cannot use the same support gem twice in different spells

Limiting support gems to one per skill does improve build diversity quite a lot and it is great. You no longer have to socket every single skill with brutality and increased melee damage and whatever, and now we instead get to focus on which skill we want to make our main ability. Do you prefer rolling slam to have more damage or perhaps you want to focus your character on leap slam or supercharged slam?

One of the best decisions in Path of Exile 2 by far, we just gotta wait for some more support gems to arrive.
If we're unable to use these support gems twice, what should I do with my duplicate gems?
It means it has to be considered and a choice but you can swap with no cost unlike respeccing points...
I don't know guys, it's a tough issue, let us spam whatever support gems we want in every skill and you end up with OP builds that are even harder to balance, it's kind of nice deciding which skill gets what support gems. Maybe some gems can be used 2-3 times ?

GGG MAJOR FAIL ON THIS ONE!
like really? i cand have scatter shot on my basic attack AND my skeletal sniper?
then buff the skills since i am FORCED to only have ONE. how does this help "build diversity and freedom for building?!?!" you are literally LIMITING our class building. this is honestly absolute dog doodoo please let us equip it as much as we want as long as its not on the same skill there shouldnt be an issue
I'm finding that I don't have enough interesting or useful support gems for all of my skills, and most are still only 3 or 4 links. I get the idea, and maybe it's just because it's still EA, but if diversity is the goal we need more options.
100% agreed, this limitation is one of my biggest gripes with the game right now, and one of the reasons I can't recommend this game to any of my friends or family.

The other biggest reasons are the despawning of items and the respawning of monsters on death. Map size issue is apparently being worked on with teleportation between waypoints, but for now that's also an issue. And they probably still need to increase the drop rate of items; without trading, it's all too common to go 20+ levels without a single weapon upgrade while progressing through the campaign, which is insane.
At the beginning I was also annoyed, but actually it makes sense and I don’t mind it anymore. I would have used the same gem in various skills but in this case I’m changing and reconsidering more other support skills.
As I expressed in another thread, this really saddens me. It makes it feel like a Diabloesque "restraint" where it limits one's own choices and build imagination (like something one would find in Diablo 3).

People defend it by saying it's "more interesting and allows for more choices".

More interesting for who, and how?

"I need some elemental penetration on this skill."
"You should use Elemental Focus instead, it's more interesting that way."

Since I cannot use some support gems on certain skills, it instead makes me skip using those skills entirely.
You have very well explained and I gree with this design.

Can someone explain what's the logic behind this decision ?

The logic is that they struggled to come up with different support gems because when anything can be socketed any amount of time, you end up like in PoE1 where 90% of skills use the same 10 support because that's the best thing to do. You got 100 support but only 10 are used 90% of the time, the remaining 10% are just for the little variation in skill innerworking.

For instance,
"Increased fire damage". why wouldn't you put this on all your fire spell?

If all fire skill end up with "Increased fire damage" as support, you might as well remove it and make it baseline. Repeat that for most damaging support (which were always the 3-4 first socket used in PoE1 for almost every single skill) and you end up with much less supports.

Then the same problem arises with utility support. If you don't need to invest that 3-4 socket into damaging support, then you can use utility. And again, most frost skill will use the same support, most fire too etc etc.

You end up where realistically you should include everything and only allow for 1-2 support with "weird unique effect". But that's not what they want.

So, in an interview, they explain that someone came up with this idea. "If the issue is that we socket the same things everywhere, why not add a limit of 1 support per build".

Then out of the sudden, +30% fire damage makes sens because it can only be used on a single skill. Same for some support.

Things like
+40% AoE
or
+50% AoE but induce a CD

also make sens because without the limitation, most of the time +40% AoE is better. But if there's a limitation then you can have "less good" support or more situational support.

The decision was made as to avoid PoE1 situation where your true "support choice" are 1 gem at best per 6L. You got no choice, you just pick whatever grants the most dmg.
