cut-throat leagues.

Do I need to work harder to find "friends" that want compete with me for loot? NO. When you play with friends you share loot, there is no other reason to run SA or FFA with them, that does not equal "item tension". We are just saving time by allowing the timer to run out on an item for someone else.

About 16-18 months ago when the forums were topped daily by FFA/PA looting arguments, the main thing the Pro-PA group was asking for was a league of their own where they could play without “loot tension”. So here we are, and guess what? EVERY LEAGUE is now dominated by the PA setting.

Here is another one from that same post:

Players who wanted an allocated looting system will hopefully be happy that this system mitigates item loss due to latency and travel distance.

Players who wanted a free-for-all looting system will hopefully be pleased - with this system they can take any item they want if the allocated player is not paying attention to the drops.

I identified strongly with that second group, being a long time Daiblo2 player and I feel our interests were very simply sold out.
