Still though getting hung up on what to call a game is rather pointless. Online-ARPG. Labels don't really matter. The gameplay is what matters.

Agreed. Why are we arguing about this? this wont change the game in any ways.

MMM- Massively Multiplayer Online Game

MMMORPG- Massively Multiplayer Online Role playing game.

PoE will cater to a very large audience so that right there will make it a MMO, but GGG has stated they don't want the connotations that go with that word.

The reason is that people don't actually think of the true definition they think of the WOW definition. Still it is important not to get to stuck on labels. Since PoE will be trying a new approach to this game type.

In order to qualify as Massively Multiplayer a game must present an opportunity for hundreds or thousands of players to be in the same area at the same time.

If you don't have that requirement then every online game with more than a couple players would fall within the definition.

Massively Multiplayer is moreso a technical architecture that can send object data to thousands of players at the same time.

POE does not fall within that constraint because of instancing, nor does Diablo since it caps groups per zone... however WOW, EQ, COH, DAOC, etc.. they do allow hundreds of players or even thousands of players into the same area.

If POE town instances allow hundreds or thousands though, that would constitute an MMO whether they like it or not, even if the actual game only allows 4-6.

Guild wars 1 was a mmo. Everything was instanced except for the towns. Just like PoE

Oh also torchlights item system plays like a mmos.

Also wtf is a troll on these forums. I could post somthing like "no thats a bad idea because of bla bla bla". Then that rainbow guy or someone else will go TROLL! You trolling on me ill troll on you or somthing along those lines or "Troll harder". Do people even know what trolling is?

there is so much people calling for trolls that i can't figure out what it is D:
yeah i'm an ignore lol
Trolling (my definition) writing things to deliberately anger or annoy another person.

Good trolling (my definition) being clever, and duping someone into getting angry when they really have no reason to.

But really... enough of the "what is a MMO" debate. The lines are very blurry. If you look at the letters themselves and what they stand for "massively multiplayer online" you can think of a thousand examples that don't share many similarities. MW2 vs WoW? whats the difference.

Have you even played Guild Wars?

I'm thinking not.

Also, no game allows for thousands of people to be online in the same zone at the same time... and if they do, have fun looking at the ground until your PC crashes.

Way to skip over the rest of what I said...

Yes one is an RPG (though I think that term is a misnomer as well, don't you play a "role" in Doom?) Yes the other is a FPS.

my POINT was, that if all a MMO is, is a game played online with lots of other players, then their is no difference between calling WoW a MMO or MW2 a MMO... yet, people will argue till they die that their is some big distinction between the two.

Like I said, to be an MMO all you have to do is present an opportunity to stand in the game with hundreds of other people.

I don't know if Modern Warfare allows for hundreds of people in the same spot, or if Guild Wars did... or whatever... but if you cannot physically interact with hundreds or thousands of players at the same time, the game is NOT an MMO.

Most games today are not true MMO games, they are just MO games... multiplayer online. They only support a couple dozen players in any one zone at a time typically.

Online media over time have attempted to ignorantly equate MMO to RPG, however that's just stupid... the terms have nothing to do with one another.
