Whats the point of playing hardcore?

So I remember watching etup on stream, I think it was his ft / dd build. He was doing crem boss, no crazy mods. He had ~7-8k es iirc, and as soon as the fireball volley hit him for 1k es or so, he gave up and quit... Wtf? He even had ruby flask in his belt, and just quit like that. When I told him about it on stream, he made up some bs about it being a -res map, and all his fanboys jumped on the bandwagon too. It clearly wasnt a -max res map. Then a lot of these players, not saying all of them, but a lot of them, start brandishing scrubcore comments wherever they go. Look in the mirror?

I thought a hardcore player would try at least a ruby flask / rathpith tactic before totally quitting. Its not like the map had -res, extra dmg or boss dmg.

I thought the point of hardcore was to crush your enemies before you and hear the lamentation of their (demon?) women. Regardless of how hard the challenge is. And to say you did that within an inch of your life. The thrill of battle, the blood and adrenaline pumping to save a bunch of pixels, etc. Not to alt-f4 as soon as anything hits you for more than 100 hp / es. How truly lame. THey should change the name of hardcore to 'alt-f-core'.

Remind me, did you get 3 lives in 'Super Mario Brothers'? If so, my memory tells me that 'Tetris' was way more hardcore because after getting to level 76565 after 18656586 hours and failing.......equaled start over from scratch.

I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around how much I enjoyed those games.

U nailed it urself here.

POE and most of the present MMOs arent enjoyable anymore. They feel like work.
The fear of being moved to standard *shudder*.
I play HC/Onslaught because if I couldn't permadie then the game would only be about grinding.
Now it's about grinding AND not dying, keeps me a bit more entertained. Every now and then you get burst down to 10% or less HP. That feeling you get, that's why I play.

I have never and will never alt-f4 out of any situation, I would feel like too much of a coward. If the plan was to never permadie, might as well play softcore.

Oh well, people can play how they want, doesn't affect me a bit.
The hardcore option is there and I'm grateful for it.

Because I find leagues without permadeath to be boring.

If there's no real tangible risk, there's no excitement. Losing a bit of experience would never be able to get my adrenaline going.

Having your geared character get moved to the casual league...Now THAT is scary.
Stop with these threads already. It's the same as when people who play hardcore call standard scrubcore. It's e-peen stroking and it doesn't help anyone. Play the game how you want.
Anarchy/Onslaught T shirt

i love the fear of loosing a char in hc/ons too. But on the otherhand sometimes i just like the progress, without the fear to start a new char because of a desync.

So i play hc/ons and anarchy/standard :)

cheers,
The elements are my allies.
The dead are my servants.
And fear...will be my closest friend.

Meh if it was the threat of dying that turns people on, just roll a Shadow flicker build and try some phys reflect maps :D

You'll see most HC players stack more survivability gear and passives than softcore, there's no reason to take unnecessary risks after all. Fact of the matter is this guy obviously thought he was taking a big risk.

Personally I don't think I could ever play hardcore properly as I would be way too attached to the char/gear to ever play them properly and would end up doing the sort of stuff this guy did.

In races though you go full out and if you die then oh well. Humans are strange sometimes.
