Path of Exile 2.0 Should Have an Auction House
|
Auction house economies are boring. Id be happy with things as they are now, but instead of you having to do the trade yourself, people can come to your hideout and browse / buy everything you have for sale.
For me, having to stop what im doing and come back to trade is just a bad feeling, and as a result I have played SSF since it was an option. |

Hello everyone, I wanted to say thanks for all of the discussions on this topic. Voicing opinions no matter the view is important. So even if you and/ or I don't agree with one another, I do truly enjoy an open discourse.
I created this topic when I first started playing Path of Exile, so now with more time in the title I feel it's necessary to adjust my previous opinion. When I first started playing (this past month) I quickly noticed that players could trade with one another, and most non-league specific items were not bound to characters, so I initially thought trade was designed from a developer standpoint, but now I'm leaning to it being community driven. It could be true that the developers meant to have casual trade among the user's, but at some point the players demanded more and the trade website was introduced. Originally when I started and got to the map section I really wanted an auction house where you could just list items and collect money. Now though, I would like to have more of a storefront to where I was able to sell things just like it is now, but the handling of items isn't done by me, but the game. The process of getting the current and/ or trading the items removes my engagement with the game. At its core I look at Path of Exile like a dungeon crawler, with some aspects of trading. I also think that trading itself only became so popular with the help of third-party programs and if someone removed those, the economy takes a hit. With any title based around a capitalist society, the player base will tend to follow. Meaning the players will most likely play the same way they get paid at work, in some form of currency. I brought that last one up because I've heard players disagree with my opinion that this game wasn't centered around trading and/ or economy, and an auction house would cause user inflation. Basically people cornered the market. Technically it's possible, but that also means that should be happening right now. I can't count the number of times I've seen listings for items at 1 chaos, to collect value from new players. So to be clear, I would like the Path of Exile team to look into these features. Premium stash tab used more like a storefront, that allows the use of simi-automation to collect payments. The stash tab itself holds the currency and/ or dropped into a collection jar of sorts that only holds so much (so you can't go afk for too long). POE official trade accessible from ingame An ingame character builder. I want to be able to trade, search and/ or create a build ingame without the need for third-party programs. |

Well said, I'm glad you can see that while an AH is probably the most efficient method, it isnt interesting, and the increased efficiency would require that drop rates were adjusted to balance the availability of items, meaning that the AH would become even more mandatory. Having awkward trade means that you can have an abundance of items, and (mostly) self found playstyles that in my experience a lot of players prefer, even in trade league.
From what I have seen throughout the life of the game, is that GGG are well aware of the problem, and have spent a lot of time talking about alternatives, but they want an elegant solution if they are going to commit to it. I just really hope they find it, because the game has completely outgrown the current system. |
|
" It was actually the other way around... GGG allowed you to link to your items from the forum. People put their items up for sale on the forum, and some enterprising enthusiasts created scrapers and had a website that pretty much worked as the current trade website. The history of trade is written pretty well here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2025870 " Unfortunately, you wouldn't collect any money as you'd likely not find anything worth anything. PoE drops so MUCH loot that any automated auction house would be swamped with items. The current trade website doesn't because there is a time-spent cost to putting things up for sale, so most players doesn't. Automated trading would lead to a wast number of items being put up for sale, meaning that the chance of you finding something that would earn you money is remote. |
|
" I wasn't aware of that, I guess I was wrong. Thanks for linking that history of trade, but I'm not going to read it. History listens for video games are nonsensical and I view them as a complete waste of time. Understand I don't mean to sound mean in any way. For the next part, I'm very sure I'll find stuff of value to post on an auction house, as I've already been selling stuff regularly in game. I put 6 divine into my SRS poison build, plus have 10 extra divine just in hard currency. I might be new to Path of Exile, but not to gaming. I run the model KISS (keep it simple stupid) no matter what I'm doing, as to lower the amount of time it takes to do things. I don't pick up items worth less than 5c (currently) and that will grow to 10c at some point. Also if it was confusing, I'm not asking for an automated auction house. More or less I want the same system that the console has access to called the trade board. Consoles have access to that system, plus the ability to search for items from a web-browser. It's a win-win in my book. I also play this game with a controller and/ or a mouse & keyboard. It's quite amazing how they incorporated such good settings for controller users. The developers really thought the process out. |

what about making the auction house an MTX
Meaning, its like buying a premium stash tab, but significantly more expensive>? That way GGG would make money and at the same time make players who want the AH satisfied. The players that want to continue trading the normal way can still do that also. Just a thought. |

Haven't been playing for a while, returning for 2.0.
My biggest issues with trade are afk and fake prices. It is always a vomiting chore for me to buy gear for a new character and usually takes a whole evening. What I suggest: keep premium tabs as is, add trade elemental/robot/your_skin_here that does everything what those trade macros does: writes you PM message, opens trade widow, puts items in there, accepts trade and wishes you fare well. And add AH window in game where if you press "buy item", it is reserved for you for 5 minutes and you are guaranteed to buy it if you visit sellers hideout. This will: 1) Fix unfair advantage of trade bot users. 2) Fix enormous price scam issue. 3) Give AH functionality that I desire - you can buy what you see in items list instead of hoping it is a real seller and he is there. 4) Keep all those sweet hideouts for display when someone visits you. 5) Add new item that can be sold for real money and have dozens of new skins. |

"^ Clearly I hadn’t read that for a while. Thanks, I enjoyed laughing at GGG’s suggestion that nothing in singleplayer games can possibly matter:
For items to matter, it's important that they can be traded to other players." Ha! I'd never read that post before, but also find it hilarious (it also explains a helluva lot). I'm one of those players that found the game rather dull with trade (find a stupid combo, buy the parts, watch everything explode with little to no more 'playing' involved), so moved to SSF (I'm willing to cop the hit to character potentials to make it feel like a game). It is a shame things'll never be balanced for SSF (don't get me wrong, I do get why they won't), but for my two cents, a POE game balanced around no trade would still be the perfect game :) |

+1, obviously.
Remove all of the fun taxation in general. Make it smooth and painless. |
