Suggestions for new character naming

Really Sohchai? Didn't know that. Well, if that's the case, then to hell with having a third name. It won't be so bad to make that type of change. Well, not AS bad anyway.

See a pattern? Use the underline and imagination. Want Thor? Its taken. Try Thor_Almighty. Or how about Thor_Thundergod? Get weird, Thor_Monkeybutter.

So far the argument for is often 'I have no imagination.' Not a great argument.

Those names all come into the "shoppingcart335" category imo. I mean, if you like that type of name, more power to you. However there are many of us who actually like having something that resembles a name. Not a gag or serial number.

Slapping words together at random isn't originality, it's the easy way out.
And even if it was a "I have no immagination" excuse that kept us from finding available names, why should people be penalised for it? Like I said way back, finding a name in a game shouldn't be a chore that takes more then 30 seconds unless you really want to.

I guess my point went right on by. How about Bob_Evens? And they are original. Took thought and aren't shoppingcart335. Thor123 is. Want another example? The_Skyreaper, Lord_Skyreaper, General_Skyreaper.

Asking for the rest of us to give up unique names is what shoppingcar335 is all about. You have want I want and that's not fair. Well sorry, life is never fair, but it can be glorious.
I was seriously demotivated when my name got stolen, even though I was able to take it in any other game.
This should be rectified. It's not that hard. System that is tied with your account is a great idea and it works with Diablo 3. Use that, that's what good was about d3 (very short list btw).
Well snap. I'm still stuck on wanting to take out unique naming in this game, but you guys do bring up good points Cazychel and MoonYu. If only that other guy was as level headed as you guys in his arguments. XD

Anyway, I guess there's no real need to take out the unique naming system just yet other then to cater to those who have trouble with it.

However what's going to happen in a few months? Cyberia brought up something that may eventually make your solutions still not cover everything. Namely, the fact this game runs off one server. Usually, large games have their player base split across multiple servers and names are only unique to each server. Games that don't do this tend to not hold the naming restriction. Options are likely to keep dwindleing over time no?

I still think that it's surely a good idea to come up with a solution to this earlier rather then later. While it's still manageable.

Edit:

I just thought of a method that may be entertaining, though it would be hell to implement.
Each account would be assigned a random "last name" that would be given to each character made by it. There would only be a limited number of difrent last names, so many players would actually share one, and the summ total of the name would have to be unique. Therefore, there couldn't be two "Sephiroth Zephyresh" charactrs, but there could be a Zephyresh and a Galantre or something like that. The last name would only apear on top of your status bar and in global chat. Just a random thought. Don't think it's actually a solution.

I am NOT for the generated lastname idea, heh.

I am for allowing spaces instead of underscores. Underscores look goofy in what should be a proper name.

What I don't understand is that half the people opposing the idea are saying the change is bad because other people will get lazy. Be original if you want to! No one is trying to take that away from you by changing the naming system from unique to non-unique. Not everyone wants to spend so much time on a character name (or four).
Sides, once PvP is up, you'll be able to bring down the hurt on all those that use those cliche names you hate. Think of it as an added way to vent out at the end of the day! :p

Edit: (read the next post before this edit)

What's stopping you? XD

Was going to edit but SOMEBODY had to post after me...

My problem with the opposition is not because I want to encourage lots of common name choices, but because I want to discourage:

...or rather, being forced into it because Doooooooom, Dooooooom, Dôooooooom... was taken. See?

Ok, I just couldn't leave without saying something about this. You're basically giving the middle finger to anyone that picks up this game six months from now and is trying to make a comprehensible name (not, well see above) and will probably fail because everyone took everything.

I'm speaking for the big picture. All those examples given by all of you may be available NOW (reminder, we're just 2 weeks into open beta), but good names will be more valuable than gold in the distant future if you have to fight over it with hundreds of thousands to millions of people (and with multiple characters per account, so multiply).

Just an Observation, but;

The OP is stating that s/he wants originality of naming AND the ability for more than ome person to have the same same...

Ummm.. how is reusing someone elses name original?

You misunderstood. All I want is to be able to create a character and name him between 30 seconds to a minute. If I chose to be original, then so be it, but we shouldn't be restricted to be original as a base. Certainly not penalised at any rate for picking a name that's already taken, no matter how common or original it is.

It should also be noted that I like making original names, but original doesn't mean unique. I also tend to like my names short, and the shorter a name is, the more likely it is to be taken already, no matter what letter combination you use.

I'm not asking anyone to give up on having unique names, you can very well still have a unique name without the restriction. However, the restriction on the other hand, is very active in keeping anyone from not having a unique name. As for the fairness bit, there's nothing I can say about that. You're absolutely right, but I don't think it applies here.
