Oh, I didn't know players lose EXP when a character dies. This is so stupid and old-school. In other words, it takes away part of your progression. I don't play games when players lose EXP. It shows a lack of innovation when it comes to punishment. Let's see how early access will be ended.
But I didn't realise that some players still exist and like this mechanic.
I do like this mechanic. In poe1 i based many maps with my face losing all 6 portals and and losing literally all my xp from 60%.
In that game it wasnt bad enough or i didnt care because i could pay ppl with my currency to level me in 5 ways. If that mechanic didnt exist i wouldnt be doing it.
What do you think is a good alternative punishment? A stacking reduced loot debuff? Then they just do easier map to get rid of it. Not a solution.
I think it is the best solution there is ATM other than getting to 100 irrelevant like in Elden Ring.

So you prefer progress backwards rather than forward. Good luck with that. I don't see a reason players should lose EXP; it is already lost time if the character dies. I hope this answers your question.

To start, I've been an avid and consistent player of PoE for years. I, like everyone, was excited for PoE2. When they announced the one portal mechanic I immediately knew that it was a bad idea, but I was open to giving it a shot.
I've now played PoE2's endgame enough to give my opinion. It is an absolutely horrible decision, and should be reversed immediately for the future of PoE2. The old saying here is never so true, if it aint broke, dont fix it. PoE1 had the six portal mechanic, it was balanced, but fair in my opinion. It didnt give the solo player too many chances to attempt a map/boss but it also limited party play in a way that felt fair. It was balanced, it was effective, it felt right. The penalty for losing experience at super high levels felt brutal, but was acceptable.
Now I admit, in PoE1 being able to zerg bosses was too much. PoE2 fixed this, resetting map boss and pinnacle boss HP is the right call. If you cant complete the boss all in one go, you shouldn't beat it. But the soul crushing penalty of losing not only the map progression, the boss attempt, the exp, the map modifiers, etc all in one go is too much. It's too far. You wanted to bring in a wider audience, of all the various early access things affecting PoE2, they can be fixed. This design decision and commitment to it, cannot.
New players that are struggling through the campaign and learning the game for the first time are not used to PoE. The growing pains are harsh, but they can get over it. Once they get to endgame however that will all change, I promise you. Let's face it GGG, you've never been able to fully eliminate the random, out of nowhere, bs deaths. Us dedicated PoE players can forgive that, and truthfully dont expect you to ever be able to eliminate it. And thats okay. The game istself fantastic and we can get over it. However, with PoE2's decision to unnecessarily punish the players for this shortcoming is something that cannot be overcome, no matter how much you think it's possible.
To the people, and design engineers at GGG continuing to defend this one portal idea. You're wrong. Listen, you're wrong. Swallow your pride, admit your mistake, and move on. To the white knight forum warriors that try and defend it, you're wrong, no matter how much get gud you try and spew.
I hope, for the sake of this game, you fix this as soon as possible. I love GGG, I think they're the best developers that exist, but they can make mistakes. It's okay, us PoE vets will forgive you. I promise you, the uninitiated will not, and move on.
Revert it back to the six portals before it's too late.
Here's my 1.5 cents to your well laid out points, from a 'stuck in act 3' player
I can't buy a bow as no one wants to trade because they are in monster marathon time maps and they can't leave to sell me
a 1 exalted Bow

If the game is balanced around trading, that's a fail.
It can't be balanced around currency drops, because in Act 3 I'm getting very little currency drops. Level 47, went back in time. Stuck at the Viper. Can't kill Magma boss either because my dps is lacking.
first bow I ever hit with an exalt. 5 light radius. 2nd exalt on a different bow. 5 light radius....
My current cultist bow is just a couple dps better than the zealot bow I 6 stat rolled (that's transmute, aug, regal and 3 exalts). The zealot bow would be a tiny bit better, but I can't get blacksmith whetstones for the life of me.
After I realized the zealot bow is no better than the cultist bow, I rolled another and it was garbage. I spend all my currency rolling garbage to be left with no currency, spend all the gold buying randoms from vendors that turn out to be garbage and the only way for me to advance is trade?
1 portal does not make that easier.
(i do enjoy this game, but it's POE 1.5, not 2)

Loving one portal. It makes boss drops so much more valuable. Once you practice (instead of making long winded posts over and over ) and learn the mechanics you will also be in a good mood that your drop is valuable.

My take is 1 portal for maps
6 portals WITH RESETTING BOSSES for for Realmgate content
So people can actually learn the boss mechanics.
My solution to killing realmgate content was to just kill it within 3 seconds - then again my build is working out fine and has glasscannon as defensive layer.
I actually did hope that poe2 would disincentivize that style by tuning down damage making fights last longer - they didn't.
The current way realmgate content works is that a death is really punishing with a high chance of you having learned nothing and makes improving pretty hard.
I don't want the 6portal defensive layer back - at the same time I want to be given the chance to actually improve in boss fights, which with 1 portal just sucks.

+1
Without 6 portals there is no way I play poe2 nor I buy any supporter pack
+1
I barely played PoE 1, so was ignorant that a major game still used such ridiculous mechanics. They remind me of the old-school, drop-your-equipment on death effects from early MMOs. Just as I would never play one of those, there is no chance I'll keep playing PoE 2 after early access if there isn't some change to the one-portal and XP loss system. To be honest, I'm not a fan of the compromise positions either - "Well, maybe one portal but no XP loss, or vice versa." Why have bad design* in 2024? All of the goals of punishing design can be reframed positively, and the masochists who claim to like the current system still get to stay ahead and tell everyone else to git gud. Meanwhile, those of us who don't like being punished while gaming are more likely to play and dump money into the store.
*Just my opinion, of course.

T17 maps as melee in poe1 already felt like its just too much. I've often felt like im just suffering playing and there was more frustration then having fun. Even with almost top gear, with a perfect crafted 2h axe it still wasnt a breeze. 9000 layers of defence, more 'playing' outside of the game then actual gameplay and with proper mods still getting one shotted from time to time. So many design choices like on death effects, untargetable/unkillable shit following you made the game annoying rather then enjoyable.
We dont know how it will be in poe2 since no one is running in top gear yet but you can clearly see they took all these worst mechanics and implemented them too. Having only one life on top of that makes the game a slog.
I really understand that they dont want autoplay zoom zoom 3 screen clearing chars (whats wrong with them? :P) but will never understand why it feels like they want people to suffer instead of having fun. There are masochists who like to be treated that way but i bet theire the minority. Such gameplay model could work in some indie game so 'content creators' could brag on yt but here is just fails.

Another get good guy, if you havent read my other posts I can understand your comment. My point has nothing to do with me. Just because I personally can overcome it doesnt mean it's a good design mechanic.
One portal is going to drive away new PoE players. I have many friends trying PoE for the very first time. Some tried PoE1 in the past but could never get past the learning curve. All of them are currently struggling through the acts but are having fun and still going. They have no clue what's waiting for them at the end of their journey. When they run into this in the endgame I dont see any of them continuing.
PoE2 was supposed to bring in a whole new playerbase and it succeeded, however that goal is going to run into a brick wall unless this is reversed.
