WHY DON'T YOU LIKE TO TRADE?
|
If the lake is the game in its entirety, then I love the lake.
That doesnt mean I have to like everything about the lake, and it certainly doesnt mean I have to like FISHING in the lake. Also, I have sold items through the forums, and through the game. Ive sold things for more than they are worth and less than they are worth, and in all my experiences one thing is certain. No matter what, trading takes time away from my fucking destroying monsters. Worse, its actually MORE EFFECTIVE than destroying monsters. The reality is, traders are not the FISHERS of lake poe, they are the merchants of lake poe, who buy the fish off the fishers and then sell it to everyone fucking else for a profit. IGN

Simple.
Because I don't like to use stuff that are possibly be mass produced by bots and no-lifers (no hate here), the reason is emotional - even though 2 items are identical, the self-found one feels more quality. Secondhand items are also good. You won't have my gear.

"In my view this is a bit of a cop-out. When it comes to certain things, like unnecessary rudeness, I totally agree that's on the players, not on the devs. However, the core behaviors are predictable. It would be like saying the design of poker doesn't necessarily include bluffs or the calculation of pot odds, both of which, if you want to get technical, are abstractions created by the players. However, they are both very much a part of the game, and predictably so; the same can be said of many trade behaviors. "That's a very good point, but the thing that keeps the summoner build fun is that it's optional; it's not so OP that everyone is beating the game with robots, and there is still value in getting your own hands dirty. Generally speaking, when designers are dealing with automatation mechanics — whether it's minions, totems, trigger gems or automated trade functions — one should err on the side of caution so the manual option isn't obsoleted. I actually had a full ten-page thread where, together with other users such as DalaiLama, I pondered some automated options for trading, and how to maintain skill balance while utilizing them. Notice how it creates a system substantially different from Diablo 3, where automation was flagrantly, unapologetically overpowered. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. There's also that feeling of amazement when something awesome drops or crafts for you. If you merely trade for it, you don't get the same satisfaction.

The actual physical nausea I get having trade chat on for more than a few minutes (although I've learned how to atleast post on a couple trade channels then immediately turn it off again after)
And that most people are either greedy, idiots, or both... I think I'm to misanthropic to deal with trading in a game like this. Designer of The Broken Crown

" I list stuff in a shop thread, but bumping it still feels spammy. You don't need much to get into the low 80s anyway. You can get a critical mass of currency by flipping currency. That's not much fun, though. Overall, I haven't had too much trouble selling the better drops I've had, especially when a league is fresh. However, I've found it to be much easier to sell stuff than to buy. Searching (even with external tools) and trying to contact/meet with sellers can get tedious. This site doesn't email you when you receive a PM or get a response on a thread, so you have to check frequently. When it gets to the point that it makes sense to write a quick-and-dirty site scraper to spam requests to this site because it doesn't have push-behavior, something is wrong. Oh, and those shop indexers... they divide into about 3 equal groups:
- "This is my gear, it's not for sale!" - "This is for sale, but I'm not going to tell you for how much" - "This is for sale, but you probably can't afford it" Designer of The Broken Crown

I think that calling it the Self Found League is poor marketing. People see it as being only about finding items. I think that if, when the concept was introduced, it had been referred to as the Crafting Only League it wouldn't have caused the same degree of drama. The removal of trading is only half of the equation, it's always stated in a negative context, and "self found" wording makes people think that it's just people feeling bad about not finding good stuff.
The Crafting league name changes it into a positive statement. It changes to being about something that you get to do instead of what you don't get to do. PoE has really good concepts about item creation, but they just don't make any economic sense. You can trade 1 exalt for something that you would likely not be able to craft with 50. I really don't care who has what crazy good gear, I just want to make or find good-enough, useable gear that is 100% mine. I want to grind for exalts so that I can use them without that being a completely idiotic thing to do 99% of the time. I don't know whether or not the point of the original post was actually the topic question, or if it was just assumed that disliking trading was the reason for interest in a self found league. I would say that 30% of my interest in SFL is due to my dislike for trading (which I'm willing to elaborate on if that was the real goal), and the other 70% is because this game is really close to having a fun, personal way of getting gear but has to balance that against a trade economy. And the trade economy always wins those battles. |

" I agree, it bugs me to death that people post their gear that's not for sale in a trading forum. Like the other day I was searching for a lioneye to buy. 90% of them are not for sale. Who's stupid idea was it to do this!? |
|
" All of the dynamics of loot in this game make for an incredibly delicate balance of drop rates and crafting percentages. It's really just about where it needs to be right now. I've never considered the idea of a SFL a particularly negative one, I just think the devs' limited resources could be better spent on other things than redesigning the game for a small chunk of the population. Maybe a few years down the road. |
