Steam lists PoE as an MMO?

LOL at all these BS opinions on what an MMO is based entirely on what one particular MMO is probably like.

Loot drops are random in almost every MMO I've played, only a select few put loot in specific places.

But nope, loot mechanics don't determine the genre of a game, what stupidity.

then you probably never played an MMO ...

in an MMO you cannot get the best possible weapon or armor by killing random mobs.
in PoE, any mob can drop the best item ever. In an MMO, thats not possible. you have to do certain content and kill certain bosses (raids etc). and those bosses have fixed loot-tables.

all other mobs in an MMO are mostly just for grinding XP, reputation or crafting mats.

I've played just about every MMO out there, you get loot by killing things in just about all of them.

You more than likely havnt played any if you think that's not the case.

Oh as for your edit, in Guild Wars 2 you can get max stat loot drop from any mob in the game, so there's your idiot logic debunked.

I'm going to have to assume that everyone arguing that this is an MMO must be children who are new to online gaming and think they can change the definitions of old terms.

- GGG does not agree with you.
- The very old actual definition does not agree with you.

You are wrong, and labeling this game an MMO when it isn't can only hurt it.
So when has the definition of MMO been anything other than 'Massively multiplayer online'?

If you think linking to that site, which has many non MMOs on it, proves anything, I fully believe those are the sounds you make.

Its actually never had that simple definition. I guess I shouldn't be surprised you don't know that.

Also, again, by that logic, every single online game would be an MMO. That obviously isn't the case.

Please stop acting as if there was an absolut definition of MMO, Captain Assburger. Apparently, Steam thinks PoE is an MMO and one can definitely find one or two reasons how they came up with that. This isn't science, people can have different opinions.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
People just hate the word MMO because they hate WoW and the like. People need to drop the stigma around the MMO word. MMO isn't only about WoW/EQ clones or open/non instanced worlds.

To me it's a MMO because you have to play online, your character is stored on their servers. You can instantly play or trade with anyone playing the game in the same league, forming a massive community. You cannot host the game or play offline.

Here's an example: Minecraft. Minecraft isn't an MMO, but it can be made an MMO. Someone can host servers of Minecraft and run it like an MMO.
If I needed to pin-point a definition on MMO I would probably use the socializing features in-game as an indicator. With the coming Guilds in the Release Patch PoE certainly takes advantage of socializing features and its effects on player motivation and long-term binding of customers.
