Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

295pages, owell I bet its all been said but anyways.
In the highend parties I played with in PoE there were always a consensus that whoever had the name on an item had the right to it, and everyone else who picked it up got kicked. This was just loot distribution managed by the players because the game doesnt support it, so obviously cutthroat is not what everyone wants. Low end / levelling parties who usually didnt play by thise "rules", everyone just stopped doing anything for x seconds whenever something nice dropped, while clicking like mad and whoever was the lucky or low latency got it. Also with the silly friendly targeting you refuse to fix (remove), you can half the times block the player whose name is on an item, by standing on top of it and making it more likely you will get it. So cutthroath my a..bracadabra :P Anyways, you learn to workaround it as I mentioned, but still think it should just be handled by the game itself instead of the players. |

I will say this. This thread is "exactly" 2 years old today(wow) and the devs have stuck to their guns even tho many of us feel this should be changed, including me. I give them props, they have a vision and nothing can change that vision unless is was a real problem, and this loot stuff is probably at the bottom of their list of problems. They prob don't even view this as a problem.

Doing a test run with my OB group through acts 1 and 2, it's very apparent that the game needs loot options. For us, it's a FFA option. We gladly share drops as people need them, but it's annoying for someone that needs the drop to wait for the timer to expire. It's also annoying to have the person that doesn't want the item to pick it up then drop it.
Give us the option to make it FFA. Give those that want a longer timer the option to make it longer (for ranged chars the timer simply isn't enough to counter distance + lag). Heck, give those that want instanced loot the option. Or at least the first two. Please? How Fusings Work: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/38585/page/3#p1451934

Hammer how about it's just a built in feature. Private party (one you actively party with people by inviting them) the timer is low/non-existent but in public parties the timer is longer?
I don't like the idea of switching a toggle on or off but something built in seems to be a good idea. Finished 17th in Rampage - Peaked at 11th
Finished 18th in Torment/Bloodline 1mo Race - peaked at 9th Null's Inclination Build 2.1.0 - https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1559063 Summon Skeleton 1.3 - https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1219856 |

This is brilliant. Like, this idea is pretty well perfect. Distance from item = time allotted to grab is perfect, balanced, and still keeps it exciting.
I think it would also be cool to make it an option in custom server creation if possible. |

" Your first statement is pretty dogmatic (better word is dismissive) and I think it's counter to the culture the devs themselves have created and which they want to promote. For instance, I think people who are used to very communicative devs would hope that a thread which has reached almost 300 pages without much dev interaction indicates the topic is important to the player base and therefore may deserve more attention from the devs. However, your latter statement is 100% correct. POE Serenity Prayer: GGG, grant me the serenity to accept the RNG I cannot change, the courage to challenge any unbalanced content, and the wisdom to avoid the forums. Mad: "Oh, it's simple and if you insist... I just think you're a dick. That's all." QFT: 4TRY4C&4NO Last edited by Phaeded#4782 on Jan 22, 2013, 4:18:44 AM

" Good thing I'm not a dev. Maybe I can say the things they won't. Either way, yes I was a bit dismissive. Sorry about that. Thing is, this thread is the exception to the rule, the standard. If anything, I think the devs are sometimes TOO communicative and spoil the beta testers/players quite a lot. They start to expect answers for every question, which just can't happen. My personal opinion of this thread is it's about a year past its use-by date. Chris made it asking for loot options and opinions, and clearly got plenty of feedback. More than a year after the thread's creation, GGG makes some pretty dramatic changes to the way loot works, with the timed allocation, the duration of which depends on the distance from the player when the item drops. As far as I'm concerned, if GGG does not respond after that change, then it's done. Everything after that is just piss and wind, to be perfectly blunt. I have no stake in this. I play solo or with friends. I encourage all and any discussion provided it remain civil. But my role here, from this point on, is purely that of moderator. I hope I won't be called in too often. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

" So why wasn't this thread locked and every other thread on looting, with a statement from GGG that looting was implemented as intended and that there would never be a change on looting again? |

So i read what charan wrote and it struck me as strange too.
---------------------- Logic method 1: GGG has a clear idea and wont budge much on it. Thus this thread has no need to exist. Logic method 2: GGG is intending to have loot style as optional choosing. Or that the looting method isnt set in stone, and is open for debate. Thus this thread deserves to exist. Logic method 3: GGG has same stance as logic method 1, but want all vocal critique concentrated to 1 thread to falsely make forum posters believe their discussions matter in the design of crucial game elements. ---------------------- I would like to think its Logic method 2. As method 3 is just... a not-nice style of community management. As much as i respect GGG design choice, i also feel its missing the entire purpose with this game. To have *fun* with *other people*. I can solo in a non-online game, i can play that and edit that as much as i want to (Torchlight 2 in this case) and have fun. And as to why i want to play PoE, its because of the option to play with other humans. However, as i see it (and many others) FFA loot has serious flaws. So does the current timer. And at the end of each line of thoughts i have on FFA or Short-Timer-FFA loot. It ends with this: "Im getting annoyed, and i wanna quit playing". And i know im not alone on this anti-fun-feeling. |
