You don't have to lifetap it if you don't want to, I almost always take the life mastery to pay some of the cost with life anyway
On the new system you will, right now if you wear elreon mods and take the life cost your attack is pretty much free its gonna cost 20-30 next patch unless you take substantially more modifiers.

Does the concept of a straight giant defensive buff just seem too abstract of an idea for GGG? Do they like wasting time undoing one change by implementing another? Patches like this give the impression that POE1 is meant to die soon to make way for POE2 engagement.
I'm conflicted here on the one hand defenses on melee are a sore point and I'm inclined to agree to an extent. They certainly aren't solved.
On the other hand 5 or 6 endo charges is now what 20-24% less elemental dmg taken? that all melees can get. You most definitely don't NEED 10. that said Kaom's Signs are looking very buffed now.
Yeah I know things that can fall off or can be suppressed by an Archnem mod are not ideal defenses and supression is still mandatory in my view as well. But they also put something like 30% more flat life on gear slots and improved block.
We all know melee wont be meta after the dust settles, but is melee finally "fine" now? Don't know but its better than it was.
Pandering to players who don't want consequences for their mistakes is a perfect description of what went fundamentally wrong with D3 and 4.

this time: attack speed. typical melee build lost A LOT of attack speed. i doubt these % increases are enough to turn this entire change into more than 20% net buff. and im generous now.
loss of rage and berserk + protector is HUGE. that was a lot of attack speed, A LOT of it.
Because right side is never allowed to keep any defenses that would allow melee to actually play melee.
