So, Blizz has the balls to remove AH...

You are a little harsh aren't you?

If the "completely worthless" company didn't exist in the first place there probably wouldn't be POE there right now, nor any other rpg similar to diablo.

Blizz did the start. Others did it better. That's just how competition works. And the customers will switch between companies because for them it is just a name. What counts is gameplay/fun itself isn't it? POE offers a huge amount of diversity, but lacks the graphics and the fluency d3 and suffers from desync and bad RNG (I don't wanna get started what d3 lacks right now...)

If the d3 expansion will fix all the problems you will probably play the game. But if poe 1.0 is released that might even be more interesting. For someone who likes complexity poe will probably be always the favourite between the two, simply because of all the options to customize your character. It also feels scarier with the random dmg spikes of some of the mobs, but that's necessary to keep up players' drive and excitement. If you just facerolled through the content you probably wouldn't be happy either. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be any easy mobs inbetween for chillax though ;)

D3 was my first game of the genre. I got it from world of warcraft annual pass.

Believe it or not, you were part of the main target market for Diablo 3. I think Blizzard realised fairly early that they'd lost the old Diablo fans (through a mixture of the AH and certain other mechanics, not to mention most old Diablo fans haven't forgotten Blizzard North), and instead crafted a Diablo game that in a lot of ways wouldn't be too unfamiliar or alienating for their current massive player base, being WoW players who likely never took part in the original ARPG surge of Diablo 1 and 2. When I saw Blizzard was offering free Diablo 3 access to hefty WoW subscribers, two of my suspicions were confirmed:

1) The target market for the long-awaited third Diablo game wasn't going to be those who waited for it

and

2) If Blizzard were 'giving' away copies of the game with WoW subscriptions, they planned to make their money off these people through the RMAH -- although for a little while I was able to see 'free D3 to our loyal WoW players' as a gesture of thanks. For a little while...

With that in mind, I've a query for you: did you use the RMAH at all? Not the AH -- I think anyone who played Diablo 3 did that at some point. Feel free not to answer if that's too personal a question.

On lighter notes, I'm glad you've found a game you like and thank you so much on behalf of GGG for your generous support.

Actually yes, I did use the RMAH, but not in a way you would think. When the RMAH first opened, I sold a few items for 3-30$ a piece and bought other pieces with that same money. I never actually put my own money into it. Then my graphics card died. I played D3 on a PoS laptop that had to be plugged in at all times, graphics on low, and it still over heated and turned off. I put up with that til I sold enough shit to buy a graphics card (130$ one) to repair my desktop. After that, I didn't use the RMAH anymore and didn't really play D3 anymore either.

I don't have a lot of money to spend. My Divine pack? I saved for it. I would LOVE to go eternal and design a unique. If I had the cash (even with payment system) I would buy it in a heartbeat, but I just don't have it to spend.

I know blizzard made some money off me using the RMAH by getting cuts of the profit, but in reality, I used them far more than they used me. I didn't buy the game and the AH cuts they got didn't equal the price of the game. I'm the guy they HOPED to make money off of, but really didn't work out in their favor.

D3 is a pile of shit AH or not. Its dumbed down so much you don't even have to use you brain to play it just smash random buttons
Why do any of you even care what anybody else says on these forums? The only words you should care about are those by GGG!

All praise be to GGG!

Thanks for that great answer. It's pretty much what I expected, actually. WoW players, and MMO folks in general, are quite adept at 'not paying' for their gaming, usually through both buying and selling -- Eve Online, for example, allows you to buy your subscription with in-game currency if you're good enough at raising it.

They did make their little cut off you, but on the other hand, I'm going to assume you actually did pay for your WoW subscriptions over the years, so the 'using' is still somewhat mutual.

So, following on: would you have found PoE is your computer hadn't crapped out? Were you, in essence, a happy D3 player?

I would have continued paying for my WoW subscription regardless of D3. My decision to get the annual pass was for the Guaranteed beta access. Of course, I was in the very last wave of invites >.<. I only recently dropped my subscription this past summer in June. I've always liked raiding in WoW, so it was a no brainer to get the pass. I had no intention of quitting at the time.

I found PoE through watching Kripp's stream. Imagine that. If I was still a happy D3 player, I would still be playing D3. I like challenges even if my playing skill isn't on a level I'd like to think sometimes. D3 became too easy and numb feeling that I couldn't play for more than an hour without logging out of boredom.

