Frankly PoE doesn't have to worry too much about the competition because it has something very significant that all of the others don't have: it's free.

Well, PoE is released around the same time as Guild Wars 2 (buy once, no monthly fees), they're still going to have a very hard time attracting people (especially seeing the large amount of media exposure GW2 had already received). PoE could definitely use more media exposure...

Typically ARPGs have never had monthly fees... So what's the difference?

And Hellgate: London had huge media exposure, it still failed miserably. Media exposure =/= success.
ROFL, this thread became troll sanctuary. Great job, Rusty!

Right, a bad game with a lot of media exposure still remains a bad game. But a good game that nobody knows about will fail just as badly. And I hope PoE will go in neither of these categories.

And @tormenta: critical notes and recommending more media exposure for PoE makes people trolls? So if it's up to you, only fanboys who always say yes and amen are allowed on this forum?

MMM- Massively Multiplayer Online Game

MMMORPG- Massively Multiplayer Online Role playing game.

PoE will cater to a very large audience so that right there will make it a MMO, but GGG has stated they don't want the connotations that go with that word.

The reason is that people don't actually think of the true definition they think of the WOW definition. Still it is important not to get to stuck on labels. Since PoE will be trying a new approach to this game type.

In order to qualify as Massively Multiplayer a game must present an opportunity for hundreds or thousands of players to be in the same area at the same time.

If you don't have that requirement then every online game with more than a couple players would fall within the definition.

Massively Multiplayer is moreso a technical architecture that can send object data to thousands of players at the same time.

POE does not fall within that constraint because of instancing, nor does Diablo since it caps groups per zone... however WOW, EQ, COH, DAOC, etc.. they do allow hundreds of players or even thousands of players into the same area.

If POE town instances allow hundreds or thousands though, that would constitute an MMO whether they like it or not, even if the actual game only allows 4-6.

Still though getting hung up on what to call a game is rather pointless. Online-ARPG. Labels don't really matter. The gameplay is what matters.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
