The point of your first character is really more to get the hang of the game and get a solid handle on how the basics work. I went into it expecting my first character to be crap, and boy did she ever turn out to be crap. She was a summoner/fireball/firestom witch and around the middle of Act 2 normal I hit a wall and couldn't progress with her. I didn't really consider it a loss, more a foregone conclusion that I'd get stuck somewhere and almost certainly have to start over. Just comes down to your point of view, I suppose.

But to address the question in the title, the point of this game, like every other game, is to have fun. Some people find doing the same thing over and over fun, and if you're not enjoying the game, then it's probably not the game for you.