In PoE, I play an evasion based character that does a lot of kiting. Kiting is something that keeps me entertained because if I just stand there, I can and will die. D3 on the other hand, was "I gotta get to the next pack before my damage aura falls off because getting it back up is annoying." I have no fear of dying. Sure, I didn't play on Monster level 10, but lets be honest. Giving mobs 1000x more health doesn't make it harder. Just more time consuming which becomes even more boring to withstand.

My ideal of what I want to be when I play a game just never seems to fall into the Overpowered category. I'm not going to hate on dual totem, but we both know it has very good advantages.

There are a few things I look at when I make a character and with D3, the options aren't that plentiful. I have to basically pick and choose a poison versus having it all. While I am still on a search for the build I think is for me, I think I have a lot more say in what I can fit into a build.

For example, Movement speed. The faster I can move, the better. My ele hit ranger has 26% movement speed. It felt really fast moving compared to my other characters and now I'm addicted to it. So I made a character with 48% movement speed atm. I can't go from the 48% to 26% without feeling sluggish. I don't play the 48% dude that much however due to being A. Lower level and B. His build isn't headed towards what I've decided I want anymore. D3 just doesn't have this amount of customization in it.

Bringing Difficulty into the mix, You currently give up a good bit of passives moving through the tree to grab movement speed. Going CI practically isn't a solid decision just due to how many points you spend on the agility side without even being near things like Unwavering stance and I'm okay with that.

There are of course other things, like eye candy that I also care about. I personally loved the look of tier sets in D3, but not that everyone looked the same (because of everyone wanting same stats, but because everyone liked the look). While I honestly prefer the cartoony look, I like that I don't look like everyone else. This is also a reason why I don't plan to use ele hit in the future. It's just not that visually appealing.

In essence, I am fully prepared to give up beneficial stats to:

A. Fit my personal gameplay desires
B. Look visually appealing
C. Be different from everyone else

I'm incredibly happy with the changes coming to D3 with 2.0 and RoS. If even half of the leaks (non official) stuff comes true than D3 will be an amazing experience.

What I'm even happier about is the fact that now I won't just have PoE to satisfy my aRPG needs, I'll be able to switch back and forth and enjoy both games to the full.

Cheers.

Cheers for the response. I agree regarding movement speed: I have a 56% movement speed dagger Shadow who actually relies on his basic speed as a form of defence. It's surprisingly effective when combined with temporal chains and other crowd control techniques.

So what I glean from that is that while you typically avoid (coincidentally) the 'overpowered' builds, most builds in D3 ended up there anyway? I never made it past level 14, so I'm asking in earnest here. I know there were underpowered D3 builds -- I couldn't for the life of me do a true melee wizard, and melee Demon Hunter was almost as frustrating -- but I take it that if you stuck within your class's boundaries, the end result was still pretty much one of 'easy/boring'?

Crap, that's another question. Sorry. I said the last one was the last one. I'm just musing at this point. Thanks again for your time. This has been really handy.

Pretty much with any ability if you had really good gear, it would kill anything. To me, there is nothing in D3 that isn't viable. With enough gear, all of it is viable. That is due to "We don't want to nerf any skills, so we will buff everything else instead" attitude they had with the game while mobs on the other hand that had "Too many complaints" were nerfed. Which is cool when you like Spell A when everyone use uses Spell B. At some point though, No matter what you do, it all feels the same. No matter what spell I pick, it 1 shots the mob will slowly kill the excitement of playing when combined with always fighting in the same place.

Too many people look at what is the most efficient and label it "viable" and anything short of keeping up is automatically underpowered or "not viable". Don't get me wrong, fighting in D3 was fun because the combat felt so smooth. It's just wasn't enough to keep me there. I'm sure they have/will fix a lot of the things I don't like about D3. After all, blizzard is excellent at taking things from other games an incorporating it into their game. I just don't feel the need to swap back to D3 when there is so much about PoE that I like.

I don't want to play a game that babysits me and makes sure I am able to do everything. Players should run into challenges, rise and fall, but in the end learn and move forward stronger than before. Blizzard games don't have that quality. They will make sure you can't fail so that you feel good about playing. That's just not something I am interested in once the "newness" of a game wears off.

this is the answer!!

orb of fusing - gives a chance to add a link between sockets without removing existing links.

jewlers orb - gives a chance to add a socket/reroll color of sockets to an item without removing existing sockets
