Number of players decreasing

I had the standalone, and also merged it with steam for convenience as i've used steam for many years now.

Two things I want to throw out there:

1) Path of Exile, is (and has been)in the Top 30 games played on Steam.... Consistantly. Over 6,600 players played the game at it's peak today.

2) A lot of people will try a F2P game, regardless of it's genre/type, and simply find it's not for them. If you see fluctuation in the numbers it merely means some people tried it and didn't return or real life happened... etc.

I wouldn't base anything off of steam charts basically because they don't tell you anything except peaks and current players and they even say it's not to be used as a tool. It's there just to give us some idea of what games are more popular.

Ranking 28th+ is actually quite good considering the massive amount of titles Steam has. I think that's great.

This is far to well reasoned and not nearly reactionary enough, can we get this removed pls.
Noblesse oblige
The game has been hemorrhaging players as of late but it won't mean anything until new leagues start. Total number of steam players in first week of new leagues is a much more interesting statistic.
Anarchy/Onslaught T shirt
Domination/Nemesis T shirt
Tempest/War Bands T shirt
statistically speaking, steam is a large enough sample size to have confidence in the results it gives of the overall population. As long as there is nothing intrinsically different about steam users than regular gamers.

So enough with the "Not everyone uses steam" BS. Take a statistics class before spouting off

Anyways...

The OP isn't taking into account that steam sales started through the 4 month league when the population natrually declines.

I would be supprised if there WASN'T a decline at the end of a league...

But there isn't anything to worry about unless you don't see that there a large population increase for this expansion.

Oh look a ( sky is falling ) thread....I better stop playing this and find something new.
I would say that most of the Steam players are newcomers, since it has only been available from steam since the release. And, as in any free to play game, only a small percent of the newcomers will stay and become regular players. I think that is the main reason why those numbers are dropping that quickly.

Sorry if it has already been stated, I didn't read the whole thread.

But...

...not everyone uses steam.
Why do we analyze the steam chart every few weeks? It follows a very clear pattern...
League comes out, population goes up.
League matures, population drops.

It's really not difficult people...

If you select "all", you can see the trend for the past four months. The overall trend is very clear: numbers are steadily declining. I expect there will be a spike in the next 1-2 weeks, but charts like these are only meaningful if they cover a longer period of time.

The number of global channels has also decreased steadily, so this backs the numbers. I think it is pretty normal for this game (both for its type and for the way it is designed). Of the several people I dragged into the game around release, no one is playing anymore. Frustrated with crafting, not interested in trading, tired of dying in merciless, annoyed at the lack of respec -- those are the reasons I got when I asked. I don't agree with all of them (I don't want easy respeccing, and I think the game is fine in merciless), but I can see why people feel that way.

I generally find it more productive to ask "why?" and come up with possible solutions (if the retention rate is lower than anticipated) than to deny the situation or pretend that it doesn't mean what it most likely does mean.
Also i'd like to add that there is also a yearly influx of gaming traffic on steam between november and february due to the holidays, the steam sale and time off for some.

There was, i think this is correct, approx. 8 million users at it's peak during that timeframe, so it wouldn't surprise me you'd see a drop off on almost every title after then because it's off to school, back to work... etc.

Well i stopped playing other games to play this, but I don't refer to them as games that suck or i lost interest in. I just simply play this more often now as it's a great game.

I agree the trend is going down, but that's how most games are. The games that are F2P, if not accepted and adored early, are often not played because it was just that... free. I know if I paid for a game (esp if it was expensive) i'd make sure to get my money's worth.

With a F2P model, it's hard when your name's not DOTA or TF2, which are always the most popular titles on steam (don't forget CS:GO).
