Could you imagine if games like WoW had Exp loss and deleveling? Man I tell ya what, it would def. weed out shitty raid members real quick, because in most games raiding isn't hard at all. It's getting 10-20 idiots to listen.
Anyways, +1 to Exp loss, and yes, sometime I die and go wtf, but. Oh well, learn from your mistakes.
Edit: I'm also pretty sure you will be able to buy your own custom league at some point. So with that said, someone could make a Casualist League. x100% loot drops, No exp loss, free loot everytime you go to your Stash!
using FFXI as an example for experience loss is a ridiculous notion, especially considering how easy it was (Even by pre-abyssea standards) to get max level as compared to this game. Nowadays its a downright joke, since almost everyone runs around with Reraise 3 and only ends up losing 1% On death.
Lineage 1 perhaps is a more appropriate example of EXP loss on death. There you make around 1.5-2% an hour at higher levels if you're lucky. Deaths there cost 1% on some servers, and up to 5% on others, (Can buy back half of that). That being said.. Path of Exile is not "Difficult" Becuase of exp loss. There are a ton of ridiculous mechanics that don't make this game difficult, in some cases just annoying. Like when I can plow down 99% of a map, but a monster casts ONE spell and suddenly I one shot myself, even though I can't even see it. Or monsters who kill me and they arent even on my screen due to de-synch. All of these games in which a hefty exp penalty was assessed on death did NOT have these one-shot death mechanics and still involved skill to play.
The penalty needs to be 5%. At 79, I make maybe 3-4% a map (66-68, since i can never get higher level maps to drop than that). One death is equivalent to losing 4-5 maps, and all that time invested in them.
I'm not sure what FFXI you played, (pre-abyssea) Exp was not easy (dependant on Job). Abyssea made it a joke.(Took me a year and a half to hit 75 on my SMN, first Job, and I played everyday. I solo'ed BST and BLM from 1-75, as well as PUP.) In the time I could have hit 75 on XI I would have probably a good 1-2 lvl 100's on here, IF> POE is extremely easy to level in up to the point (heres the big thing!) WHERE CONTENT FALLS OFF! You have enough content to level to 70'ish withouth much trouble. You want to go further then that, by all means, grind it out. That is your choice however. To me the leveling process ends @70-75, after that I farm. I could careles if I level or not because the leveling process is over until content comes out that supports that leveling.

It's the only way to avoid the horrible late game. The only way. If you don't want to do this then PoE isn't for you, as it is, because right now the late game just isn't good enough to warrant playing imo.
I agreed 100% and it's what your forced to do. No maps, no currency, no gear drops. At L75 there's no reason to play when the level, XP and death penalty forced you to roll alts. There needs to be a balance, but when a company removes access to endgame for 70% of it's player base then good luck. Soft core should be enjoyable and balanced for casual players. I'm done with the game for the time being.

I agree, If GGG wants to actually make money on this game, they will figure it out. F2P games need to appeal to all groups of gamers.

Why not just create a third league with no penalty at all? Really what's the harm in having multiple options on how to play. Options are good thing imo.
What's the harm? No harm to those who think an entertainment product should have no soul. Cost/resource considerations aside, there's theoretically 'no harm' in changing all the [insert own example here] zerg from SC2 to fluffy bunnies that ADD health instead of taking it away because some people find the creator's version too scary; the 'harm' I see is that the creator's original version is utterly shat on and their creative vision is diluted to weak watered down urine. When I go to watch a video of the game online I will see fluffy bunnies shitting rainbows and buffing their 'enemy' and have NO IDEA what the original intent of the designer was. I won't see the game as challenging or interesting and I'd wonder what group of dickheads decided to make a game, call it 'hardcore', and make it total faceroll.
The developers have been absolutely clear about their vision for a game where, for once, we don't play do-gooder heroes out to save the world - it's about being completely out for yourself in a very unfair world. All the systems in the game support this approach - the original FFA loot system (also poisoned by casual whiners so far), the bandit PVP event, etc. etc. and the experience loss system.
/blather
In the end, I think GGG will be forced by their investors or whoever is actually keeping them afloat, to casualise the game some more so y'all may get your wish anyway. The way of the world is to expect something for little to no effort and without 'punishment' for mistakes. There are a MILLION games which do this for you - why make the few that try to be different, the same? Sad...
Why does a game have to only cater to a certain group of gamers? POE can VERY easily cater to everyone. They created all types of customs leagues for the races. Why not a league for people who simply want to face roll content. I don't see the harm. It's not like hardcore or default leagues would be affected at all.
Forza is a perfect example of a game that caters to all types of gamers. From my 5 year old nieces to my hardcore car enthusiast dad.
Catering to only a select group of gamers is not only bad business, but bad game design.

I have to say the exp loss is a little disheartening for me as well. The exp loss is disappointing as it ultimately limits the diversity a character can have. You have to fulfill many requirements in gear, passives, and skills to be viable. I would prefer making some build I found fun rather than spending most of my time meeting requirements demanded to not receive the exp penalty. I have to say, the most fun I have with a character is in normal where I can just be goofy if I want to and experiment or think of some theme build even if I know I won't take it to the higher difficulties.

95% of my deaths is due to desync so xD
I'm trying to level a multistrike cyclone right now and I am losing more than I gain at level 43 just because I end up in another room not hitting anything.

Would be nice to see that penalty gets smaller with lvl ... 15% on 80lvl and 15% on 60 lvl is completly different story.
Lets say that death = 30 min exp loss depending on lvl. It can be like 20% on 5x lvl but 0.1% on 80 lvl.

This game is not difficult, it's punishing. There's a difference.
Difficulty is derived from a situations that require a combination of reflexive skill, technical knowledge, and decision making.
In this game, all you have to do is take a handful of precautions and play a very specific way (stack health nodes, pull groups to thin them out, totem-scout, build around one or two incredibly powerful synergies). If you get lazy and try to cut corners (or if you forget for a moment to religiously follow the rules), the game punishes you by taking away one hour to one week worth of work.
This kind of gameplay isn't inherently rewarding.

I've been playing FFXI off and on for the last ten years.. I don't know why or how it took you a year and a half to get a level 75, but unless you were on a crappy server, or playing undesirable jobs that no one wanted to party with it should not have taken you so long. I got 1-75 on my BST in a matter of a month and a half, and 1-75 on my thief in 2 months. And using FFXI as your point is a bad example because today you can get 1-99 in a matter of 8 hours.
