Whats the point of playing hardcore?

I play HC/Onslaught because if I couldn't permadie then the game would only be about grinding.
Now it's about grinding AND not dying, keeps me a bit more entertained. Every now and then you get burst down to 10% or less HP. That feeling you get, that's why I play.

I have never and will never alt-f4 out of any situation, I would feel like too much of a coward. If the plan was to never permadie, might as well play softcore.

^ This.

Hardcore has the highest highs and the lowest lows.

It is a completely different game. There is no way to explain it to someone that has not played it.

Whenever anyone dies in a hardcore party, there is always a moment of silence. A quiet reflection on that players work and effort, but underneath, the survivors are just glad it wasn't their turn.

Hardcore adds an entirely new dimension to the game. If it wasn't for hardcore, many of these games would fail to interest me for more than a single play-through.

i dont know who that guy is but if he had 7k ES and he gets hit for 1k+ that means the mob just needs 7hits to kill him. and since its merc/maps the mob probably shots 3-5 fire balls =3-5k dmg per hit.

he could have died within 3sec.

(not counting with crits and burn effect.)

It's actually shame the top players are rejecting to take the risk on Onslaught.

There is desync which kinda make this excusable.
However building the char for CI and having 10K+ energy shield is not any interesting.

The problem is that the game is not offering that much space for skilled players to survive even with low HP builds on Onslaught. Desync, not many life saver skills, etc...
The high level map challenges are also made with assumption you have quite a lot of HP or ES - 4K+ HP.

However I'm still playing evasion based ranger - ranged. Thou died a lot on Onslaught.
MY CHALLENGES ARE DONE ON HC, IT'S NOT SC GUYS!
Nothing to do about e-peen...

It's about the whole economy and enjoyment of the game. In Noobcore (softcore), as soon as someone gets a good weapon, that weapon is in the game forever and passed around like a dirty whore! The value of drops is horrid in that league...

In Hardcore, you have people dying with some really good gear and that stuff is gone forever. They have to start over with whatever they saved to the side...

Also, noobcore is all about who who build the fastest AOE killing build possible... Hardcore is about balancing the ability to survive with the ability to kill.

And, simply put, how often do you see streamers in Noobcore? No one wants to want someone with godmode steamrolling content mindlessly all day long. It's like Nascar (only not as lame), you watch it for the crash (deaths) not the actual gameplay ;)

Personal choice. I get more enjoyment out of playing HC than I do out of SC. I like the consequences of my actions and choices. HC weeds out bad choices, where SC lets you linger with them for weeks until you finally give up in frustration. HC has taught me how to deal with desync instead of just complaining about it like many do. It wasn't until recently when I was playing that I noticed I was shift-clicking to attack by default and only using "regular" attacks when I knew I was in sync. I tried playing without shift-click and sure enough, I started getting that desync problems that people are so bent out of shape about. You really can learn to play in ways that cause desync and ways that avoid it.

Heh, last time that happened, I tried to give away my stuff and not a single person was interested. I ended up just deleting the character along with some fairly decent gear.

Ah well, it's their economy that's broken, not hardcore/onslaught. :D

I play HC like a rogue-like game. If I die, that's it. I don't alt+f4.
I have played a lot of grindish games since d2, I used to love grinding, now I'm not interested in getting nice gears or leveling like I used to be. I like PoE because it's not all about grinding. Players can also play like I do, races for example. I think this is one of the big play-style that GGG offers.
The streamer likes to survive, avoiding death at any cost, that's cool, that's his play style who cares. Sure HC might require some knowledge if you want to survive, still that doesn't mean HC players got better skill than SC players. Either SC players and HC players don't like to die. It's just that what you demand to death.
Some people play hc just to call sc players scrubs. This make them feel superior or better

Others play hc for economy. Then they realize that hc has 50 players and trading takes 20times more time

Others play self found in hc with no alt-f4, which makes a fun gameplay

So I remember watching etup on stream, I think it was his ft / dd build. He was doing crem boss, no crazy mods. He had ~7-8k es iirc, and as soon as the fireball volley hit him for 1k es or so, he gave up and quit... Wtf? He even had ruby flask in his belt, and just quit like that. When I told him about it on stream, he made up some bs about it being a -res map, and all his fanboys jumped on the bandwagon too. It clearly wasnt a -max res map. Then a lot of these players, not saying all of them, but a lot of them, start brandishing scrubcore comments wherever they go. Look in the mirror?

I thought a hardcore player would try at least a ruby flask / rathpith tactic before totally quitting. Its not like the map had -res, extra dmg or boss dmg.

I thought the point of hardcore was to crush your enemies before you and hear the lamentation of their (demon?) women. Regardless of how hard the challenge is. And to say you did that within an inch of your life. The thrill of battle, the blood and adrenaline pumping to save a bunch of pixels, etc. Not to alt-f4 as soon as anything hits you for more than 100 hp / es. How truly lame. THey should change the name of hardcore to 'alt-f-core'.

Pathetic! You cry about a single players action and generalize it to a whole league. Wow, I'm really sad for you.
