Whats the Purpose of Garbage Uniques?

1) Not everyone can afford 6-linked Searing Touch (imagine, there are such players)
2) Heatshiver gives BOTH bonuses to Discharge (cause D is fire & ice gem at the time)
And what benefit from staff? Oh, burning? Just because almighty-kripp-master made build with Searing and all crowd just mindlessly copied it?
3) You mentioned about 'can use weapon" but didn't developed this thought. Strange.
Yes, you can use not only weapon but shield also.
Hence, survivability is greatly increasing despite this ridiculous "ooh, -18 to resistance"

As i said, if you can't figure out "how to use" item - this doesn't mean it's garbage, it's you that can't come up with good ideas. \o_o


few facts:

enduring cry discharge is easiest to sustain - there is no way to reliably generate power charges on demand and generating frenzy charges with frenzy is troublesome without quill rain (tried that too). thats why mid-level players prefer burning discharge because it works with any gear and has excellent Searing Touch to support it. Crit-based discharge requires crit gear and uniques. it is expensive.

Searing Touch not only increases burning but also spell dmg and cast speed - both are huge

Ability to use weapon+shield with helmet that directly dips into survivability.. yeah right. go for it. Also - +1 to melee gems sux. if that +4% phys dmg is so important to you then you are doing something wrong. Viper Strike and Ele Hit both deal low dmg at low lvls and +1 means little with them then. and there is no chance that youd ever use this helmet in merciless as it is suicide with these stats

also - big mouth show us your 4L Heatshiver, show us how YOU use it. because everyone is a great theorycrafter trying to prove this item is useful yet noone ever bothered to 4Link (that is spend currency) it and use it.

noone here claims that there are only 'garbage' and 'great' uniques

there are 'garbage' 'good' and 'great/op' uniques

ungil's, auramarvox (?) etc are good uniques - nothing great about them, but interesting and with a twist. there are many 'good' uniques that are not powerful, but people use them and like them

this is not great but this is mid-lvl 'all good, no bad' for EK builds and i like it on my EK witch

what some people here try to deny (some vigorously) is that there are numerous 'garbage' uniques. Heatshiver is one - item that has nice bonus +1cold/fire + 60%mana.reg but has terribad drawback and in reality does not benefit melee nor casters. people are saying 'try this try that' yet noone seems to have made it work. because some items wont work - these are simply garbage, broken trash items that should be tweaked to be viable

you can deny it and tell other funny stories about how certain items are good - but put your mouth where your money is and do it - make a build around Heatshiver that makes sense (of not maps viable because this wont work for sure).

or make maps viable Hyri' Ire build - just try if you dare. this is top-tier EV unique that has EV value of 55lvl armor and is a keystone carrier and bad at that. wow, amazing, let me gimp myself in style! just look at it:




and no, using them as skins is a pathetic band-aid solution that solves nothing and is incredibly stupid to even mention

Some people do play more than one character. Sometimes, finding an interesting low-level unique can be what makes someone decide to try a new character in the first place.

Your point has merit, but I dont think that was the intended by BroLaz or even GGG. Head to the median XL forums or search his profile history here and you can find all sorts nuggets of insight.

I am of the understanding that crap uniques are for the lower levels and more interesting during races. But I don't understand then why I have to loot them on my lv86 main char?

bad argument. rares drop all the time.

if uniques drop all the time like in diablo 3 did with legendary then you might have a sound one.

because if you didnt there wouldnt be any 6l searing touches
so you guys never found a sigeons or a nighsmoke belt in a hell ballrun ?...yeah right

@ op seriously if you havent figured out that every unique in this game is worth an alch or fuse at least you shouldnt be allowed to complain

heatshiver along with lightbane rainment are two items that i simply cannot fathom how they got into the game at all

Queens Decree is a good summoner item - but because you forgo both own defence and Necro Aegis - you need 5Link minimum to somehow balance it out

using Queens Decree 'just because i want to' will get you or your minions killed FAST

build with Crown of Thorns? just play up to lvl 65 without a helmet - thats the same thing

6-L searing touch? REALLY? To have 6 links, Searing touch should have 50+ itemlevel (essentially it should be compared with 50+level items) Most new players can barely afford 4-L searing touch!

Spelldamage on decent searing touch is quite on par with decent spelldamage weapon+shield for 20 level. As for burn... i doubt it's useful at early levels.

And yes, shield can provide resists, block, hp...

Heatshiver provides good benefit for discharge - 60% mana regen and +2 levels. Sure, there are some cons (reduced res) - unique is perfectly balanced. Is it usegul for endgame? Obviously, it isnt, and that's OK (low-level items shouldnt be great for endgame, except for some unique builds). Is it useful for leveling? It definetely IS! You discharge will hit MUCH harder.

Queen's decree - an excellent leveling weapon for summoner. It even has some potential for endgame (if 6-L), though, downsides are great, too.

Crown of thorns - i bet, you never tried equipping it at level 1. Every enemy who hits you, dies (especially good if combined with other low-level thorn items and bramblejack). Also, it could be used to enable Pain Attunement for low-life leveling chars, if they have no access to keystone yet. Useless unique? No, it isnt.
