Standard enjoyers?

I've rediscovered the joy of RPing in Standard. I'm currently playing a Daresso-based build, with the premise that Daresso and Merveil had another child, a son, whom Merveil ejected from her lair as a reminder of the man who had "betrayed her love." Sword and board Duelist/Champion, working up to using all the Daresso-themed Uniques (still need to level enough to use the Perseverance belt).

It's interesting trying to wrap my head around the mind of a man (more or less) who has, over the past couple hundred years, coalesced from a watery larva into a unique individual who, for a personality and knowledge, has had only his mother and father's latent experiences to draw upon. He has Daresso's drive for victory, and Merveil's hatred and anger to drive him. It's been fun imagining his interactions with the various NPCs throughout the acts, his struggle to control rage when frustrated by as small a thing as a trade transaction, and his growing desire to cultivate his own, unique identity.

I rationalize his access to Daresso's various gear by his ability, magnified after he killed Merveil and his two sisters, to command the creatures of wave and shore to seek them out for him. Otherwise, he seeks to overcome all challengers, and might even put behind him a secret apathy toward his own survival, not quite a death wish, so much as a lackadaisical attitude toward danger.

As for how he plays, it's been surprising how effective what might accurately be deemed a sub-optimal build has proven to be. It's certainly been fun to play, even for melee. And Standard has made it all possible. =^[.]^=

Not much of a minmaxer myself, but I do tend to enjoy Standard more in general. I like the part where there's always a Tabula waiting for me in Lioneye's Watch if I want to make a new character. Makes things so much easier than slugging through the campaign on a 4-link again.
It's almost like a comfy old sweater you love wearing, just kinda feels like home.

The end is nigh

I only play melee too, so it's many mirrors per character to get a defensive/offence balance I'm personally happy with. Or at least not awake at night trying to theory-craft. Current build is around 10 mirrors. It's nothing compared to a 3 mirror spell/bow/trap build for many, many reasons, but at least non-boneshatter melee can feel good in standard. Terrible by non-melee standards, but good by melee standards.

Pretty cool build.

I also mainly play melee in std going the min/max route with gear accumulated over 10 years of play. Main reason to play standard is time constraints and I feel like leagues are way too much pressure on div/h to reach a threshold where I would feel comfortable with a build in a league. There are patches were my PoB time exceeds my time spent in the game and i love the theory crafting.

To be fair Standard often seems tempting to me, but whenever I open it up and see gazillion temporary tabs from the previous leagues I lose all motivation because it would take several hours of clicking to clean them all.

I really wish they would add an option to just delete a temporary tab with all of the items in it.
have to say the GGG sucker punch roundhouse in form of exalted- div swap didnt help standard minmaxers.

hope it will be worth reactivating and updating my old cyclone phys impale maxblock tank.

Sounds exactly like me. Hours of time spent on PoB before any major purchase, because each purchase will involve so many other changes. I do play now since they seem to have fixed the 3.21.2 patch issues, though only for roughly an hour a week or so. Having to start again with an 8 month old is out of the question!

My build is ok. TBH I don't think i'll ever be completely happy with a build. Even something that can comfortably run wave 30 simu or insta phase/kill ubers. If there's a combination of affixes/mods/items/passives, etc that could see even a minor improvement. That build isn't done.

So, I think my goal in playing PoE is to drive myself insane.
I'm struggling to come up with new goals to keep me playing this game.

I wish they would open up bank accounts or bank characters so people like you and other similar can just donate all the items to another bank or your own bank with a simple click, even if you dont have time to do it, other people might enjoy just having items collecting or helping other with items so items never fully go to waste. Think of it as a homeless shelter RL where people can go to get free food and a bed, well many new players (isnt that what GGG try to accomplish? ; bring in new players to the game) would certainly enjoy any little extra help they could get. and it's true that most recommend play league, but for those who play on a more casual level or are new to this genre, it is actually a more difficult play level to play league (and the mechanics of a league) then play standard. I have many friends who just enjoy play poe like an ARPG that it is , similar to grim dawn or torchlight and don't mind which league they hop on as long they get to click their mouse and tap a few buttons to kill some monsters. (and find loot - whether it is in league or std).

I can relate to that. I have a Glacial Hammer pet build that i try to keep updated with pretty big investment its OK to play and any spell build would put it to shame with half the investment.
I really dislike that GGG removed the 30% extra range of Ancestors from Awakened Ancestrall Call in 3.15. I had to use around 13 tattoos with 0.1 meter range just to gain the range Glacial Hammer once had with the gem.

Honest question and no offense intended, why do the two of you continue to play melee, and melee only even, if you think that spells are so much better?
You are clearly way more into min maxing and getting the most out of your builds than i am. Playing something you think is shit doesn't really suit either of you, from my perspective anyway. So why? If you want to make the absolute god level uber build and that can only be done with spells, why not do it?
